(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/per0000520/) Conceptual development and case data for a modular, personality-based treatment for borderline personality disorder.
Aug 27th 2023, 13:33

Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment, Vol 14(4), Jul 2023, 369-380; doi:10.1037/per0000520
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a heterogenous condition, and variations in its presentation may be accounted for by individual differences in personality dimensions. Extant treatments for BPD are long term and intensive; it is possible that prioritizing the personality-based difficulties that underlie an individual’s symptoms may improve the efficiency of care. This article describes the conceptual background for the development of a novel, personality-based intervention for BPD (BPD Compass), which was informed by recent research on personality mechanisms maintainin this condition, and was designed to address gaps left by existing treatments and to be maximally efficient and disseminable. BPD Compass is a comprehensive, short-term package with a fully modular design that allows for personalization (e.g., all skills can be presented in isolation or in any order based on pretreatment assessment). We discuss the theoretical background for its development, an overview of the skills included in the treatment, as well as preliminary efficacy data. (https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/00938548231187414/) Day Reporting Centers and Recidivism: The Role of Social Support
Aug 27th 2023, 12:47

Criminal Justice and Behavior, Ahead of Print. Day reporting centers (DRCs) are increasingly popular alternative to traditional forms of supervision. Yet, studies that describe a fairly common set of programs and services among DRCs produce conflicting results regarding their efficacy, suggesting that as yet unobserved characteristics of DRCs might explain their varying efficacy. This article relies on a mixed-methods analysis of DRCs. Using quasi-experimental regression techniques and a conservative control group to estimate the average treatment effect of DRC participation, we analyze recidivism outcomes (arrests and convictions) after a 2-year follow-up period. We then draw on qualitative interview data to reveal which aspects of the DRC programs’ clients identify as most important for successful re-entry. Our analysis suggests that DRCs reduce recidivism for participants by 10.8 (convictions) to 12.8 (arrests) percentage points. Our interview data suggest that high levels of social support from justice-involved DRC staff amplify the effects of programming to help explain this outcome.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/7209849/) Multivariate Small-area Estimation for Mixed-type Response Variables With Item Nonresponse
Aug 27th 2023, 11:41

Abstract
Many surveys collect information on discrete characteristics and continuous variables, that is, mixed-type variables. Small-area statistics of interest include means or proportions of the response variables as well as their domain means, which are the mean values at each level of a different categorical variable. However, item nonresponse in survey data increases the complexity of small-area estimation. To address this issue, we propose a multivariate mixed-effects model for mixed-type response variables subject to item nonresponse. We apply this method to two data structures where the data are missing completely at random by design. We use empirical data from two separate studies: a survey of pet owners and a dataset from the National Resources Inventory. In these applications, our proposed method leads to improvements relative to a direct estimator and a predictor based on a univariate model.

Aug 27th 2023, 11:23

Neuropsychology, Vol 37(5), Jul 2023, 531-543; doi:10.1037/neu0000899
Objective: Phonological working memory impairments associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have garnered interest due to reliable evidence of moderate- to large-magnitude between-group (ADHD vs. control) effects, as well their association with a wide range of secondary impairments. However, previous studies are methodologically limited in their ability to identify potential underlying mechanistic processes. This study aimed to examine converging and diverging patterns of omission, intrusion, and transposition errors to parse-specific mechanistic processes that contribute to ADHD-related phonological working memory deficits. Method: Fifty-four children with ADHD (45 males, nine females) and 65 typically developing (TD; 50 males, 15 females) children aged 8–12 (M = 9.62, SD = 1.52) years completed a computer-based phonological working memory task that aurally presented a random series of jumbled numbers and one letter. Children were instructed to verbally respond by stating the numbers from least to greatest, followed by the letter. Children’s incorrect responses were coded as errors of omission, intrusion errors, or transposition errors. Results: Results indicated a significant moderate-magnitude between-group difference in total omission and transposition errors, and a significant small-magnitude between-group difference in total intrusion errors. An examination of specific error types supported evidence of ADHD-related deficits in reordering and updating central executive processes. Conclusion: Collectively, these findings contribute to a more precise understanding of underlying mechanistic processes in ADHD-related working memory deficits and hold potential to inform the development of novel working memory metrics and working memory-based interventions for ADHD. Aug 27th 2023, 08:48

Palliative Medicine, Ahead of Print. Background:Spirituality refers to the dynamic dimension of human life that relates to the way that persons experience meaning, purpose, and transcendence. The complex task of parenting a child with a life-limiting condition may raise existential questions, which are easily overlooked by healthcare professionals.Aim:We explored how the spiritual dimension becomes manifest in parents of children in pediatric palliative care.Design:A mixed-methods systematic review was conducted, registered in Prospero (2021 CRD42021285318).Data sources:PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycInfo, and Cochrane were searched for articles published between January 1, 2015 and January 1, 2023. We included original empirical studies that reported on spirituality of parents of seriously ill children, from parents’ perspectives.Results:Sixty-three studies were included: 22 North-American, 19 Asian, 13 European, 9 other. Studies varied in defining spirituality. We identified five different aspects of spirituality: religion, hope, parental identity, personal development, and feeling connected with others. All aspects could function as source of spirituality or cause of spiritual concern. Sources of spirituality helped parents to give meaning to their experiences and made them feel supported. However, parents also reported struggling with spiritual concerns. Several parents highlighted their need for professional support. Conclusions:Although studies vary in defining spirituality, reports on spirituality focus on how parents connect to their faith, others, and themselves as parents. Healthcare professionals can support parents by paying attention to the spiritual process parents are going through. More research is needed into how healthcare professionals can support parents of seriously ill children in this process.

Currently, 8,106 children and youth are in foster care across Kentucky because of one of those reasons, according to the Administrative Office of the Courts.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/02610183231185756/) Attacking transnationalism and citizenship: British Bangladeshis, family migration, and the postcolonial state
Aug 27th 2023, 04:24

Critical Social Policy, Ahead of Print. In July 2012, major changes to the family migration rules were made in the UK, severely restricting British and settled residents’ rights to sponsor non-EEA family members. However, little is known about how they have been experienced in practice, particularly by the South Asian families they target. Our article draws on policy and media analysis alongside original qualitative research to shed light on how the 2012 family migration rules have impacted British Bangladeshis, and with what consequences for their experiences of citizenship and the possibilities of them leading transnational lives. We argue that the rules amount to a raced, gendered, and classed ‘attack’ on both transnationalism and citizenship and suggest that, while transnationalism and citizenship are often analysed separately, they are in fact deeply intertwined.
