ABSTRACT

Objective

Time in childhood spent living apart from a biological parent or with a repartnered parent is theorized to disrupt norms of intergenerational solidarity and reduce transfers from adult children to parents. Parents’ partnership status when children are grown is also expected to influence children’s transfers. We estimate the probability of a past-year child-to-parent transfer as a function of childhood family structure and parents’ current partnership status.

Background

Changes in family structure across the life course are common and can have lasting effects on parent–child relationships. Prior research has focused on static measures of childhood family structure or focused only on parents’ later-life partnerships.

Method

We use dynamic measures of biological parents’ partnership status and coresidence with children from birth to age 17 and parents’ current partnership status to estimate the probability that a child transferred time or money to that parent in the last year (N = 8840 parent–child dyads). Data are from the 1968–2013 US Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), including the 2013 Rosters and Transfers module.

Results

Adult children are most likely to make transfers to a parent who is currently partnered with their other biological parent and are more likely to support a currently unpartnered or repartnered mother than a father in the same status. Time in childhood spent living with a parent positively predicts adult children’s transfers to that parent.

Conclusion

Past and current family arrangements each contribute to adult children’s likelihood of providing time or money to parents, especially for fathers.

ABSTRACT

Background

Although research has identified that the transition to adulthood for young persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities is not linear, little is known about how young persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, parents, and teachers conceptualise transition, particularly successful transition. The focus of this paper is on how the different stakeholders conceptualised transition and what constitutes successful transition, in general, and for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Method

Thematic analysis was applied to 8 focus groups with 84 participants, exploring transition and successful transition in the Czech Republic.

Results

Five themes emerged, including gaining independence, having a job and opportunities as everybody else, satisfaction with life, and transition of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities as an important issue which needs to be addressed.

Conclusions

ABSTRACT

Previous research consistently highlights a positive relationship between pro-sociality and well-being, often mediated by autonomy. However, limited attention has been paid to exploring the temporal dynamics of this relationship across age cohorts and historical periods. This study conducts a cross-sectional cohort analysis using global data from the World Values Survey (N = 360,244; 109 countries) to examine age and period effects across adulthood. The findings indicate that: (1) Pro-sociality, autonomy, and well-being generally decline with age, but tend to increase across more recent time periods. (2) The positive link between pro-sociality and well-being is stronger among older adults compared to younger adults, and was stronger in earlier periods compared to more recent times. (3) The mediating role of autonomy increases with age across different periods, but decreases across successive time periods when examined chronologically. The results underscore the importance of autonomy for older adults and reveal a declining contextual role of autonomy over time in the relationship between pro-sociality and well-being. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Apr 30th 2026, 11:15

Background

Childhood adversity is widespread globally and is one of the strongest predictors of later psychopathology. However, the differential effects of type and timing of childhood adversities on childhood psychopathology remain unclear, highlighting the need to explore which life-course hypotheses (sensitive periods, accumulation of exposure, and/or recency of exposure) best explain these associations. Of particular importance, there is a lack of research in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), where children experience higher rates of adversity relative to children in high-income countries (HIC).

Methods

Participants included 787 children and their mothers from a South African birth cohort, the Drakenstein Child Health Study. Mothers reported child exposure to adversity from birth to 8 years of age across six adversity categories. We used the two-stage Structured Life-Course Modeling Approach (SLCMA) to examine life-course associations between childhood adversity exposures and internalizing/externalizing symptoms measured using the Child Behavior Checklist at age 8 years.

Results

Maternal psychopathology, maternal adverse events, child food insecurity, and child exposure to community/domestic violence had the strongest associations with child psychopathology symptoms, with varying life-course models selected. The accumulation hypothesis best explained associations of maternal adverse events (partial R
2 = 2.3%) and child exposure to community/domestic violence (partial R
2 = 1.6%) with internalizing symptoms. The combined middle childhood sensitive period (age > 5–8) and recency hypotheses model best explained associations between maternal psychopathology and internalizing (partial R
2 = 7.0%) or externalizing (partial R
2 = 5.1%) symptoms.

Conclusions

We identified that different types and timing of childhood adversity confer differential risk for childhood psychopathology symptoms in this LMIC sample. Our work has implications for strategically-timed intervention and prevention strategies to improve mental health, which may need to be specifically designed for children in LMIC.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have shown that conspiracy beliefs relate to interpersonal trust, loneliness and social exclusion. Although these studies have examined relationships between variables using various research designs—some cross-sectional, others longitudinal and some experimental—the temporal ordering of these relationships is not yet well understood. To address this, we conducted a two-wave longitudinal study measuring COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs, interpersonal trust, loneliness and social exclusion and applied cross-lagged panel model analysis (N = 1218). Results reveal that COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs and interpersonal trust predict each other longitudinally, but after accounting for these relationships, there are no longitudinal relationships between COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs and loneliness or social exclusion. The results indicate that interpersonal trust might play a mediating role in the relationship between COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs and both loneliness and social exclusion, but more research is needed to examine it. Nevertheless, the findings of the present study extend our knowledge of how conspiracy beliefs might be temporally related to social connection variables. Please refer to the Supporting Information section to find this article’s community and social impact statement.

ABSTRACT

Background

The world and mental health nursing face several crises that, in different ways, reflect problems of dominance. Global politics are afflicted with a growth of support for right-wing ideologies associated with domineering authoritarian leaders. Mental health services are dominated by a singular application of bio-psychiatric ideas and practices. Both forms of dominance are potentially alienating and harmful.

Argument

Psychosocial theories offer ways to make sense of authoritarian tendencies across both realms and point to how dominance can be resisted towards progressive transformation. Authoritarian right-wing politics arguably pose an existential threat to society, which is implicated in growing mental distress at the population level and damages services by squeezing resources. Dominant bio-psychiatry visits epistemic and material harms upon the mentally distressed and restricts choice over care and support. Nurses operate at the relational and political nexus of these harms, so must be able to make sense of generative factors and be active in providing remedies.

Conclusions

Applying psychosocial theory can raise political consciousness for mental health nurses and support development of a new politicised professional identity. Advocacy and activist-oriented nurses can mitigate harms across societal and practice-level political engagement. We can, and arguably must, be part of resistance movements grounded in a relational ethic of care.

Abstract

Objective

This study aimed to culturally adapt and validate the Revised Picnic Assessment Scale (Re-PAS) in the Chilean context.

Background

The Re-PAS is a coding system for the Picnic Game (PNG), an observational tool designed to evaluate family interactions, including coparenting dynamics and the overall quality of interactions.

Method

Following translation and cultural adaptation, the tool was applied to a nonclinical sample of 91 families with children aged 36–59 months. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to test the theoretical structure of the scale.

Results

CFA supported the theoretical structure of the scale, demonstrating its validity and reliability for Spanish-speaking families.

Conclusion

The findings highlight the Re-PAS as a robust tool for assessing family dynamics in both clinical and research contexts.

Implications or Recommendations

The Re-PAS offers potential applications in early childhood development and public policy, providing a reliable instrument for evaluating family interactions and coparenting.
