Nov 23rd 2023, 13:58

Abstract
This article analyses the self-reflective process and narratives of 12 lifestyle migrants who settled between 1990 and 2010 in a rural Andean community in southern Chile. The results show that the time of their arrival and the migrants’ life stages were relevant in their reflective process regarding belongingness to the local community and other migrants, the search for an ontological sense and a critical perspective into how their migration affected rurality. The article discusses how rural fantasies and dissatisfaction with modern urban life are central elements in constructing a self and we-image, as well as a compass that enables them to integrate into the rural community while becoming increasingly aware of how their presence inevitably changes rurality.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/meta-analyses-systematic-reviews/14713012231205610/) Use of adapted or modified methods with people with dementia in research: A scoping review
Nov 23rd 2023, 13:23

Dementia, Ahead of Print. People with dementia are excluded from research due to methodological challenges, stigma, and discrimination. Including perspectives of people with dementia across a spectrum of abilities is essential to understanding their perspectives and experiences. Engaging people living with dementia in qualitative research can require adaptation of methods.Qualitative research is typically considered when researchers seek to understand the perspectives, lived experiences, or opinions of individuals’ social reality. This scoping review explores current use of adapted methods with people with dementia in qualitative research, including methods used and impacts on the engagement as it relates to meeting accessibility needs. This review considered rationales for adaptations provided by authors, particularly whether authors identified a human rights or justice rationale for adapting methods to promote accessibility and engagement. This review began with a search of primary studies using qualitative research methods published in English in OECD countries from 2017 to 2022. Two reviewers screened titles and abstracts for inclusion. Full texts were reviewed, and data from included studies were extracted using a pre-determined chart. Content analysis of rationales was conducted and reviewed by all authors. Studies were assessed for findings related to impacts of adapted methods.Twenty-eight studies met inclusion criteria. Adaptations to qualitative research methods ranged from minor changes, such as maintaining a familiar interviewer, to more extensive novel methods such as photo-elicitation techniques. Twenty-seven studies provided a rationale for adapting their methods. No studies assessed impacts of their methodology on engagement or accessibility. Five studies observed that their methodology supported engagement. This review helps understand the breadth of adaptations that researchers have made to qualitative research methods to include people with dementia in research. Research is needed to explore adaptations and their impact on engagement of persons with dementia with a range of abilities and backgrounds.

Nov 23rd 2023, 09:29

Many of the studies on the sex ratio at birth (SRB) are based on a small number of cases over a short period of time. Taking a multivariate approach to a dataset consisting of nearly 199 million birth records in the United States from 1968 to 2019, we present a detailed analysis of several possible factors that might affect the sex ratio at birth (SRB) and its patterns of variation. We found that race/ethnicity is the variable with the strongest influence on this index. Parental age, birth order and solar radiation also have a bearing on the SRB, albeit only to a moderate degree. The historical evolution of the SRB among Black and American Indian and Alaska Native populations remains unexplained.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/14687941231206770/) At home in the field, in the field at home? Reflections on power and fieldwork in familiar settings
Nov 23rd 2023, 09:19

Qualitative Research, Ahead of Print. Critical epistemologies and methodologies have over time challenged the static and mono-dimensional approaches to fieldwork, allowing researchers to contemplate and conduct their research in spaces of in-betweenness. Despite this important shift, the essentialist idea that both ‘the field’ and ‘home’ in a fieldwork setting must be actual places persists. In this article, we challenge the conceptualization and operationalization of ‘home’ not only as the juxtaposition to ‘the field’, but also as the embodiment of a place in a specific temporality. We argue that the postulation of ‘home’ as a constant disregards the non-predetermined and unpredictable nature of fieldwork relationships that are often complicated by implicit and explicit power dynamics, especially in places researchers identify as ‘home’. We demonstrate that unequal power relations, especially (1) between the Global North and Global South, (2) between majority and minoritized groups, (3) among genders, and (4) between elites and non-elites, require us to envisage ‘the field’ and ‘home’ in relative terms. We propose the reconceptualization of fieldwork place as a hybridized space that conjoins ‘the field’ and ‘home’ as ‘field-home’, particularly at a time when research mobility is restricted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this way, we extend the literature on issues related to power, positionality and reflexivity in qualitative research, and provide practical insights for those preparing for fieldwork.

Nov 23rd 2023, 07:19

In the U.S., approximately 11% of infants are born small for gestational age (SGA). While there are many known behavioral risk factors for SGA births, there are still many factors yet to be explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the maternal early menarche (< 12 years old)- SGA birth association. Data were retrieved from the 2011-2017 National Survey of Family Growth, and multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the association. Approximately 4% of mothers reported having an SGA infant and 24% of mothers reported early age at menarche. After controlling for maternal age, race/ethnicity, and annual household income, early menarche was associated with 3% increased odds of SGA, although this finding was not statistically significant (adjusted odds ratio: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.70, 1.53). Additional research is needed on the long-term birth outcomes and health consequences of early menarche.

Nov 23rd 2023, 05:26

Perspectives in Public Health, Ahead of Print. Aims:There is a need for interventions that meet the needs of low socioeconomic status (SES) groups, to encourage the adoption of healthy diets and physical activity, in line with current public health guidance. This qualitative research used co-production, a method which actively involves the relevant community, to identify and describe public health interventions to support a group of mothers of young children living in a low SES area. Methods:A group of 20 mothers took part in three in-depth qualitative interviews to discuss in detail the type of support that would be of value to them for the adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviours. The mothers were subsequently invited to take part in a public engagement project, a community-based self-help group. Results:Four themes explained the principles of interventions that would be of value in supporting the mothers with the adoption of healthy behaviours, namely, a community-based self-help group, support for the whole family and support in the home and influencing the environment. These were then further developed into two types of intervention (1) learning for self-help and family care, which encompassed the first three learning-based themes and (2) community of support, which covered influencing the environment and the experience of the community-based self-help group.Conclusion:Co-production enabled a group of mothers of young children, from a low SES area, to describe the type of support that would help them with the establishment and maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviours. A community-based self-help group warrants further research.

Nov 23rd 2023, 03:53

Abstract
Objective
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder treated using psychological interventions, yet outcomes remain limited. Emotional difficulties are recognised as a treatment target. This research programme developed and evaluated feasibility of an emotion-focused therapy for adults with AN.
Methods
Phase One intervention development utilised ‘intervention mapping’. Qualitative research drew on lived experience highlighting objectives for change. Empirical evidence was synthesised into hypotheses of core emotional difficulties and an associated model of change. Relevant psychotherapeutic theory-based change methods were integrated to form the Specialist Psychotherapy with Emotion for Anorexia in Kent and Sussex (SPEAKS) intervention, guidebook and clinician training package. Phase Two tested SPEAKS in a single-arm, multisite feasibility trial across two specialist services, utilising prespecified progression criteria, and embedded process evaluation.
Results
SPEAKS was 9–12 months (40 sessions) of weekly individual psychotherapy, drawing on a range of psychotherapeutic modalities, predominantly Emotion Focused Therapy and Schema Therapy. Forty-six participants consented to feasibility trial participation; 42 entered the trial and 34 completed. Thirteen of 16 feasibility criteria were met at green level and three at amber, highlighting areas for improving model adherence.
Conclusions
A randomised controlled trial is indicated. Therapist training and guidebook adjustments to improve model adherence are suggested.
