ABSTRACT

Art inhabits the imagination, but can it influence real-world issues? While some scholars cast art as autonomous from moral and civic life, others see it as deeply entangled with the social world. We address this debate by synthesizing evidence on art’s social influence across literature, music, visual art, and film. We organize findings across four domains—civic engagement, gender equality, intergroup relations, and environmental conservation—and highlight psychological levers through which effects emerge. Our review reveals that art can shape attitudes and behavior, but not always for the greater good. Counter-stereotypical works and prosocial content often shift norms and broaden moral concerns, while degrading or status-quo-affirming content can entrench social divides. We outline priorities for future research: isolating art-specific effects, probing harmful outcomes, testing the durability and real-world impact of effects, and developing an integrative framework to clarify when, how, and for whom art moves behavior in the social world.

Civilizations, as the historian Arnold J. Toynbee famously argued, “die from suicide, not by murder.” They collapse from within. They fall prey to moral, social and spiritual decay. They are seized by a parasitic ruling class. Democratic institutions seize up. The citizenry is immiserated, wealth is funneled upwards to the ruling class and coercion is the principle form of control. Our suicidal march began long before the current President and his bizarre court of buffoons, sycophants, grifters and Christian fascists took power. It began when the ruling class, especially under the Reagan and Clinton administrations, set out to harvest the country and empire for personal profit.

ABSTRACT

Housing and neighbourhood contexts are critical social determinants of health for children and youth. However, little is known about how co-occurring socioecological factors, including household, housing and neighbourhood contexts, cumulatively influence child and youth health risks. The aims of this study were to examine the combined effects of household-, housing- and neighbourhood-based risk and protective factors on child and youth health risks. Using data from the 2023 National Survey of Children’s Health (N = 55 162), we address the following research question: (1) To what extent are household-, housing- and neighbourhood-based risk and protective factors cumulatively associated with child and youth health risks? We utilize ordered logistic regression to examine relationships between household demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, housing hardships and neighbourhood-based risk and protective factors on child and youth health risks. Results indicated that household- (OR = 1.36) and community-based adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) (OR = 3.11), as well as housing hardships, including difficulties paying rent (OR = 1.21), homelessness experiences (OR = 1.39) and eviction-related stress (OR = 1.26), were associated with health risks. Neighbourhood safety (OR = 0.86), support (OR = 0.81) and family resilience (OR = 0.82) were protective against health risks. Children and youth experiencing the highest health risks were more likely to face greater hardships across housing and neighbourhood contexts compared to those who experienced moderate, low and no health risks. Findings highlight a need for preventive interventions that address housing and neighbourhood factors that undermine health. Implications for social work research, policy and practice are discussed.

ABSTRACT

A key explanation for variation in migration outcomes across destinations lies in the selectivity of migrants. This paper argues that combining intended destination with migration preparation provides a useful indicator of early-stage migration selectivity, capturing how migrants with different destination intentions differ before departure. Using Afrobarometer Round 7 data, the study examines how educational attainment and religious affiliation shape migration preparation across three destination regions: Africa, Europe and North America. The findings highlight three salient patterns: (1) preparation for Europe follows a bifurcated pattern, with the highest and lowest educated more likely to prepare; (2) post-secondary education is positively associated with migration preparation for North America; (3) Muslim affiliation is positively associated with preparation for intra-African migration. These results suggest that preparation, when considered in conjunction with intended destination, provides a valuable proxy for early-stage selection that is aligned with, and complementary to, existing evidence on migrant selectivity at destination.

ABSTRACT

Objective

We examined how the expansion of Medicaid audio-only coverage (MAOC) was associated with changes in mental health visit rates at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).

Data

We used publicly available FQHC-level Uniform Data Systems (UDS) data (N = 9606 FQHC-years) from 2016 to 2022. We used information from the Center for Connected Health Policy, Casetext, National Law Review, LegiScan, and other publicly available state telehealth laws and guidelines to map MAOC and other state-level Medicaid and telehealth policy variables.

Study Design

We employed a two-way fixed effects generalized difference-in-differences (DiD) estimator, followed by the Callaway–Sant’Anna DiD estimator, to assess the effect of MAOC on mental health visit rates in FQHCs. The outcome was defined as mental health visit rates, and the key independent variable was MAOC policy implementation. Time-varying state-level covariates, including mental health provider ratio, broadband access, Medicaid and telehealth policies, as well as FQHC-level covariates including the percentage of Medicaid-insured and low-income patients served, were included in the analysis. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on FQHC characteristics including rural/urban location and the presence of telemental health services (TMHS).

Principal Findings

DiD analysis showed no significant effect of MAOC on mental health visit rates across FQHCs. However, subgroup analyses revealed that FQHCs without an existing TMHS experienced a 20.5% increase in visit rates (p < 0.05), while those with a TMHS saw a 19.73% decrease (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Audio-only telehealth appears to serve as a substitute rather than a complementary modality for in-person or video-based mental health services in FQHCs. Providing MAOC increased mental health visit rates at FQHCs without an established telemental health service, indicating improved accessibility. Given the quality concerns surrounding audio-only telehealth, further research is needed to validate this substitution effect and assess the quality of introducing these services as an option for FQHCs.

<imgsrc alt="Faces and phases of epistemic curiosity in science learning: A longitudinal study"></imgsrc>

Different faces of epistemic curiosity shape science learning across development. While early scientific reasoning depends on the joint action of interest-type and deprivation-type curiosity, science knowledge is robustly driven by interest-type curiosity, revealing a developmental reweighting of motivational mechanisms.

Abstract

Curiosity is central to children’s development, particularly in science learning. This longitudinal study examines how epistemic curiosity, overall and its subtypes I-type and D-type, predicts scientific reasoning and science (physics) knowledge at the start (Grade 1) and end (Grades 3–4) of primary school, beyond prior knowledge and cognitive abilities. Parents of 122 children (mean age 6.12 years) completed an 11-item curiosity questionnaire. Scientific reasoning and science knowledge were assessed with standardized inventories and a 25-item physics test. Overall curiosity predicted early reasoning, whereas I-type curiosity predicted later science knowledge. These findings highlight that curiosity has distinct faces and phases: I-type and D-type operate differently at different developmental time points. Fostering both types supports multiple aspects of science competence.

Abstract

Objectives

Dental anxiety can significantly influence both oral health and overall quality of life. The present review aimed to estimate how common high dental anxiety is among adults worldwide, based on studies that used the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS).

Methods

A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out following predefined eligibility criteria. We searched studies published between 2000 and 2025 that reported the proportion of adults scoring ≥19 on the MDAS. Primarily cross-sectional observational surveys, as well as selected clinical observational studies, were included. Using a random effects model, we calculated pooled prevalence estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and conducted subgroup and sensitivity analyses to explore variation by time period and study setting.

Results

Nineteen studies, involving a total of 9267 participants, met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of high dental anxiety was 18% (95% CI: 0.10–0.30), with substantial between-study heterogeneity.

Conclusions

High dental anxiety may affect a substantial proportion of adults, depending on study context. These results emphasize the importance of prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing dental anxiety and promoting better oral health outcomes.

Abstract

There is currently a gap in knowledge around pupils’ growth mindset (GM) and attainment in Scotland, particularly in relation to Socioeconomic Status (SES). This study offers insights on the relevance of growth mindset in Scotland for attainment in mathematics by drawing on large-scale data from the OECD’s Programme for International Student Achievement (PISA). Using the PISA 2022 data, the study investigates the relationship between growth mindset, achievement and SES. In 2006, Dweck’s book ‘Mindset’ brought to the public attention the notion that young people’s beliefs about the nature of intelligence could themselves influence educational attainment and asserted that these beliefs were malleable. Later work by Claro, Paunesku and Dweck suggested that GM could mitigate the effects of poverty. Data from PISA 2022 were used to explore relationships between growth mindset (GM), SES and mathematics attainment in Scotland. Using multilevel modelling and multiple linear regression at individual and school level, this study explored how far variations in gender, SES, GM, perseverance and interaction between GM and SES could predict scores in mathematics. A significant association between positive GM and improved mathematics outcomes was found. High SES was also associated with improved mathematics outcomes. However, in contrast to findings in other contexts, an interaction effect between GM and SES was not associated with improved mathematics attainment.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the contradictory migration regimes governing seasonal migration of Thai nationals—predominantly farmers from Isan Region with strong migration aspirations—who travel to pick wild berries in Finland. Migration policy analysis and 14 semi-structured interviews with key social actors reveal the contested status of Thai wild berry pickers within both the sending and receiving states, as well as within the EU migration regime. This case highlights the incongruence of the Schengen visa policy and practice, where the visa granted does not align with the migrants’ intention. Recognised by Thai authorities as overseas migrant workers, Thai wild berry pickers are issued short-stay Schengen visas for tourism. Under Finland’s right to public access, Thai migrants pick wild berries as tourists without formal employment and labour protections. This practice of visa mislabeling increases the vulnerability of Thai workers and demonstrates how the migration regime creates a matrix that places Thai seasonal labour migrants in a precarious condition.
