Objectives: In this mixed methods program of research, we investigated Indigenous participants’ experiences with racism at a Canadian postsecondary institution. Method: In Study 1 (N = 8), we interviewed Indigenous students or recent graduates about their experiences with racism and thematically analyzed their responses. We asked questions about what participants thought racism was, how frequently they experienced racism, how experiencing racism made them feel, which racist incidents were the most important to challenge, how they dealt with racism, and their positive experiences on campus as an Indigenous person. In Study 2 (N = 485), we surveyed Indigenous students about their experiences with racism. Participants responded to items about the frequency of potentially racist incidents, how those incidents made them feel, and if they considered those incidents as racist. They also responded to items about positive race-based experiences and their feelings about their on-campus experience. Results: In Study 1, participants experienced many different types of racism: internalized (including racial microaggressions, modern racism, and old-fashioned racism), interpersonal, institutional, and structural. They also shared the negative impacts of experiencing racism and the ways they challenged and coped with racism. In Study 2, participants indicated that they experienced racism on campus regularly and that these experiences tended to make them feel bad. Participants also experienced positive race-based experiences and felt good in these cases. Conclusions: Anti-Indigenous racism happens with alarming regularity at the institution and negatively impacts Indigenous participants, though participants actively push back against racism. We discuss the implications and future research directions. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract

Scholars studying cultural diversity in groups have largely overemphasized implications for objective outcomes, overlooking relevant processes that influence those outcomes (i.e., teamwork) and team member competencies related to cultural diversity (i.e., intercultural competence). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to longitudinally investigate the relationship between two indicators of cultural diversity (i.e., national variety and language disparity), team members’ intercultural competence, and perceptions of teamwork. A total of 501 professional women football players (M
age = 22.54 years, ± 4.46) from 21 teams across the top leagues in France (D1 = 177; D2 = 324) completed questionnaires pertaining to intercultural competence and teamwork, with 342 responding at all three time-points. Measures of national cultural variety and language disparity were computed using the Blau index and Matiti index, respectively. Using multilevel latent growth curve modeling, results showed that intercultural competence tended to be positively associated with perceptions of teamwork and that these relationships became stronger in teams that were more diverse. The results also indicated that this positive effect varied as a function of the type of cultural diversity being considered and that the relationship patterns were stable across time. For example, intercultural competence only positively predicted teamwork execution in teams with high levels of national–cultural variety. Such nuanced findings are discussed in detail herein, with implications to the literature and future research directions being put forward. Further, major strengths pertaining to the elite nature and size of the sample and the focus on women’s sport are emphasized.

ABSTRACT

This is a longitudinal stydy to explore the relationship between fear of disease progression and dyadic self-care in stroke patients and their spouses. Between August 2024 and May 2025, 369 stroke patient-spouse dyads completed two rounds of surveys, including the General Demographic Questionnaire, the Fear of Progression Questionnaire Short Form, the Fear of Progression Questionnaire Short Form/Partner, the Self-Care of Chronic Illness Inventory, and the Caregiver Contribution to Self-Care Chronic Illness Inventory. Contemporaneous and cross-lagged network analyses were used to examine the interaction between these variables in stroke patients and spouses. Contemporaneous networks confirmed: (1) At dimensional level, there is a positive association between patients’ self-care behavior and spousal contribution to self-care, as well as a positive association between their mutual fear of disease progression; (2) Spouses’ fear of disease progression negatively correlated with their spousal contribution to self-care at dimensional level. Cross-lagged network confirmed bidirectional predictions between: (1) patients’ fear of disease progression and their self-care; (2) spouses’ fear of disease progression and their contribution to self-care. Patients’ fear of disease progression and self-care dimensions predicted corresponding dimensions in spouses. The fear of disease progression and dyadic self-care among stroke patients and their spouses are dyadic phenomena and can predict each other. Stroke rehabilitation is a dynamic dyadic synergy; both partners’ behaviours and emotions change together. Future rehabilitation programs should be phased and multi-targeted. In the early phase, focus on disease knowledge and symptom management to alleviate physiological fear. In the later phase, reconstruct social roles and family communication, correct the cognitive biases of spouses regarding patients’ self-care behaviours, break negative loops, and promote mutual growth.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine longitudinal associations between a robust array of prenatal risk factors and infant socioemotional development. This prospective cohort study recruited pregnant adult U.S. women during the COVID-19 pandemic (N = 1585). The majority were non-Hispanic White, partnered and college-educated. Online surveys assessed prenatal and postpartum risk, indicated by maternal anxiety, maternal depression, financial hardship, insufficient partner support, pregnancy- and postpartum-specific stress and pandemic-related stress. Infant socioemotional development was assessed at M = 11.0 months with the Baby Pediatric Symptom Checklist. In linear regression models controlling for postpartum risk and additional covariates, prenatal risk was uniquely associated with greater infant inflexibility and difficulty with routines, but not with irritability. These associations were moderated by postpartum risk. Cumulative prenatal risk is associated with some dimensions of infant socioemotional functioning above and beyond postpartum risk; postpartum factors may heighten associations between prenatal risk factors and specific aspects of infant socioemotional functioning.

ABSTRACT

Background

Only half the children in Fiji meet both physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST) recommendations. Understanding factors associated with meeting these recommendations is important to inform the development of policies and programmes to encourage healthy behaviours. This study aimed to examine the association between Fijian caregivers’ and children’s attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control and their or their child’s adherence to physical activity and screen time guidelines.

Methods

We investigated Fijian caregivers and children aged 5–17 years attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control towards meeting PA and ST guidelines through an online survey. The survey explored these factors and their associations with meeting the Asia-Pacific Integrated 24-h Activity Guidelines for Children and Adolescents.

Results

A total of 1015 caregivers and 699 of their children completed the survey. Caregivers (OR = 1.4, CI 1.003–1.862) and children 5–8 years (OR = 16.5, CI 1.227–222.665) who believed being active would make them happier were more likely to meet PA recommendations compared to those not meeting PA recommendations. Caregivers who set ST restrictions (OR = 1.5, CI 1.252–1.816) and believed ST rules helped their child meet recommendations (OR = 1.3, CI 1.052–1.505) were more likely to have children who met ST recommendations versus not meet ST recommendations. Children aged 5–8 and older children/adolescents aged 9–17 who had easy access to screens were less likely to meet ST recommendations (OR = 0.5, CI 0.224–0.984) and (OR = 0.5, CI 0.324–0.802), respectively, compared to those who did meet ST recommendations. Children aged 5–8 years who believed it was important to follow the guidance of religious leaders were more likely to meet ST recommendations (OR = 5.4, CI 2.423–12.002) compared to those who did not meet the ST recommendation.

Conclusion

Communicating through trusted community figures (such as teachers and religious leaders for younger children and ministries for caregivers) is recommended for future initiatives to increase adherence to guidelines among children and adolescents in Fiji. These initiatives should also emphasise the link between PA and both happiness and academic performance, while exploring ways to support caregivers in enforcing ST restrictions.

ABSTRACT

Anti-trafficking governance in Moldova unfolds far from the conference rooms where global priorities are set. Drawing on ethnographically informed research and 15 interviews with frontline practitioners, this article shows how donor agendas shape the daily realities of anti-trafficking work, not only through funding, but through the softer pressures of reputation, metrics, and the symbolic authority of foreign expertise. Using coercion theory, the analysis reveals how external actors define what ‘counts’ as a victim, a solution or a successful intervention, often sidelining the contextual knowledge of Moldovan experts. Yet local actors do not simply comply. Over the decades from the 2000s to 2025, they crafted subtle, skillful strategies to manage, reinterpret and sometimes quietly resist donor expectations. Moldova thus becomes a strategic analytical lens for understanding how global anti-trafficking ambitions collide with local realities, and why interventions often fail to address the structural vulnerabilities that make exploitation possible.

ABSTRACT

There is an increasing emphasis on the need for more prevention initiatives targeting the rise of mental health issues, addiction and crime in the youth population across Europe. Youth outreach work has a long-standing tradition of working with marginalized youth; however, youth culture is dynamic, and there has been limited research in the field over the past two decades. In this article, we explore professional practice in youth outreach in three Norwegian cities, drawing on focus groups with 12 social workers and four individual interviews with managers. Our analytical framework combines reflexive thematic analysis and collective qualitative data analysis to identify the characteristics of youth outreach practices.

We identified three modes that constitute youth outreach practices: outreach, follow-up and mapping. To sustain a proactive approach, these modes need to be seen as interdependent and applied continuously.

Abstract

Aim

Our primary aim was to conduct a network meta-analysis (NMA) for the effectiveness, safety and acceptability of all psychosocial interventions and all pharmacotherapies for cannabis use disorder (CUD).

Methods

We conducted a NMA of studies identified from two completed systematic reviews examining the effectiveness, safety and acceptability of pharmacotherapies and psychosocial interventions for CUD in people aged ≥16 years. Outcomes were level of cannabis use, abstinence, adverse events and treatment completion.

Results

Fifty-seven studies were eligible for NMA. Depending on outcome, NMAs of psychosocial interventions included 6–16 studies (445–2287 participants), and NMAs of pharmacotherapies included 5–36 studies (260–3106 participants). Results are described relative to minimum clinically meaningful difference [mean difference (MD) ± 0.05, odds ratio (OR) ≤ 0.8 or ≥1.25].

Evidence for pharmacological interventions reducing cannabis use was very uncertain. However, low-certainty evidence suggested that dialectical behavioural/acceptance and commitment therapies [DBT/ACT; MD -0.18, 95% credible interval (−0.26 to −0.09)] and cognitive-behavioural therapy with motivation enhancement (MET-CBT) with contingency management [CM; MD -0.15 (−0.23 to −0.07)] reduced use frequency relative to a nonspecific comparator. Interventions including CM also supported abstinence (very low certainty). Limited, low-certainty evidence indicated that cannabidiol [OR 2.91 (0.45 to 27.98)], N-acetylcysteine [OR 1.30 (0.55 to 3.74)] and varenicline [OR 4.85 (0.65 to 48.26)] promoted abstinence compared with placebo, although cannabidiol was associated with adverse events [OR 1.58 (0.26 to 8.98)]. Very low-certainty evidence suggested mixed-action antidepressants, benzodiazepines, bupropion and buspirone also had more adverse events than placebo, without any indication of effectiveness. Very low-certainty evidence indicated that DBT/ACT and CM improved treatment completion. In contrast, MET-CBT, with/without affect management, reduced completion, relative to a nonspecific comparator. Low-certainty evidence suggested N-acetylcysteine [OR 1.29 (0.76 to 2.19)] and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol preparations [OR 1.32 (0.89 to 1.97)] increased treatment completion, while fatty acid amide hydrolase inhibitor [OR 0.80 (0.40 to 1.58)] and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [OR 0.56 (0.29–1.04)] reduced it, relative to placebo.

Conclusions

There is some evidence that dialectical behavioural/acceptance and commitment therapies, contingency management alone or with cognitive-behavioural therapy with motivation enhancement, N-acetylcysteine, cannabidiol or varenicline may facilitate abstinence, reduce use and/or support treatment completion for cannabis use disorder. Some interventions may have unfavourable effects on those outcomes, relative to placebo or nonspecific comparators. While safety data for psychosocial interventions is lacking, several pharmacotherapies may be associated with adverse events. These findings should be interpreted with caution as all evidence is low- to very-low-certainty due to imprecise or heterogeneous treatment effects and high risk of bias in some study results.

ABSTRACT

Adaptation to sea-level rise confronts coastal communities worldwide with a new set of collective action problems that require collaboration. When does collaboration result in concrete action for adaptation? To address this question, we combine the Ecology of Games and Collaborative Governance frameworks using a comparative analysis of three coastal regions in the United States. We leverage original survey data from the San Francisco Bay Area in California (2018, N = 878), the Tri-County (Charleston) Area in South Carolina (2022, N = 152), and the Hampton Roads region in Virginia (2023, N = 153), three regions that differ in terms of vulnerability, institutional capacity, and political culture. Across all three regions, we find that collaboration in sea-level rise adaptation is driven by a core set of high-capacity actors who build and participate across multiple planning forums in polycentric governance arrangements.
