Someone with BDD will be preoccupied with nonexistent or slight defects in their physical appearance, which causes significant emotional distress or significantly interferes with their daily functioning. While the cause of the disorder is not entirely clear, BDD is about 50% heritable, and it can strike men as well as women.

Now, a Missouri proposal currently under consideration would allow lawmakers to restrict abortions after a fetus is considered viable, except if an abortion "is needed to protect the life or physical or mental health of the pregnant person." Similarly, a measure in Arizona has explicitly included a mental exception.
