Sep 6th 2023, 11:43

Abstract
Therapeutic photography is the practice of using photography in order to explore issues and reach defined outcomes with people who use services. It has been deemed to be an accessible tool which can have a positive impact on self-esteem, self-efficacy and empowerment. Using interpretive phenomenological analysis, this research analyses observations and focus group feedback from a group of participants receiving support from a third-sector organisation for mental health issues. Specifically, the data were analysed to look at how a therapeutic photography programme contributed to group dynamics, exploration and outcomes. Three inter-related super-ordinate themes were identified, these being (1) exposing the self; (2) searching; and (3) developing the self. These themes centred around the identity of the participants as they explored their photographs and associated narratives. The results suggest that the medium of photography contributes to enhanced self-disclosure and social bonding through the familiarity of engaging with photographs. The photographs also enable participants to feel in control of the information shared, facilitating the level of exploration and personal learning around identity and roles and could be beneficial in social work with groups where these outcomes are sought.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/meta-analyses-systematic-reviews/pere-12511/) The effects of sexual and gender minority stress on relationship functioning: A meta‐analysis
Sep 6th 2023, 10:44

Abstract
Theory and research indicate that experiences of sexual and gender minority (SGM) stress among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, plus (LGBTQ+) individuals are related to a variety of negative health outcomes. Because positive romantic relationships promote better physical and mental health outcomes, understanding factors that contribute positively or negatively to relationship functioning is necessary to improve relationships and promote physical and mental health. As such, the primary goals of the present study were to conduct a meta-analysis on the association between SGM stress and (1) relationship functioning and (2) substance use, a well-established predictor of relationship functioning. We used multivariate meta-analysis with robust variance estimation to summarize the effects. Across 304 effects from 73 studies, we found a significant negative association between SGM stress and relationship functioning, r = −.13, 95% CI [−0.16, −0.10]. We also found significant positive associations between SGM stress and alcohol use r = .08, 95% CI [0.06, 0.11], and drug use r = .09, 95% CI [0.05, 0.13]. These small, but significant, relations are interpreted to indicate that SGM stress could erode relationship functioning and, in turn, weaken its potential protective effects against negative health outcomes, although longitudinal studies are needed.

It has become commonplace to suggest that Europe faces a rolling, accumulating and interconnected ‘polycrisis’: the climate and biodiversity catastrophe, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the ravages of inflation and the growing human flow desperately seeking a haven within the continent—not forgetting the possibility of new waves of global pandemic. These books variously offer explanations and prescriptions—which also turn out to be interlinked—for aspects of Europe’s ‘polycrisis’ and how to surmount it. Sep 6th 2023, 03:36

Abstract
Apathy is linked to mental health and altered neurocognitive functions such as learning and decision-making in healthy adults. Mental health problems typically begin to emerge during adolescence, yet little is known about how apathy develops due to an absence of quantitative measurements specific to young people. Here, we present and evaluate the Apathy Motivation Index–Child Version (AMI-CV) for children and adolescents. We show across two samples of young people (aged 8 to 17 years, total N = 191) tested in schools in the UK and on a smartphone app, that the AMI-CV is a short, psychometrically sound measure to assess levels of apathy and motivation in young people. Similar to adult versions, the AMI-CV captures three distinct apathy domains: Behavioural Activation, Social Motivation and Emotional Sensitivity. The AMI-CV showed excellent construct validity with an alternative measure of apathy and external validity replicating specific links with related mental health traits shown in adults. Our results provide a short measure of self-reported apathy in young people that enables research into apathy development. The AMI-CV can be used in conjunction with the adult version to investigate the impact of levels of apathy across the lifespan.

Sep 6th 2023, 02:31

Abstract
Recently, Davey et al. (2023) outlined several recommendations for future care, policy and research for patients with eating disorders which is primarily focused on the UK health care system. Our commentary aims at contributing several aspects from other European countries and emphasises the need for stronger European collaboration, joint initiatives and a strategic plan to foster clinical and research concepts in the eating disorder field, especially in a time of multiple (global) crises and restricted resources.

Sep 6th 2023, 02:26

Abstract
Growing empirical evidence supports the positive contribution of cross-group friendship to intergroup attitudes, as well as to individuals’ personal development. However, developing cross-group friendships may be challenging depending on individuals’ respective group identities; namely, their ethnicity, gender, race, and sexual orientation identities. This paper considers how psychological factors related to these group identities contribute to cross-group friendship. Research on individuals’ experiences of cross-group interactions across different contexts (first encounters; interacting with friends) has found that these interactions can be challenging. Most explanations of these challenges have focused either directly or indirectly on issues related to prejudice. It is suggested here that another important but neglected perspective for understanding intergroup friendship concerns individuals’ awareness and responsiveness to differences in privileges and opportunities associated with their own and their friend’s group-related identities. The implications are discussed in the context of friendship values and relationship qualities in intergroup friendship.

Sep 5th 2023, 23:53

Youth &Society, Ahead of Print. Stress among adolescents is a growing concern due to its adverse effects on health and social functioning, especially in China. Awe is related to relief of daily stress and reduction of stress-related symptoms. However, existing research related to perceived stress in Chinese adolescents has not considered awe; moreover, the possible influence of perceived stress on the tendency to feel awe is poorly understood. This study used two-wave cross-lagged analysis to explore the relationship between awe and perceived stress among Chinese adolescents. Three hundred and fifty Chinese middle school students aged 13 to 16 completed the Dispositional Awe Scale and Perceived Stress Scale questionnaires twice, with 3 months between responses. Results show that awe predicts lower levels of perceived stress over time, and perceived stress predicts lower levels of awe, supporting the idea of a reciprocal relationship between the two. This suggests potential practical interventions for stress management in Chinese adolescents.

Sep 5th 2023, 23:52

This report concludes Oxfam’s research project on Factors Influencing Misconduct Reporting, which began in 2019–20 by identifying specific barriers in Myanmar, Iraq and Ghana. To test the integration of recommendations from this research, Oxfam then conducted two pilot projects in Iraq and Ghana from May 2021 to September 2022.
Oxfam in Iraq focused on survivors’ perceptions of justice, combating survivor shaming and working with partners to develop reporting mechanisms.
Oxfam in Ghana also worked with partners to conduct a national campaign against gender-based violence, which included a reporting hotline and work to strengthen community awareness.
Lessons learned included the need for integrated programming and flexible funding, the importance of a feminist approach to monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning, putting survivors at the centre of programming and building decolonial partnerships to ensure that survivors are able to report misconduct.

Sep 5th 2023, 23:49

Abstract
As is the case in many countries, university reform is a perennial topic of discussion in Japan and there is an extensive domestic literature on this topic, ranging in character from tabloid to scholarly. The purpose of this essay is to introduce some of the themes currently preoccupying Japanese authors at the more scholarly end of this spectrum. The essay reviews texts dealing with the fundamental nature of ‘Japanese’ universities, how they are managed, and their relationship with government, all with a view to identifying ways out of the gridlock of intractable problems and unworkable solutions which, as the essay explains, afflicts much of the existing literature. The essay highlights especially contributions which lack direct parallels in the international Anglophone literature on university reform, encouraging readers to explore further for themselves and initiate greater dialogue between vernacular and ‘global’ scholarly traditions.
