Sep 20th 2024, 07:57
Lewis Hine’s photograph of Addie Card, taken in August 1910, has become an iconic image of child labor. Hine learned that Addie started working at the North Pownal, Vermont, cotton mill when she was 8 and left school at the age of 12 to work there full-time.

Sep 20th 2024, 07:44
A new study has found that more than half of Black and Hispanic infants were born into very low-opportunity neighborhoods, and that babies born into these neighborhoods had a 16-percent greater risk of being born preterm. The study sheds new light on the health consequences of structural racism and historically discriminatory practices — such as redlining and disproportionate exposures to pollutants — that continue to shape modern-day neighborhood conditions and circumstances.

Sep 20th 2024, 07:23
Abstract
Repetitive negative thinking and intolerance of uncertainty are risk and maintenance factors for emotional disorders. Although emerging evidence suggests that intolerance of uncertainty predicts increases in distress through repetitive negative thinking, these relationships have yet to be investigated among veterans. The present study examines if repetitive negative thinking mediates the relationships of intolerance of uncertainty with stress, disordered symptoms and impairment among a mixed clinical sample of veterans. Two hundred and forty-four treatment-seeking veterans with diagnoses of major depressive disorder, panic disorder, or posttraumatic stress disorder completed measures of intolerance of uncertainty, repetitive negative thinking, stress, impairment, depression, panic, and posttraumatic stress prior to receiving treatment. Mediation models revealed indirect effects of intolerance of uncertainty through repetitive negative thinking on stress and impairment in the full sample, and on disordered symptoms in subsamples with major depressive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. Conversely, intolerance of uncertainty did not have direct or indirect effects on disordered symptoms in a panic disorder subsample. Findings suggest that repetitive negative thinking and intolerance of uncertainty uniquely contribute to stress, impairment, and disordered symptoms, but repetitive negative thinking, may, in part, drive intolerance of uncertainty’s contribution to emotional disorders. Interventions for repetitive negative thinking might improve the efficacy of existing transdiagnostic treatment protocols. Cross-sectional data is a limitation of the present study. Prospective designs in civilian samples can better establish the temporality of these relationships and if they are generalizable to the larger population.

Sep 20th 2024, 06:36
Abstract
The youth self-report version of the Child and Adolescent Dispositions Scale (CADS) measures three orthogonal temperament dimensions that are hypothesized to dispose children and adolescents to develop psychological problems through transactions with the environment. The CADS was developed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) of ratings of a pool of items from which synonyms and antonyms of DSM symptoms were excluded in two population-based samples. The criterion validity of the resulting three CADS dimensions of negative emotionality, prosociality, and daring has been well established in multiple samples. We examined the factor structure and criterion validity correlations of the CADS using data on 14.0–18.0 year olds in the English community based Neuroscience in Psychiatry 2400 Study. Using CFA, the three hypothesized CADS factors were identified, which were validated by their predicted cross-cutting correlations with measures of anxiety, depression, and conduct problems. Nonetheless, the fit of the CFA was not acceptable, likely because the expectation of simple structure in CFA was not met. The same data were re-analyzed using exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) to identify sources of poor fit. Two of the three fit indices suggested acceptable fit for the three-factor ESEM solution (Standardized Root Mean-Square Residual = 0.047; Root Mean-Square Error of Approximation = 0.067; Comparative Fit Index = 0.878). If replicated in other samples, these results suggest that some prosociality items with cross-loadings on more than one factor should be considered for elimination or replacement to improve the measurement of these dispositional dimensions.

Sep 20th 2024, 06:03
Abstract
The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 resulted in a massive exodus of Ukrainians to Europe but also the emigration of Russian citizens. While attention has primarily been on the flow of Russian migrants to neighbouring countries, intercontinental migrations to regions like South America have been overlooked. This paper sheds light on the growing trend of Russians settling in Brazil. Drawing on a comprehensive dataset of migration statistics and qualitative data from empirical fieldwork conducted between 2019 and 2023 in three Brazilian cities, our analysis reveals that new Russian migrants to Brazil are primarily young, highly skilled and resourceful individuals. Unlike in other regions, family migration with young children is common among recent Russian migrants to Brazil. We show that strategic births – using the birth of children to gain residency and citizenship -has become the primary migration channel, forming a new migration system characterised by intensive circulation and turnover between Russia and Brazil. Moreover, while Russian emigration is driven by political reasons, the incorporation of migrants into Brazilian cities is influenced by the relatively privileged economic and legal status of these families. The paper contributes to a deeper understanding of complex migration patterns in the “Global South” by illuminating a geographically unconventional flow.

Sep 20th 2024, 05:23
Sexualities, Ahead of Print. Drawing on interviews with 17 K-pop fans from Australia and the Philippines who identity as LGBTQ+, this article explores and theorizes the role of K-pop fandom in the production of knowledge concerning gender and sexuality. Through an analytical approach sensitive to the affective discourse produced by fans, this article establishes that K-pop fandom operates as a queer space which normalizes queer sexuality and gendered performance through the production of feelings of security, attraction, and relief. Further, analysis of the LGBTQ + fans’ discourse uncovers that the androgynous gendered performances of K-pop idols facilitate fans’ queering of heteropatriarchal and heteronormative ideologies.

Without trust, societies fall victim to fragmentation, which favours populism and undermines social stability amid geopolitical confrontation.

Sep 20th 2024, 00:44
Hostility towards women is a type of prejudice that can have adverse effects on women and society, but research on predictors of men’s hostility towards women is limited. The present study primarily introduced predictors associated with misogynist involuntary celibates (incels), and then investigated whether loneliness, rejection, attractiveness, number of romantic and sexual partners, right-wing authoritarianism, and gaming predicted hostility towards women among a more general sample of men. A total of 473 men (aged 18–35, single, heterosexual, UK residents) recruited via Prolific answered the hostile sexism subscale, the misogyny scale, the self-perceived sexual attractiveness scale, the right-wing authoritarianism scale, the game addiction scale for adolescents, the adult rejection-sensitivity scale, the UCLA loneliness scale, and self-developed questions regarding number of sexual and romantic partners, and time spent gaming. We found a strong positive relationship between right-wing authoritarianism and hostility towards women, as well as a strong convex curvilinear relationship between attractiveness and hostility towards women. The number of sexual partners showed a moderate concave relationship with hostility towards women. We did not find sufficient support for a relationship between gaming and hostility towards women, and there was no support that loneliness, rejection, or romantic partners predicted hostility towards women among a general sample of men. Our study supports right-wing authoritarianism and self-perceived attractiveness as potential strong predictors in understanding men’s hostility towards women in the wider community.

Sep 20th 2024, 00:11
Abstract
Individuals from different social groups form divergent legal punishment decisions about police officers engaged in altercations with civilians despite viewing the same visual evidence. We review empirical and archival data in the legal domain to offer four vision-based moderators of polarized legal judgments determined after viewing evidence with a focus on research relevant to police-civilian altercations. We discuss how selective visual attention, flittering and staring tendencies, differences in cognitive engagement, and visual confirmation bias contribute to divergent legal decisions within and across social groups. By incorporating visual experience into models of legal decision-making, we reconcile inconsistencies regarding the impact of social group identity on bias in police punishment.

Sep 19th 2024, 23:54
Background. One of the most common symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS) is depression, which causes disruption to daily participation. MS as a degenerative disease causes caregiver strain. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of depression on the occupational performance of people with MS and to study whether these aspects influence caregiver strain. Materials and Methods. A descriptive cross-sectional observational study was carried out. A total of 124 people with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis were assessed and administered the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale. Results. MS type influences performance, involvement, and caregiver burden. High levels of depression are associated with low levels of participation and performance. The types of MS with the highest caregiver burden are relapsing–remitting and secondary progressive. Conclusions. The type of MS negatively influences occupational performance. Depression and occupational performance are related to caregiver strain. The greater the depressive symptoms, the worse the performance, and the more caregiver strain.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/psyg-13176/) The mediating role of nutritional indicators in the association between estimated glomerular filtration rate and cognitive impairment in older adults
Sep 19th 2024, 23:23
Abstract
Background
Cognitive impairment (CI) is common in older adults, especially those with renal dysfunction. We aimed to investigate the complex relationships among renal function, nutritional status, and CI in older people free from late chronic kidney disease (CKD) and severe CI.
Methods
A study of older people (≥60 years old) with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of >30 mL/min/1.73 m2 and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores of >10 (n = 237) was conducted at Beijing Tongren Hospital. Their eGFR was determined using the CKD-EPI-cr-Cysc equation. Cognitive function was evaluated with the MoCA. We tested the relationship between eGFR and MoCA scores using Spearman correlation analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. We then conducted a mediation analysis to figure out the mediating roles of nutritional indicators (Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) scores, albumin (ALB), and haemoglobin (HGB)) between the eGFR and MoCA scores.
Results
The incidence of CI was 48.5% (115/237) in older people. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the better the kidney function, the better the cognitive function (R = 0.297, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that eGFR decrease per 15 mL/min/1.73 m2 (OR: 1.415, 95% confidence interval: 1.055–1.896, P = 0.020) was related to CI after adjusting for age and sex. However, the eGFR was not associated with cognitive decline after adjusting for nutritional indicators, behavioural risk factors, other biomarkers, and chronic conditions, suggesting that eGFR is not independently associated with CI. Mediation analysis revealed that the MNA-SF scores (a*b = 0.006 (0.0002–0.012)) and HGB (a*b = 0.008 (0.001–0.017)) were mediating factors between the eGFR and MoCA scores.
Conclusions
A decline in renal function can directly lead to CI and can also exacerbate cognitive deficits through intermediary factors such as MNA-SF scores and HGB. Therefore, correcting anaemia and improving nutritional status are significantly important for enhancing cognitive function in older patients, especially those with renal dysfunction.

Journal of Early Intervention, (https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/jeib/46/3) Volume 46, Issue 3, Page 323-337, September 2024. Mindfulness strategies can have a large impact on emotional regulation, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal relationships. Parents of children on the autism spectrum may experience greater stress, depression, and strained interpersonal relationships than those with typically developing children or those with children experiencing other developmental delays. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and initial effects of a virtual Mindful Self-Compassion workshop for parents of children on the autism spectrum and the impact on stress, self-compassion, parenting self-efficacy, and mindfulness. This pilot study used a mixed-method approach to test this hypothesis. Participants completed surveys before and after the brief workshop and participated in a 1-hr focus group within 1 week of completing the surveys. The findings indicate that a short, 3-day virtual workshop may be effective toward improving parents’ mindfulness and self-compassion. Parents reported feeling more mindful in their day-to-day life, more self-compassionate during difficult times, and more patient with themselves and other people in their family. A brief, virtual workshop may be effective for short-term improvements in outcomes for parents of children on the autism spectrum.

Sep 19th 2024, 21:39
Ursula K. Le Guin (1929–2018) was an influential American writer who was a leading literary figure of the 20th century. She is known for her contributions to the science fiction and fantasy genres. She wrote numerous novels, short stories, poems, and essays throughout her career, exploring various themes and pushing the boundaries of speculative fiction. In this article, I discuss Le Guin’s writings on the developmental tasks of adolescence. In Le Guin’s fiction, she examines how different social and cultural contexts determine patterns of maturation and the acquisition of the roles and responsibilities of adulthood. This article focuses on two novels, A Wizard of Earthsea from the Books of Earthsea (Le Guin, 2018), and Coming of Age in Karhide (Le Guin, 2017).

Sep 19th 2024, 20:39
Sociological Methodology, (https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/smxa/54/2) Volume 54, Issue 2, Page 193-216, August 2024. The authors argue that hitherto separate methodological conversations about abduction and comparison can be fruitfully brought together to generate novel, well-founded insights and retheorize an object of study in multiple-case qualitative inquiry. The authors call this abductive cross-case comparison and illustrate it by way of a collective study of how professional boundary work is changing under transnational conditions. In this study, the authors faced a common challenge in qualitative-comparative research: what to do when initial observations generate “surprises” that seem to confound the theoretical frameworks undergirding the comparison? To discuss how abductive inferences supported the authors’ response to this challenge, they explicate the acts of discovery and (re)conceptualization involved through various steps in a team-based research process. Building on the existing qualitative comparison literature, the authors suggest that such procedures fill a methodological gap and may hold great promise for overcoming obstacles in designing and implementing comparative research. Overall, the authors explicate and illustrate the method of abductive cross-case comparison, including their work as a research team. The aim of this article is thus to help sociologists implement better qualitative research that leverages a fuller potential of comparative designs to push beyond established knowledge and frameworks.
