ABSTRACT

Apologies are widely regarded as a crucial step in reconciliation, yet they are not always offered voluntarily. When transgressors do not apologize, victims may demand an apology to restore their sense of power. In this research, across four studies (total N = 869) we investigate how transgressors react when faced with a solicited apology. We propose that being explicitly asked to apologize decreases transgressors’ feelings of power and increases transgressors’ anger towards victims, ultimately leading to increased avoidance of victims. The pilot study and Study 1, utilizing a micro-narrative approach, suggested that while victims feel better after soliciting an apology, transgressors feel worse and seek to avoid the victim. In Study 2, using an experimental design, we found support for our full proposed model—transgressors have increased intentions to avoid the victim after being asked to apologize, mediated by the feeling of less power, but more anger. Study 3 replicated the significant serial mediation, this time using a dictator game design in which the real-time behavioral reactions of participants were examined. In Study 4, we tested whether transgression responsibility represents a boundary condition for the proposed serial mediation process. Together, these findings challenge the prevailing assumptions about the positive role of apologies and reveal a paradox: soliciting apologies may undermine the very reconciliation it aims to achieve, particularly when responsibility is ambiguous, contested, or not fully acknowledged by the transgressor.

To the Editor We read with great interest the study by Edwin Thanarajah et al published in JAMA Psychiatry. The authors present important findings on the association between soft drink consumption and the presence of depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Their analyses further suggest that this association is mediated by increased levels of Eggerthella, providing valuable insight into the potential microbiome-related mechanisms underlying MDD. The study reported that compared with healthy controls, soft drink consumption predicted the incidence of MDD diagnosis (odds ratio, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.01-1.16; P = .03) and symptom severity (partial η2, 0.01; 95% CI, 0-0.04; P < .001). Mediation analyses demonstrated that Eggerthella significantly mediated the association between soft drink consumption and MDD (diagnosis: P = .01; severity: P = .005), accounting for 3.82% and 5.00% of the overall effect, respectively. In their discussion, the authors suggest that increased Eggerthella growth may reduce butyrate production and enhance gut inflammation, thereby promoting neuroinflammatory processes that could mechanistically link soft drink consumption to depressive symptoms.

A systematic review found that adolescents who frequently see smoking in movies are significantly more likely to start smoking themselves. Despite growing awareness of the issue, tobacco imagery remains common: more than half of major box-office films released in 2024 included some form of tobacco depiction. Anti-smoking warnings shown before films can reduce pro-smoking attitudes slightly, but repeated on-screen smoking scenes often have a stronger effect. Alcohol follows a similar pattern. Teen films often frame drinking as harmless fun while downplaying addiction, injury and long-term health consequences. Studies link heavy exposure to these portrayals with earlier and riskier alcohol use among adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Humanitarian emergencies increasingly involve ongoing traumatic stress, characterised by a lack of environmental safety that is often required for recovery. Evaluating quality of life (QoL) and functioning is essential in these contexts, as symptom reduction alone may not capture the multidimensional nature of resilience and social adaptation under continuous threat. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions on nonsymptom-focused outcomes—specifically QoL and functioning—for populations facing ongoing violence or interpersonal violence. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of PubMed, Medline and PsycINFO was conducted. Interventions were categorised using layers two to four of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s MHPSS framework. Data from 18 studies (17 unique studies) comprising 3165 participants were synthesised using a narrative approach. Evidence indicates that both trauma- and present-focused interventions were likely to improve QoL and functioning despite ongoing threat. Comparison between interventions remained inconclusive. There were also discrepancies between informants regarding intervention outcomes. Future research should include operationalisation of ‘ongoing threat’ where possible and include and standardise nonsymptom-focused outcomes when evaluating interventions.

May 3rd 2026, 02:27

Background: Adolescents perceive both immediate and long-term benefits and losses related to internet gaming, affecting their risk of internet gaming disorder (IGD). These perceptions could also be shaped and reinforced by IGD, indicating potential bidirectionality. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the bidirectional relationships between perceived immediate and long-term benefits in 3 domains (mental health, social relationships, and personal achievement) and IGD, and between perceived immediate and long-term losses in 6 domains (mental health, sleep quality, academic performance, family relationships, social relationships, and personal achievement) and IGD. Methods: A 12-month 2-wave prospective longitudinal study was conducted among junior middle school students who had played internet games in the past 12 months in Guangzhou and Chengdu, China, with a baseline survey (T1, December 2018) and the other identical follow-up survey conducted 1 year later (T2, December 2019). The participating schools were conveniently selected; all Grade 7 and 8 students were invited to self-administer the questionnaires in a classroom setting without the presence of the schoolteachers. The final sample size was 1173 students (mean age 12.5, SD 0.6 y; male: 693/1173, 59.1%). IGD was assessed by using the 9-item IGD checklist. Results: Cross-lagged panel analysis (adjusting for background factors) showed (1) stronger perceived immediate benefits of mental health (=.08, 95% CI 0.01-0.15) and personal achievement (=.10, 95% CI 0.01-0.20) at T1 significantly predicted more IGD symptoms at T2; (2) more IGD symptoms at T1 significantly predicted stronger perceived immediate and long-term benefits of social relationships (immediate: =.09, 95% CI 0.03-0.15; long-term: =.11, 95% CI:0.05-0.17) and personal achievement (immediate: =.12, 95% CI 0.06-0.18; long-term: =.10, 95% CI 0.04-0.16) at T2; (3) more IGD symptoms at T1 significantly predicted stronger perceived immediate and future losses in mental health (immediate: =.09, 95% CI 0.03-0.15; long-term: =.08, 95% CI 0.02-0.14), sleep quality (immediate: =.10, 95% CI 0.04-0.16; long-term: =.13, 95% CI 0.07-0.19), academic performance (immediate: =.09, 95% CI 0.04-0.15; long-term: =.07, 95% CI 0.01-0.13), and family relationships (immediate: =.11, 95% CI 0.05-0.17; long-term: =.10, 95% CI 0.04-0.16) at T2, as well as perceived long-term losses in social relationships at T2 (=.08, 95% CI 0.02-0.14). Conclusions: This study was innovative in integrating time perspective into both perceived benefits and losses of internet gaming, a cognitive dimension previously overlooked in literature. The current findings advance the field by revealing the unidimensional predictive effects of IGD on perceived immediate and long-term benefits and losses, with 2 exceptions of perceived immediate and long-term benefits of mental health and personal achievement conversely predicting IGD. These results contribute to the development of effective interventions: the cognitive components should go beyond the general pros and cons of gaming and target the potential temporal bias gamers hold.

Emotion, Vol 26(3), Apr 2026, 567-580; doi:10.1037/emo0001598

Repeated assessments in everyday life allow for ecologically valid data on dynamic, within-person stress processes. However, typical designs offer little information on the immediate shape of affective responses following daily stressors, including the influence of situational and person-level variables. In a combined clinical and community sample (N = 248; recruited between 2016 and 2018), we employed a high-density intensive-longitudinal protocol (observations N = 1,442) to capture the temporal dynamics of affect in response to daily stressful events using a microburst design. Specifically, we implemented an adaptive signal-contingent schedule, where an initial stressor report triggered an intense burst of prompts in 15-min increments over the course of 1 hr inquiring about momentary affect. To model affective microtrajectories, we used multilevel structural equation modeling. A piecewise linear growth model consistently showed the best fit across all indices for both negative and positive affect. Affective responses to momentarily experienced stressors were best captured by a model that allowed for changes in affect trajectories over time (an initial steep decline/increase followed by gradual change), with more stressful situations amplifying these trajectories. Moreover, extraversion significantly influenced the initial rise in positive affect, leading to more pronounced early changes in those with higher levels of extraversion. In contrast, neuroticism had an opposite effect on positive affect, dampening these early changes. Results offer a detailed understanding of daily stress dynamics by providing insights into the immediate and evolving nature of affective responses to stress, with implications for personalized stress management strategies.

Abstract

In Pakistan, cultural taboos around reproductive health fuel persistent myths about oral contraceptives (OCs), limiting women’s empowerment and informed decision-making. While misconceptions affect several contraceptive methods, OCs face particular mistrust, with use far below global averages. Five widespread myths dominate public perception: that OCs cause permanent infertility, cardiovascular disease, birth defects, weight gain, and are religiously forbidden. Scientific evidence consistently disproves these claims. OC use does not impair long-term fertility, offers some cardiovascular benefits, and does not cause congenital anomalies or permanent weight gain. Additionally, Islamic teachings—supported by respected fatwas (Islamic legal rulings)—permit family planning to safeguard maternal and child health. Yet, contraceptive prevalence remains low in Pakistan, with only 34% of married women using any method. Early pregnancies, short birth intervals, and inadequate reproductive knowledge contribute to high maternal and neonatal mortality. Misunderstanding persists, with many women misinformed or influenced by social narratives rather than evidence. Healthcare professionals, together with educators, community leaders, and religious scholars, play a crucial role in counselling and dispelling myths. Promoting dialogue and evidence-based guidance can challenge harmful beliefs. Correcting these misconceptions is both a public health priority and a societal responsibility toward healthier families and empowered women.

ABSTRACT

Introduction

With some exceptions, alcohol cannot be sold in Australian supermarkets. The emerging availability of zero alcohol products (ZAP) in supermarkets is therefore introducing alcohol brands into this previously protected domain. The aims of the present study were to examine the prevalence of ZAPs in supermarkets, compare this to the prevalence of ZAPs in alcohol stores, and assess the extent to which ZAPs available in supermarkets share branding with alcohol products.

Methods

ZAPs available for sale in large supermarket and alcohol chain stores in Australia were assessed in 2022 and 2024. Analyses examined: (i) ZAPs available in each store type; (ii) alcohol brand extension ZAPs available in supermarkets; (iii) overlap in ZAP brands between supermarkets and alcohol stores; and (iv) changes in (i)–(iii) over time.

Results

The number of unique ZAPs available for sale in supermarkets remained roughly stable between 2022 (n = 70) and 2024 (n = 66). A substantial increase in ZAPs prevalence was observed in alcohol stores (n = 110 in 2022 to n = 261 in 2024). By 2024, ZAPs with alcohol brands dominated supermarkets, representing 59% of available ZAPs, up from 37% in 2022. The percentage of unique ZAPs that were available in both supermarkets and alcohol stores remained stable over the period at 18%.

Discussion and Conclusions

The new dominance of alcohol branded ZAPs in supermarkets demonstrates how alcohol branding is increasingly permeating the supermarket environment in Australia. The resulting increased exposure of children and adolescents to alcohol-related stimuli should be considered in ZAPs policies to minimise adverse outcomes.
