Abstract

This study investigates the influence of executive functioning, language proficiency, and behavioral–emotional challenges on the academic performance of rural immigrant Latine youth in the Midwest. Using a convergent mixed methods design, we integrated quantitative analyses (N = 178) of academic indicators (GPA, Math, and ELA scores) with qualitative interviews (n = 47) that examined students’ lived experiences. Higher behavioral difficulties were associated with lower academic outcomes, while executive functioning predicted academic success. Qualitative findings revealed that behavioral challenges often stemmed from adaptive responses to language barriers, academic stress and social exclusion. These patterns suggest that the cognitive load of second-language acquisition influences student engagement in ways not fully captured by standardized assessments. Results highlight the importance of culturally responsive interventions that support bilingual instruction, executive functioning, and mental health to promote resilience among Latine ELL students.

Abstract

Background

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly prevalent in adults with anxiety and related disorders (ARDs). Quantitative research on this clinical population is mixed, with some studies suggesting that anxiety is protective against some symptoms of ADHD and others in which co-occurring ARDs and ADHD are linked to poorer clinical and psychosocial outcomes. There are also several under-researched clinical challenges, including missed or misdiagnosis and confusion around best treatment practices. Importantly, yet to be investigated are client perceptions of the relationship between ARD and ADHD symptoms, as well as the unique challenges co-occurrence raises related to assessment and treatment.

Objectives

The current study utilized a descriptive phenomenological approach to qualitatively investigate the lived experiences of adults with co-occurring ARDs and ADHD.

Design

Sixteen (N = 16) treatment-seeking adults at a specialized outpatient ARDs clinic participated in individual semi-structured qualitative interviews and completed a survey consisting of demographic, diagnostic and treatment history questions.

Methods

Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim, and Colaizzi’s seven-step approach for descriptive phenomenological thematic analysis was used to extract themes.

Results

Six themes were found, with the most common ones being (1) it’s complicated: perceived relationship between ADHD and anxiety symptoms, (2) diagnosis experiences: validation, surprise and integration and (3) system overload and polarizing experiences with symptoms and impairment.

Conclusions

The current study provides insights on the shared perceptions individuals have on the interconnectedness of their symptoms of ARDs and ADHD, and implications for improving assessment and treatment practices to better suit the needs of this clinical population.

The first signs of autism often become evident as early as before a child’s first birthday, and very early intervention is key to securing optimal outcomes. In the present study, two mother–child dyads participated, with mothers being trained in behavioural strategies targeting socio-communicative behaviours in their children, who were high-probability siblings of an older child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Both mothers demonstrated increased use of naturalistic behavioural strategies and excellent indices of maintenance and generalisation upon the conclusion of training. Children’s progress was measured in imitation, respondent joint attention and speaker behaviour, showing promising results in areas of significant concern at intake. Mothers’ satisfaction was assessed using a social validity questionnaire, and measures of children’s assent were collected, supporting the intervention as feasible and enjoyable for both dyads.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Previous research has shown the impact of disasters on the formal labor market at the county and city levels, but there is little research evaluating informal labor markets after three consecutive natural events affecting marginalized communities. We selected Puerto Rico, a territory impacted by three disasters, for a case study.

Method

Official surveys do not usually obtain data from marginalized communities. We conducted a survey and found that the post-disaster dynamics differ among marginalized communities.

Findings

Proximity to the center of the disaster, demography, and whether the setting is rural or urban can modify a community’s post-disaster labor market. In the case of the informal labor market, our findings contradict the official statistics and challenge the widespread stereotype that most adults in impoverished communities do not work when aid is received. Despite the aid received during the pandemic lockdown and the lower educational attainment in these communities than in the broader Puerto Rican population, both the case study communities exhibited relatively high labor attachment.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate the Parental Mental Health Literacy (PMHL) Scale for caregivers of children aged 0–6 years. Initial items were developed based on established mental health literacy and health literacy frameworks and were piloted among 1074 caregivers of children aged 0–6 years in Shanghai, China. Exploratory factor analysis using principal axis factoring with oblique rotation identified a four-factor structure. Confirmatory factor analysis was subsequently conducted to examine the dimensionality of the scale and to compare alternative models, including one-factor, higher-order, and bifactor models. The bifactor model demonstrated the best fit to the data (RMSEA = .088, CFI = .931, TLI = .917). The final version consisted of 28 items across four dimensions: recognition, help-seeking, awareness of parenting and parent–child interaction. Criterion validity was examined using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Early Warning Signs Checklist (WSC). PMHL scores showed modest negative correlations with children’s emotional and behavioral difficulties. Internal consistency was high (Cronbach’s α = .98; ωh = .89). These findings suggest that the PMHL may serve as a useful instrument for assessing parental mental health literacy in early childhood, although further validation in more diverse samples is warranted.

Background

Learning-based cognitive control (CC), the ability to adapt control strategies based on contextual regularities, has been studied in typically developing (TD) children but remains underexplored in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study investigates whether children with ADHD show intact learning-based CC and how it is affected by increased cognitive demands.

Methods

In a multicentric study, 7–14 years old children (145 ADHD [20F, mean = 10.4 ± 2.0], 97 TD [51F, mean = 10.4 ± 2.0]) completed two experimental tasks: a modified Flanker task and a cued go-noGo task. Both included a List-Wide Proportion Congruency (LWPC) manipulation to create different contextual predictability (mostly congruent/valid vs. half congruent/valid blocks). Reaction times (RTs) and accuracy were analyzed across blocks, and we also examined associations between task adaptation and neuropsychological (NPS) as well as questionnaire-based measures of CC, including inhibition, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and behavioral difficulties.

Results

Children with ADHD showed similar LWPC effects to TD peers in the Flanker task, suggesting preserved learning-based CC in low-demand contexts. In the cued go-noGo task, which involved greater attentional and inhibitory demands, children with ADHD displayed less efficient modulation of RTs and reduced speed-accuracy trade-off adaptation compared to TD peers. A composite NPS score predicted task adaptation. No associations were found with parental questionnaires.

Conclusions

Learning-based CC appears preserved in children with ADHD in simple contexts but is hindered under complex, multi-demand conditions. Neuropsychological performance may be a key mechanism underlying these group differences. These findings emphasize the need for ecologically valid paradigms and tailored interventions targeting complex CC challenges in ADHD.
