ABSTRACT

Background

The implementation strategies used to facilitate the delivery of youth mental health interventions are rarely reported. Specifying and reporting implementation strategies for impactful innovations that have demonstrated good clinical outcomes has the potential to support replication in other contexts and accelerate the adoption of effective youth mental health interventions.

Methods

Key project personnel conducted a retrospective review of implementation strategies used in a national programme of enhanced primary care youth mental health services. These strategies were classified and reported using the pragmatic implementation-reporting tool. We used univariate statistics to describe the implementation strategy types, temporality, dosage and actors. We conducted linear regression techniques to predict time investment.

Results

We identified 30 implementation strategies used across the course of one year. Twenty percent of strategies identified were in the domains of evaluative and iterative strategies and stakeholder engagement. This was followed by training and educating stakeholders, providing interactive assistance and supporting clinicians. In terms of dosage, interactive assistance accounted for over half of all time invested. Interactive assistance was the only category to predict increased person hours.

Conclusions

By specifying and reporting the implementation strategies used in a youth mental health primary care programme, the pragmatic implementation-reporting tool can help demonstrate resourcing and skills required to reach programme sustainment.

ABSTRACT

Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities experience stark health inequalities in the UK, including reduced life expectancy and limited-service access. Ethnic monitoring within the National Health Service is promoted as a tool to identify and address such inequalities, yet how these communities experience such practices remains underexplored. Drawing on 11 co-produced focus groups with 86 self-identified Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller participants across the UK, this article examines perceptions surrounding ethnic monitoring. Using Bourdieu’s concepts of field, habitus, symbolic violence and social capital, alongside intersectionality, we reveal how disclosure of ethnicity is simultaneously desired as recognition and feared as potential stigmatisation. Participants reported identity concealment, inadequate categorisation, racism, gendered and cultural barriers and literacy and digital exclusions, while also expressing desire for visible signs of respect and cultural recognition. Ethnic monitoring emerges not as a neutral administrative practice, but as a contested site where power differentials are reproduced. Only if reframed as a practice of recognition and justice, supported by inclusive categories, cultural competence and genuine partnership with Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller organisations, can ethnic monitoring contribute to health equity.

Abstract

Background

UK inpatient mental healthcare services face ongoing challenges of safety and staff shortages. People experiencing psychosis account for around half of admissions, with over half readmitted within 7 years. Care is organized around the therapeutic alliance between patients, their carers and staff, yet no systematic review has synthesized the views of all three groups within UK inpatient settings.

Aims

(i) To identify and appraise qualitative studies examining experiences of inpatient mental healthcare from the perspectives of patients with psychosis, carers and staff; (ii) To synthesize findings to deepen understanding of these experiences:

Method

A systematic search of three databases identified 21 relevant studies. All were appraised using an adapted Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool. Data were extracted and synthesized using meta-ethnography.

Results

Study quality varied. Three key constructs emerged: (1) Power and Control in the Inpatient Setting; (2) Atmospheres of Care and (3) Connection and Recovery. Patients, carers and staff described multifaceted challenges within conflict-laden environments. Experiences ranged from confusion, disconnection, and threat to safety, understanding, and recovery, shaped by relational and communicative practises. Where patients felt informed, carers included and staff supported, experiences were more positive. Conversely, institutional routines may function as defences against emotional strain, risking relational detachment.

Conclusions

Inpatient services support individuals experiencing acute distress and risk, underscoring the emotional intensity of these settings. Despite policy emphasis on deinstitutionalization, inpatient care remains essential. Future research should further explore staff and carer experiences to inform relationally attuned service design.

May 21st 2026, 03:29

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims

Mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression are prevalent, most notably among vulnerable populations. Psychobiotics are live microorganisms that, when ingested in adequate amounts, may confer mental health benefits via the gut-brain axis. They represent a promising but poorly understood intervention. This study aimed to assess consumer knowledge about psychobiotics and explore the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as the influence of socio-demographic factors on mental health awareness.

Methods

A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 427 participants, including Romanian residents (87.1%) and Romanians living abroad (12.9%). The questionnaire gathered information on psychobiotic awareness, mental health knowledge, and self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression over the past 6 months. Statistical analyses were performed to identify associations between socio-demographic factors (age, gender, education, and geographic location) and mental health outcomes.

Results

Although 60% of the respondents were familiar with probiotics, only 18.4% reported being very familiar with psychobiotics. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001), reflecting a clear disparity in public knowledge between these two terms. Occasional depressive symptoms (26.8%) were more frequently reported than occasional anxiety (23.2%), yet anxiety was more common than depression when experienced regularly (13.8% vs. 10.3%). Notably, 64.2% of respondents stated that reliable information about psychobiotics is lacking in Romania.

Conclusions

These findings show limited public awareness of psychobiotics, despite the growing interest in gut and brain health. Targeted public health and educational initiatives are necessary to close this knowledge gap and promote psychobiotics as a potential tool for enhancing mental health. Integrating information about psychobiotics into broader preventive health strategies could improve mental health literacy, foster informed choices, and support early interventions for anxiety and depression.

ABSTRACT

Although there is extensive research on invisible work and its relation to labor market performance, understanding this phenomenon from the perspective of women in multiple hierarchical positions in the Middle East remains limited. This study integrates a situated intersectionality perspective with the literature on invisible work mechanisms to examine how Palestinian–Arab women in Israel from various social locations perceive, experience, and manage invisible work within their homes and how this shapes their participation in paid employment. Based on qualitative analysis of three group interviews with Palestinian–Arab women from diverse classes and geographic spaces in Israel, three interrelated themes emerged. First, the study uncovers overlooked types of invisible work shaped by gender, class, and space, intensified by large families and extended kin roles in a patrilocal context. Second, women were found to adopt a self-sacrifice ideology while seeking to balance paid and unpaid work, yet their perceptions of self-sacrifice vary according to class and space, particularly where these intersect with structural constraints. Third, the analysis shows how social and structural inequalities shape both access to outsourcing and its legitimacy. Building on these findings, we introduce the concept of situated invisible work and develop a typology which captures how multiple intersecting layers of inequality shape women’s experiences of invisible work and its relation to paid work differently across social positions.

Freeing up hospital beds is a key element in reducing hospital waiting lists, but often a real challenge. Could councils’ efforts to “grow their own” social workers through apprenticeships be the answer? With people living with more complex conditions, the NHS says it is more important than ever to get them out of hospital quickly. Social workers are crucial to achieving this, but filling these roles as demand rises is a growing challenge. Across England, there were 1,650 vacancies for social workers in adult care in 2024-5, 8.8% of the total positions.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to translate and culturally adapt two important measures of theory of mind (ToM)—the Theory of Mind Inventory-2 (ToMI-2) and the Theory of Mind Task Battery (ToMTB)—into a Mandarin version (the ToMI-2-M and the ToMTB-M). The ToMI-2-M and the ToMTB-M were first developed through translation, expert validation, and a pilot study. Ninety-four autistic children and 43 verbal ability-matched non-autistic children (aged 2.5–8 years) were then tested to evaluate the psychometric properties of the two assessment tools. Both the ToMI-2-M and the ToMTB-M showed good internal consistency and test–retest reliability. Content validity was supported by an expert panel. Concurrent validity was supported by the two assessment tools’ correlations with other ToM tasks, visual perspective taking, inhibitory control, and autistic characteristics. The discriminative validity was demonstrated by significantly higher scores of non-autistic children than autistic children on these assessment tasks. Age-related changes and the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis also provided support. The ToMI-2-M and the ToMTB-M showed good psychometric properties and represent useful tools for assessing ToM abilities of autistic children and non-autistic children.
