Northwell Health developed what it calls a “first-of-its-kind” digital toolkit aimed at helping healthcare providers implement gun violence prevention programs across clinical settings.

The new digital toolkit serves as a practical guide for health systems to adapt, implement and scale strategies on system, community, clinical and organization levels. It summarizes nearly 100 strategies, the health system said.

The guide, developed by Northwell with support from the Joyce Foundation, is “intentionally modular” to show health systems where they can have the greatest impact and how “to build a balanced portfolio of interventions over time.”

“At the time of writing this toolkit, firearm injury and death rates are declining,” the guide says. “This progress matters. It demonstrates that prevention strategies are working, and that healthcare had a meaningful and growing role to play. Now is the time to accelerate adoption, share lessons learned and expand implementation across hospitals and health systems nationwide.”

More than 44,000 people in the U.S. were killed by a firearm in 2024, an average of 122 deaths per day, the toolkit notes, citing U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wonder data. And, firearm deaths remain the leading cause of death among children and teens in America.

The New York City-based health system has taken a leading stance in gun violence prevention efforts, establishing its Center for Gun Violence Prevention in 2019 and holding annual forums on prevention efforts for the last seven years.

During the system’s most recent forum, held in early March, speakers emphasized the importance of partnership and data collection in prevention efforts.

"Gun violence is a public health crisis that demands action from all of us—and health care has a unique responsibility and platform to lead," said John D’Angelo, M.D., Northwell Health president and CEO, in a statement. "Thanks to Northwell’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention team and support from the Joyce Foundation, we’re able to equip and empower every hospital and health system to meaningfully address this crisis in their communities."
