(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/open-access-journal-articles/s12888-024-05785-1/) Extreme behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia: a case study
May 19th 2024, 15:22

Abstract

Background
The seven tiered behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) model of service delivery has been used by inpatient units. The classification of each tier is broadly defined and not always agreed upon by clinicians. The case study uses novel approach by combining the BPSD classification criteria with clinical presentation to identify the clinical characteristics of the case and match these characteristics against the BPSD classification. This process was enhanced by using case specific measures such as the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and Cohen Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) scales and key clinical data.

Case Presentation
A case study of 76 year old male diagnosed with mixed Alzheimer’s and Vascular dementia. The clinical presentation of the symptomatology was deemed to be extreme, thus fitting into the seventh tier (Extreme) of the BPSD model of service delivery. The case is considered to fit into the Extreme BPSD category given the high levels of aggression, which were consistently reflected in high scores on NPI and CMAI, as well as long length of inpatient stay (over 3 years). The average number of Pro re nata (PRN) psychotropics medications per month was 56 and seclusion episodes of 6 times per month, with each episode lasting on average 132 min shows severity of behaviours. His level of aggression had resulted in environmental damage and staff injuries.

Conclusion
We recommend patient clinical characteristics, relevant hospital data and specific measures should be used to develop consensus around defining and classifying cases into Extreme BPSD.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/cdp0000462/) Sowing the seeds: Sociocultural resistance in the psychological sciences.
May 19th 2024, 15:01

Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Vol 30(2), Apr 2024, 214-223; doi:10.1037/cdp0000462
Objective: This article problematizes the use of resilience as a psychological and developmental indication of well-being. We base our argument on the possibility that resilience theories internalize responsibility for survival within the individual, and that survival is dependent on the ability to assimilate to injustice. Resistance, on the other hand, represents acts of intentional, active, and often collective survival which can expose and oppose social injustice. Method: Bringing together transdisciplinary scholarship on resistance, we propose a conceptual framework of sociocultural resistance. This framework seeks to forward studies of health that acknowledge the complexity of relationships, culture, and power constitutive of the human condition. Results: We provide examples of sociocultural resistance in the psychological and developmental sciences and suggest the use of diverse theory and methods in the study of resistance. Conclusions: Resistance research is a timely, necessary, and critical turning point in the social sciences with the potential to change unjust systems and promote a nuanced view of health. May 19th 2024, 13:32

Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, Vol 34(1), Mar 2024, 27-44; doi:10.1037/int0000310
Social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic forced many therapists to shift from in-person sessions to the use of communication technology. This shift actualizes the issue of for whom and when remote therapy is suitable and how the therapeutic technique should be adjusted. Our study explored therapists’ long-term experiences of remote psychotherapy after this transition. Data were collected about 2 years after World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Semistructured interviews with 10 therapists with different treatment orientations were analyzed, applying the qualitative method of inductive experiential thematic analysis. The therapists said that the use of communication technology implied a new and different in-session interaction, inclusive of changed relational dynamics and the need to adjust their way of working. All therapists experienced possibilities and advantages as well as difficulties and challenges with remote psychotherapy. As time went on, they gained both positive and negative new experiences of the distinctive features of remote therapy and became more comfortable with remote communication. Above all, they acquired new technical and relational skills. Taken together, the therapists’ experiences illustrate the need to develop new skills for negotiating setting alternations and distance regulation and to adapt therapeutic interventions when shifting between in-person settings and remote sessions. May 19th 2024, 12:01

Journal of Rural Mental Health, Vol 48(2), Apr 2024, 97-108; doi:10.1037/rmh0000246
Children and youth in remote regions can struggle to receive appropriate mental health care. Many researchers have also highlighted the challenges encountered by autistic youth and their caregivers when seeking services in rural communities, but little is known specifically regarding autistic clients with co-occurring mental health needs. To better understand potential barriers to care in remote regions, publicly funded mental health providers (N = 611) completed an online survey. We compared providers from remote, accessible, and easily accessible regions of Ontario on their knowledge, confidence, and experiences when treating autistic clients with mental health needs. Overall, providers from remote regions were more likely to report barriers to care, particularly in terms of the availability of services, compared to clinicians from more accessible regions. These results highlight the need for additional resources in remote regions and have implications for policies and programs aimed at recruiting specialized health providers to these communities. May 19th 2024, 10:32

Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Vol 30(2), Apr 2024, 234-246; doi:10.1037/cdp0000658
Objectives: This study examined the indirect relationship between immigration-related stressors and depressive symptoms via family conflict and whether familism values moderated this relationship in a sample of U.S. Latine youth. We also explored nativity and gender differences in the predictive model. Method: Participants were 306 Midwestern Latine youth (Mage = 15.50, 46.2% girls, 79.9% Mexican origin) and their primary caregivers who completed measures of study constructs. A series of path models examined the potential mediating role of family conflict and the moderating effects of familism values, gender, and nativity. Results: For the overall sample, parental exposure to immigration-related stressors was related to higher youth depressive symptoms through higher levels of family conflict. However, multigroup models revealed significant differences by nativity and gender. The indirect effect through family conflict was only significant for non-U.S.-born youth with low to average levels of familism-support and average to high levels of familism-obligation; it was not significant for U.S.-born youth. Furthermore, the indirect association was only significant for boys with average to high levels of familism-obligation; no significant indirect effects were found for girls. Conclusions: The results indicate that the indirect pathway linking immigration-related stressors to depressive symptoms via family conflict depends on youth familism values, nativity status, and gender. Findings highlight the distinct effects of familism-support and obligation and the need to consider sociodemographic diversity within Latine communities. May 19th 2024, 10:02

Decision, Vol 11(2), Apr 2024, 283-302; doi:10.1037/dec0000218
Researchers can measure preference using different elicitation tasks. In this article, I propose that the decision how to measure preference is particularly consequential because preference elicitation tasks differ in terms of two properties: (a) their sensitivity to the relative utility of the options and (b) the amount of noise in participants’ responses. I focus on two elicitation tasks: choice and ratings. Through simulations and a series of experiments, I provide robust evidence that a greater percentage of participants prefer “advantaged” options (i.e., options carrying a higher amount of utility) in choice than in rating. This typically occurs because choice is more sensitive to utility differences than ratings and because ratings are sometimes associated with higher levels of noise than choice. Further, I discuss four moderators of the effect: the granularity of the rating scale, the type of judgment elicited by the rating task, the magnitude of the utility difference between the options, and the mode by which alternatives are presented (joint vs. separate). (https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/int0000304/) Brief transactional analysis psychotherapy for depression: The systematic development of a treatment manual.
May 19th 2024, 09:01

Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, Vol 34(1), Mar 2024, 1-26; doi:10.1037/int0000304
Since the birth of transactional analysis (TA) in the 1950s, many psychotherapists have provided and tested TA psychotherapy (TAP) in clinical trials. However, most descriptions of TA therapy within these trials offered a general guide rather than a systematic treatment manual. This makes it difficult to attribute their outcomes directly to TAP as the variations in the therapists’ ways of working have not been sufficiently accounted for. The existing manuals are based on particular schools of TA and research-informed personal best practice, rather than systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which would ensure that they could be replicated. This article addresses that apparent gap by describing the systematic development of a semistructured treatment manual for Brief Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy for depression, in order to enable its use in practice and research. The manual was based on an international survey of TA therapists, a systematic literature review of TA psychometric instruments, and meta-analyses of TAP clinical trials, which fed into the development of the evidence-based integrated conceptual model. This model formed an operational definition of TAP and the basis of a 16-session treatment manual for mild to moderate depression. The manual consists of four stages: initial assessment and therapeutic agreement (“contract”), systematic assessment, experiential processing, decision-making and applying script changes. Two new instruments were also developed: Transactional Analysis Goal Attainment Form (TAGAF) and Transactional Analysis Psychotherapeutic Self Report Competencies Scale (TAP-SRCS). May 19th 2024, 08:03

Abstract
Understanding the levels of power that adolescent girls and young women exercise in their sexual and reproductive lives is imperative to inform interventions to help them meet their goals. We implemented an adapted version of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Empowerment (SRE) Scale for Adolescents and Young Adults among 500 adolescent girls and young women aged 15–20 in Kisumu, Kenya. We used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess factor structure, and logistic regression to examine construct validity through the relationship between empowerment scores and ability to mitigate risk of undesired pregnancy through consistent contraceptive use. Participants had a mean age of 17.5, and most were students (61 percent), were currently partnered (94 percent), and reported having sex in the past 3 months (70 percent). The final, 26-item CFA model had acceptable fit. All subscales had Cronbach’s alpha scores >0.7, and all items had rotated factor loadings >0.5, indicating good internal consistency and robust factor-variable associations. The total SRE-Kenya (SRE-K) score was associated with increased odds of the consistent method used in the past three months (adjusted odds ratio: 1.98, 95 percent CI: 1.29–3.10). The SRE-K scale is a newly adapted and valid measure of sexual and reproductive empowerment specific to adolescent girls and young women in an East African setting.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/dec0000219/) Discounting future reward in an uncertain world.
May 19th 2024, 07:02

Decision, Vol 11(2), Apr 2024, 255-282; doi:10.1037/dec0000219
Humans discount delayed relative to more immediate reward. A plausible explanation is that impatience arises partly from uncertainty, or risk, implicit in delayed reward. Existing theories of discounting-as-risk focus on a probability that delayed reward will not materialize. By contrast, we examine how uncertainty in the magnitude of delayed reward contributes to delay discounting. We propose a model wherein reward is discounted proportional to the rate of random change in its magnitude across time, termed volatility. We find evidence to support this model across three experiments (total N = 158). First, using a task where participants chose when to sell products, whose price dynamics they previously learned, we show discounting increases in line with price volatility. Second, we show that this effect pertains over naturalistic delays of up to 4 months. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we observe a volatility-dependent decrease in functional hippocampal–prefrontal coupling during intertemporal choice. Third, we replicate these effects in a larger online sample, finding that volatility discounting within each task correlates with baseline discounting outside of the task. We conclude that delay discounting partly reflects time-dependent uncertainty about reward magnitude, that is volatility. Our model captures how discounting adapts to volatility, thereby partly accounting for individual differences in impatience. Our imaging findings suggest a putative mechanism whereby uncertainty reduces prospective simulation of future outcomes. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/pop4-391/) The role of microfinance in improving living standards: Evidence from Tunisia
May 19th 2024, 05:21

Abstract
The main objective of this article is to investigate the effects of microfinance on poverty alleviation and improving living standards of poor households in Tunisia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that analyzes such topics in the Tunisian context. We employed Logistic regressions (both binomial and ordered logit) and Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to examine the consequences of microfinance usage. Based on complexity theory, fsQCA contributes to the literature by generating a richer understanding of complex poverty phenomena. Overall, we find a positive and significant relationship between the amount of microcredit an individual receives and the improvement of the living standards of beneficiaries. The improvements mainly relate to increased income, improved health care, and more consistent attendance at school. This study shows the potential for microfinance to reduce poverty in Tunisia, especially in the period following the Arab spring.
May 19th 2024, 04:37

School Psychology International, Ahead of Print. School psychologists can support schools in implementing inclusive practices. In Portugal, the Decree-Law 54/2018 has set the country on the path to inclusive education based on whole-school approaches. This policy shift demands a change in school psychologists’ practices to be agents for systems change versus traditional roles (such as assessing and counseling students). An e-learning training course was developed and implemented by nine psychologists through a partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Portuguese Psychology Association, focused on the Multi-tiered Systems of Support framework for constructing inclusive schools. The main aim was to empower school psychologists to support adequate, inclusive, and multi-tiered intervention responses in their schools, resourcing a collaborative and supervised approach. From all Portuguese regions, 327 psychologists participated in the training from October 2020 to April 2021. This article focuses on the trainers’ experiences of training, collected through a focus group, reflecting on the challenges, opportunities, and necessary improvements for future training in school psychologists in Portugal on this topic. Trainers have identified organizational and pedagogical aspects as critical to the training delivery and quality that should be addressed in future training courses for school psychologists.

May 19th 2024, 04:24

Abstract
Public administration in the recent years has become a very dynamic and vast domain owing to evolving challenges. Our study aims to comparatively evaluate the changing discourse in public administration research in general and ‘Public Administration and Development’ (PAD) in particular. For this purpose, we have taken research articles from nine journals of public administration domain for the period of 2010–2022. We have used the text-mining based approach of Dynamic Topic Modelling to understand the evolution of topics in public administration research. This is followed by the Named Entity Recognition (NER) to discover the geographic importance given in public administration research vis-à-vis PAD. We have used the measure of ‘Jaccard similarity’ to compare the changing discourse of PAD with respect to other journals. We have found that topics on approaches to governance, organization performance and health were always on the priority in literature. We have also found that topic coverage in PAD is more diverse and niche compared to the overall trends in public administration research. NER findings suggest that public administration research is more Euro-North American centric while PAD has pan-continental presence with focus on developing countries.
