ABSTRACT

In the face of growing labor market instability driven by technological disruption, economic volatility and public health crises, job loss has become an increasingly common and deeply disruptive experience, especially for young adults at the beginning of their careers. This qualitative study investigates how members of Generation Z in Vietnam rebuild motivation and develop antifragility following involuntary job loss. Drawing on interviews and focus group discussions with 37 participants, the findings reveal a three-stage process: (1) emotional disorientation and identity disruption; (2) reactivation of intrinsic motivation through self-directed actions; and (3) the emergence of antifragility—marked by proactive adaptation, flexible career reinvention and a redefinition of success. Rather than a fixed trait, antifragility is conceptualized as a psychological capacity that develops when individuals gradually restore autonomy, competence and social connection. The study expands existing theories of career adaptation by showing how intrinsic motivation drives growth beyond resilience in response to adversity. It also highlights the urgent need for policies and support systems that go beyond reemployment to promote psychological renewal and sustainable career development in uncertain times.

Abstract

Feedback giving is important for individual performance and creativity. However, obtaining high-quality feedback can be challenging. We argue that considering feedback giving from a relationship perspective can help clarify this phenomenon. In this research, based on social exchange theory, we investigated how the social relationships between feedback seekers and feedback providers influence feedback giving. Through a recall-based experiment, a scenario-based experiment, and a multiwave field survey, we found that feedback providers’ relative status positively influenced their high-quality feedback provision, and tie strength negatively moderated this relationship. Furthermore, we discovered that the joint effect of relative status and tie strength was mediated by perceived psychological safety. The research findings provide valuable insights into how the relationship between feedback providers and seekers influences high-quality feedback provision.

ABSTRACT

The clinical utility of the DSM-5’s Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) depends on how well it encodes diagnostic concepts recognized in clinical descriptions of PDs. The present study examined the AMPD’s coverage of borderline personality features identified in the clinical literature. In three independent samples (total N = 1166), community adults and university students rated their borderline features, level of personality functioning (AMPD Criterion A), and maladaptive personality traits (AMPD Criterion B). We observed that, collectively, the AMPD dimensions accounted for 76%–82% of borderline PD variance across samples. In supplemental analyses that adjusted for measurement error, the variance-explained range climbed to 84%–96%. Some domains of borderline pathology were better represented than others in the AMPD, highlighting areas for improvement in future iterations of the AMPD and related dimensional nosologies. We conclude that, at least in the populations studied here, the AMPD is a serviceable model of longstanding borderline constructs, providing a bridge from categorical to dimensional conceptualizations of borderline PD.

ABSTRACT

Governments in many democratic countries have the mandate to require local authorities to address failures in the management and performance of the public services that they provide. Such policies often involve the takeover of authorities to implement improvements assumed to result in organizational turnaround. However, critics argue that locally-directed change remains a more reliable means for achieving service transformation. To cast light on these issues, this paper applies a quasi-experimental synthetic difference-in-differences approach to investigate whether partial takeovers of poorly-performing education services in four Welsh local authorities in 2013 were effective in turning them around. The findings suggest that the establishment of independent recovery boards to oversee local education policy helped some of them to improve educational outcomes, but that local authorities were not always able to sustain improvements after the recovery boards were decommissioned. The study highlights that government interventions to improve local public service performance need to be focused on supporting long-term organizational change.

ABSTRACT

Grounded in the sustainable career framework and career construction theory, this study examines how career adaptability supports emerging adults’ perceptions of sustainable careers. We investigated whether distinct profiles combining adaptability resources and sustainable career beliefs could be identified and whether these profiles differed in subjective well-being. A sample of Italian university students (N = 169) completed measures of career adaptability, sustainable career perceptions and well-being. Latent profile analysis identified three profiles that varied in levels and configurations of adaptability and sustainability. We then examined whether these profiles differed in life satisfaction and flourishing. The vulnerable profile showed low adaptability and sustainability across all dimensions. The emerging but unbalanced profile displayed moderate adaptability and sustainability but lower control and happiness. The adaptive and sustainable profile showed consistently high levels of both adaptability resources and sustainability domains. Young adults in this last profile reported the highest well-being, whereas those in the vulnerable profile reported the lowest levels of life satisfaction and flourishing. Overall, the findings underscore the role of adaptability as a foundation for sustainable career development and well-being in young adulthood. The results integrate adaptability and sustainability perspectives and offer practical implications for career counselling interventions aimed at strengthening adaptive resources.

ABSTRACT

Objectives

This study examined links among parents’ self-compassion, child-related difficulties, and household chaos in families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children.

Background

Chaotic environments are linked to adverse child outcomes, but parents’ self-compassion may mitigate these effects. Prior research suggests that parents of children with ASD may experience more chaos and less self-compassion, raising questions about how these associations differ from TD families.

Methods

A total of 242 parents (106 with ASD children, 136 with TD children) completed online self-report measures. Mediation and moderation analyses were performed using PROCESS.

Results

In both groups, child-related difficulties mediated the association between parents’ self-compassion and household chaos: greater self-compassion related to fewer child difficulties and less chaos. Parents of ASD children reported more child difficulties and household chaos, although self-compassion levels did not differ. Importantly, among TD families, but not ASD families, child difficulties moderated the link between parent self-compassion and chaos.

Conclusion

Findings highlight the value of fostering parents’ self-compassion to better manage child challenges and reduce chaos. Further research is needed to identify additional resources to assist families of children with ASD.

Implications

Tailored interventions are needed to address the unique challenges facing families of children with ASD.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Around one to two in five patients prematurely disengage from eating disorder therapy. This Forum paper suggests innovative strategies to increase retention and strategies for evaluating these with patients who have eating disorders.

Method

We start by clarifying the definition of premature discontinuation and note one obstacle in the field is a lack of routine and uniform reporting across treatment studies and clinical practice. We then examine common reasons for discontinuation, suggest evidence-informed strategies to improve retention, and ways to evaluate the success of these strategies.

Results

We outline seven underutilized solutions for decreasing risk of premature discontinuation, including: offering low resource interventions while patients are on the waitlist; integrated multidisciplinary care; recovery-oriented treatment augmentation; treatment choice; session measures accompanied by feedback; personalized treatment; paying attention to the relational aspects of treatment.

Discussion

While each of these solutions is evidence-informed, they are rarely the focus of research in eating disorders, and we outline a research agenda for examining which of these approaches have the most promise in improving retention of patients in therapy.
