(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/emo0001148/) A divergent effect of stimulus perceptual details on affective and semantic representations of valence.
Aug 29th 2023, 12:29

Emotion, Vol 23(5), Aug 2023, 1236-1253; doi:10.1037/emo0001148
The current work investigated the potential dissociation between two modes of valence: affective valence (valence of the emotional response) and semantic valence (stored knowledge about the valence of an object/event). A series of six experiments systematically examined the divergent effect of manipulating the amount of perceptual details on affective valence and semantic knowledge about valence. We predicted that affective valence, more than semantic valence, will be affected by manipulating the amount of stimulus perceptual details. Experiment 1a manipulated the amount of perceptual details by presenting the same stimulus content with different quantity of perceptual details. We compared three conditions: a very short movie clip, a still picture that was taken from the movie clip, and a blurred version of the picture from the movie clip. Experiment 1b replicated Experiment 1a using a stronger filter for blurring the picture. Experiment 2 used different manipulation of filtering out visual perceptual details by comparing still pictures to outlined images. Experiment 3 generalized the results of Experiments 1 and 2 by comparing pictures and written words. Experiments 4a and 4b examined the hypothesis regarding the divergent effect of the amount of perceptual details on semantic and affective valence, using physiological signals and a reaction time task, measures that do not rely on self-reports. Results suggest that affective valence is more sensitive to the change in the amount of perceptual details of the stimulus than semantic valence. The psychological mechanism that might underlie this effect and the theoretical implications of the findings are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/the_reemergence_of_syphilis_among_females_of-3-aspx/) The Reemergence of Syphilis Among Females of Reproductive Age and Congenital Syphilis in Victoria, Australia, 2010 to 2020: A Public Health Priority
Aug 29th 2023, 11:29

Background
Syphilis notifications in Victoria, Australia, have been increasing over the past decade, with an increase in infectious syphilis (syphilis of less than 2 years in duration) cases in females of reproductive age and an associated reemergence of congenital syphilis (CS). Before 2017, there had been 2 CS cases in the preceding 26 years. This study describes the epidemiology of infectious syphilis among females of reproductive age and CS in Victoria.
Methods
Routine surveillance data provided by mandatory Victorian syphilis case notifications were extracted and grouped into a descriptive analysis of infectious syphilis and CS incidence data from 2010 to 2020.
Results
In 2020, infectious syphilis notifications in Victoria were approximately 5 times more than 2010 (n = 289 in 2010 to n = 1440 in 2020), with a more than 7-fold rise among females (n = 25 in 2010 to n = 186 in 2020). Females made up 29% (n = 60 of 209) of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander notifications occurring between 2010 and 2020. Between 2017 and 2020, 67% of notifications in females (n = 456 of 678) were diagnosed in low-caseload clinics, at least 13% (n = 87 of 678) of all female notifications were known to be pregnant at diagnosis, and there were 9 CS notifications.
Conclusions
Cases of infectious syphilis in females of reproductive age and CS are on the rise in Victoria, necessitating sustained public health action. Increasing awareness among individuals and clinicians, and health system strengthening, particularly targeting primary care where most females are diagnosed before pregnancy, are required. Treating infections before or promptly during pregnancy and undertaking partner notification and treatment to reduce risk of reinfection are critical to reducing CS cases.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/emo0001161/) Pleasant emotional feelings follow one of the most basic psychophysical laws (weber’s law) as most sensations do.
Aug 29th 2023, 10:29

Emotion, Vol 23(5), Aug 2023, 1213-1223; doi:10.1037/emo0001161
Emotion episodes may include a conscious aspect of the emotion, namely being aware of our own emotional experience. Despite explosion in research over previous years, it remains unclear how emotions reach awareness and become feelings. Already in 1884, William James argued that emotional feelings resemble ordinary sensations in this respect. Here, using a novel model-based ratio scale of emotion intensity, we provide one of the strongest pieces of evidence supporting James’ perceptual theory by showing that emotion awareness obeys one of the most fundamental laws of perception, Weber’s law. According to this law, stimulus encoding accuracy decreases with intensity. In this work, we asked participants to provide binary pleasant-versus-unpleasant reports of their experience when watching normed emotion-eliciting pictures (NAPS; Marchewka et al., 2014). The results validate our model’s measure of emotion intensity by showing its monotonous relation to picture norms. Most importantly, they show, for the first time, that in humans, pleasant emotion experiences follow Weber’s classical psychophysical law—indicating decreased encoding precision with increasing pleasantness. This result supports James’ theory, suggesting that (pleasant) emotions reach awareness just as ordinary sensations do. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
