ABSTRACT

Veterans with physical disabilities may experience substantial psychological burden (e.g., PTSD symptoms) and practical barriers to accessing conventional mental health services. VR-assisted meditation could offer a low-threshold alternative, but evidence in this population remains limited. The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of a VR-assisted meditation programme for veterans with disabilities. In a randomized controlled trial, 40 US veterans (mean age = 42 years) were assigned to either (a) weekly VR-assisted meditation sessions or (b) a no-intervention control condition. Psychological well-being (WHO-5), mindfulness (SMS), system usability (SUS) and user satisfaction (QUEST 2.0) were measured at baseline, post-intervention and follow-up. Compared with controls, the VR group showed higher post-intervention scores, with the clearest gains observed for psychological well-being and perceived system usability. Scores decreased slightly at follow-up but remained above the control condition. The pattern of benefits did not appear to differ by baseline anxiety level. VR-assisted meditation may be a feasible and acceptable approach for supporting well-being in veterans with disabilities. High perceived usability may support short-term engagement; however, the present findings are preliminary and do not establish clinical effectiveness or durability.

Deciding who gets credit for a research project is complicated, even when everyone has positive intentions. These collaborations can span years, and individual roles often shift over time. Students graduate, researchers move institutions and projects evolve. As a result, authorship decisions are often shaped not just by contributions, but by a set of informal or “hidden” rules that are rarely made explicit. Power dynamics can affect authorship.

ABSTRACT

Objective

This study investigates how different couple-based geographical mobility strategies affect employment probabilities for men and women in six European countries from a gender perspective.

Background

Although geographical mobility is often linked to improved labor market outcomes, women tend to face social and economic disadvantages compared to men. This discrepancy is frequently attributed to family migration dynamics, yet the specific effects of distinct couple mobility patterns remain underexplored.

Method

Using retrospective life-history data from the SHARELIFE survey (Waves 3 and 7), this study analyzes the probability of employment among 24,780 individuals aged 50+ across Sweden, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Linear probability panel models with fixed effects are employed to examine changes in employment before and after relocation across various couple mobility configurations, stratified by education level.

Results

Men consistently gain higher employment probabilities due to geographical mobility regardless of strategy. In contrast, women’s employment probabilities show more diverse patterns: single movers and those with higher education tend to experience higher chances of employment, whereas those with medium or low education, particularly when following a partner’s move, are more likely to face reduced employment opportunities. These patterns are consistent across countries and tend to accumulate over the life course.

Conclusion

Couple mobility strategies yield gendered labor market outcomes, reinforcing inequalities in access to employment, particularly for less-educated women.

ABSTRACT

Background

Social cognition (SC) involves mental processes underlying interactions. Children and adolescents with Down syndrome face sociocognitive challenges affecting relationships and well-being. This review systematically examines research on SC development in persons with Down syndrome.

Method

Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we systematically searched WoS and Scopus for peer-reviewed studies on SC in individuals with Down syndrome (0–19 years). Forty studies (2008–2024) met the criteria and were analysed and assessed for quality using the MMAT tool.

Results

Evidence does not clearly indicate age-related SC development in Down syndrome. Instead, language is the key factor influencing SC development. Individuals with Down syndrome show challenges in SC and emotion processing, specifically compared to typical development.

Conclusion

More research is needed, especially longitudinal and developmental trajectory studies, to clarify SC development in Down syndrome and its relation to age. These findings can guide educational and clinical strategies to improve social inclusion and well-being.

Abstract

Sustaining teaching as a respected and attractive profession is more critical than ever, particularly as teachers’ work becomes increasingly shaped by standardisation and accountability—conditions that have shown minimal positive impact while eroding the professional agency essential to job satisfaction. Drawing on a 15-year programme of research on the impact of an approach to professional development, known as Quality Teaching Rounds, including five randomised controlled trials and independent evaluations, this article examines how teaching can be made more appealing. QTR combines a research-based pedagogical framework, the Quality Teaching Model, with structured, collegial processes for observing, coding, and discussing lessons building on research on effective professional development. We identify four principles that underpin its potential in making teaching more attractive: recognising the realities of classroom life; providing clarity about what constitutes quality teaching; treating teaching as intellectual work; and showing respect for teachers. Together, these principles strengthen teachers’ professional identities and job satisfaction, positioning teaching as complex, intellectually demanding, and socially vital work. We argue that improving the appeal of teaching requires attention not only to remuneration and working conditions but also to how pedagogy and professional development are conceptualised. The evidence presented here, showing the impact of QTR on teaching quality, teacher morale, self-efficacy, and student attainment, offers fresh insights for policymakers and practitioners seeking to address workforce challenges and elevate the status of teaching, with implications for recruitment, retention, and teacher well-being across diverse educational contexts.

May 14th 2026, 01:39

Abstract

This article repositions the placenta as a central symbolic and psychic figure in the Jungian understanding of pregnancy, birth, and individuation. Drawing on the concept of psychic transparency (Bydlowski, 1997), it explores the heightened permeability of ego boundaries in the perinatal period and argues that the placenta operates not only as a biological organ but as a transitional object imbued with archetypal significance. Through Jungian, post-Jungian, and phenomenological perspectives, the placenta is revealed as both a mediator of life and an image of shadow—simultaneously nurturing and obstructive, connective and severing.

Special attention is given to the moment of placental delivery, reinterpreted as an archetypal act of separation analogous to the alchemical nigredo phase, and to placenta praevia, framed as a symbolic expression of resistance to individuation and severance. Case material and cultural rituals are used to show how the unconscious may register unintegrated placental experiences as psychic residue, dream material, or somatic symptoms. Therapeutic encounters during pregnancy and postpartum are also examined, with particular emphasis on countertransference and the symbolic resonance of the clinical space as a maternal container.

The article proposes a renewed Jungian ethics of birth—one that restores symbolic and psychological meaning to the somatic processes of gestation and parturition. In doing so, it argues for the need to reimagine not only childbirth but also the delivery of the placenta as a vital moment in the psychic life of the mother, the infant, and the therapeutic relationship.

Abstract

Objectives

Sufficient physical activity (PA) reduces the risk of chronic disease. In Australia, men experience higher rates of overweight, obesity and cardiovascular disease than women. Gender-sensitized PA interventions like Australian Fans-In-Training (Aussie-FIT) leverage men’s interest in sport to promote behaviour change and have shown promise for initiating PA. However, maintaining these changes remains a challenge. While previous research has identified barriers and facilitators to men’s PA engagement, fewer studies examine how engagement evolves over time. This study aimed to explore how men make sense of their PA behaviour change journey during and after the 12-week Aussie-FIT program.

Design

Qualitative study using individual semistructured interviews conducted 3 months post-program.

Methods

Ten men (mean age = 58.2, SD = 8.85 years) participated in interviews. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, with themes deductively mapped to the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF).

Results

Five themes were developed: Rediscovering the joy of physical activity through football; Social support in multiple contexts; Physical activity becoming ‘second nature’; Seeking and seizing opportunities and ‘It really inspired me to keep going, but then it stopped’. Themes mapped to seven TDF domains, with behavioural regulation, environmental context and resources and social influences most relevant for sustaining PA. Early engagement was supported by sport-based identity, nostalgia and social connection, while later engagement involved self-regulatory strategies and transitional support needs.

Conclusions

These results offer novel, process-oriented insights into how men engage with PA over time, reinforcing the dynamic nature of PA maintenance and the value of tailoring interventions to support men across the behaviour change journey.
