Oct 24th 2023, 14:44

Abstract
We study how Americans respond to idiosyncratic and exogenous changes in household wealth and unearned income. Our analyses combine administrative data on U.S. lottery winners with an event study design. We first examine individual and household earnings responses to these windfall gains, finding significant and sizable wealth and income effects. On average, an extra dollar of unearned income in a given period reduces household labor earnings by about 50 cents, decreases total labor taxes by 10 cents, and increases consumption expenditure by 60 cents. These effects are heterogeneous across the income distribution, with households in higher quartiles of the income distribution reducing their earnings by a larger amount. Next, we examine margins of adjustment other than earnings and, in the course of doing so, address a number of important economic questions about how additional wealth or unearned income affect retirement decisions and labor market dynamics, family formation and dissolution, entrepreneurship and self-employment, and geographic mobility and neighborhood choice. Lastly, we carefully compare our findings to those reported in existing lottery studies. This comparison reveals that existing U.S. studies substantially underestimate wealth and income effects because they use measures that understate the earnings responses and overstate the after-tax wealth changes associated with lottery wins.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/7325421/) Is geropsychology ‘forever young’ on the Mother Continent? Addressing the limited research on psychology of aging in Africa
Oct 24th 2023, 14:42

Abstract
Objectives
Our paper highlights areas of interest to psychologists studying aging in Africa and what has already been learned about aspects of psychological aging from studies done in the African context. We also considered whether there are issues that are unique about aging in the African context that might challenge how aging is typically considered in psychology research.
Method
We reviewed articles recently published in major gerontology journals focusing on African older adults, with the goal of identifying key themes of current geropsychology in Africa.
Results
We identified a number of dominant themes including: subjective aging, psychosocial impact of widowhood at old age, aging in place, stress and caregiving, cognitive aging, interrelations between HIV and aging, and successful aging.
Discussion
The themes of psychological aging research identified as especially relevant in Africa provide a starting point for psychological aging researchers in general to engage with the African context. Many African countries may be facing common challenges, but the existing studies are not fully representative of the aging population in the continent. Creating a framework for organizing and coordinating funding will help to address the limited research on geropsychology in Africa. Collaborative research projects/programs, joint classrooms, and fellowships that support African geropsychology scholars will be helpful. Geropsychology will benefit from more engagement with the African context by applying innovative approaches such as the adoption of longitudinal designs, mixed method research, Experience Sampling Methods, translation of measures into indigenous languages, involvement of rural samples, and implementation science and community engaged research.

Oct 24th 2023, 13:37

Abstract
Trustworthiness judgments of faces play an important role in social interactions. Although previous studies indicate facial judgments can be modulated by some additional information (such as behavioral history), few studies have paid attention to the effect of interpersonal distance on trustworthiness judgments of faces. Interpersonal distance is a critical proxy of interpersonal relationship and motivation. The current study aimed to examine whether imagined interpersonal distance with or without a physical distance cue (image size) could modulate facial trustworthiness judgments. In a series of four experiments, the current study shows that faces are judged as more trustworthy as the imagined interpersonal distance increases. More importantly, it is the first to show that imagined interpersonal distance has a larger effect on facial evaluations than does image size.

Oct 24th 2023, 12:47

Journal of Planning Education and Research, Ahead of Print. In this Commentary, I respond to a Commentary by Petter Næss that critiques the use of meta-analysis for reviewing the literature on travel and the built environment. I describe how each of Næss’s four challenges to the use of meta-analysis can be at least partially resolved through the use of meta-regression analysis instead. I also note important limitations of the literature review method that Næss recommends as an alternative to meta-analysis. While meta-regression is not a perfect method, I argue that it offers valuable features for understanding planning research that literature review and meta-analysis do not.

Oct 24th 2023, 12:38

Abstract
Several years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, the world is still far from achieving its emission reduction target. Despite the scientific certainty of the devastating effects of climate change on human rights, countries’ ‘nationally determined contributions’ (NDCs) still fall short of the 1.5 °C goal. Compared to developed countries and their historical contributions, the Global South’s role in climate mitigation may appear insignificant. However, the magnitude of the human rights effects of climate change are enormous. Any increase above 1.5 °C would endanger human well-being and the ecosystems on which human life depends. Therefore, all parties must cooperate to adopt more ambitious NDCs. This imperative—while falling mainly on the Global North, which holds significant historical responsibility for emissions—also extends beyond the Global North, to, for example, a country like Brazil. This article assesses how fair share has played a role in climate litigation cases in the Global North (primarily in Europe) and discusses the possibilities and challenges of bringing similar cases in Brazil. It relies on the fair share methodology used to substantiate the argument of increased ambition in cases in the Global North, discussing whether a similar argument could be brought in Brazil.

Oct 24th 2023, 12:22

Abstract
In this review, we explore how bicultural competence, or the extent to which individuals effectively balance two cultures, can exist at a dyadic level, where two individuals’ respective levels of cultural competence determine how effectively the dyad engages with their environment and collectively manages challenges associated with navigating two cultures. We review existing literature relevant to this concept, which we call dyadic bicultural competence, focusing on intimate partners. Research in this area is limited, and there have been mixed findings regarding how partners’ cultural competencies relate to relationship functioning. We propose a model based on established models of relational strain and culture in family dynamics, explaining how dyadic bicultural competence can be associated with relationship trajectories. This proposed model provides a framework that explains mixed findings in this area and may be helpful in guiding future work exploring the role of cultural competence in individual and relational functioning for migrants.

Oct 24th 2023, 12:19

Abstract
In the United States (U.S.), premature mortality in adulthood from suicide, alcohol-related disease, and substance overdoses has increased steadily over the past two decades. To better understand these trends, it is necessary to first examine the harmful behaviors that often precede these preventable deaths (i.e., suicidal ideation and attempts, and harmful alcohol and substance use). Representing critical developmental periods in which psychopathology is most likely to emerge, childhood and adolescence provide an informative lens through which to investigate susceptibility to harmful behaviors. This article synthesizes current evidence describing these rising U.S. mortality rates and the prevalence rates of harmful behaviors linked to these types of mortality. A brief selective review of longitudinal research on harmful behaviors in relation to the most relevant categories of child and adolescent psychopathology is then provided. Finally, recommendations for future research and implications for prevention are discussed.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to put pressure on households UK-wide, deepening poverty is an everyday reality for those needing to use social work services. Austerity policies have made the lives of many families and communities harsher and harder and social workers routinely observe the detrimental impact of reduced income, welfare, and state support on people needing services.

One of the few indoor public spaces open to all comers, libraries are now the scene for all that ails a public scarred by the pandemic and an opioid epidemic. For staff, that means reversing overdoses in bathrooms; confronting patrons watching pornography; or defending against people brandishing guns, or a snake in a jar. Some people come to the library to sleep, get warm or use the bathroom. Others are looking for jobs, housing or just somewhere safe to read.
