ABSTRACT

Objectives

To estimate the prevalence of extreme behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in hospitalised patients in comparison with people with dementia with a long hospital stay but no mental health and behavioural problems related to dementia.

Design

Retrospective analysis using the Admitted Patient Data Collection for people aged ≥ 50 with a diagnosis of dementia who had a long stay (defined as ≥ 42 days) in a public hospital between January 2015 and December 2019.

Setting

New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

Participants

People with dementia aged ≥ 50 years with long stays in NSW hospitals.

Measurements

Characteristics of behaviour-related long stays (BRLS) and non-behaviour-related long stays (NBRLS) cohorts were compared using Welch’s t-test and Fisher’s exact test.

Results

There were 115 people with dementia who had 120 BRLS (range 42–2043 days, median 86 days, IQR 53–151 days) and 6186 people with dementia who had 7523 NBRLS (range 42–5750 days, median 61 days, IQR 49–84 days). Those in the BRLS cohort were younger by a mean of 5.96 years (p < 0.001; Welch’s t-test, 95% CI 4.18–7.74) and more likely to be men (0.0062, p < 0.001, Fisher’s exact test). BRLS occurred predominantly in non-psychiatric public hospitals (92.4%). People with BRLS were more likely to have mental health comorbidities (n = 65, 56.5%) than people with NBRLS (2011, 32.7%).

Conclusions

BRLS in people with dementia are less common than NBRLS and are more likely to occur in the context of mental health comorbidities and in younger males.

ABSTRACT

Mental disorders affect not only mothers themselves but also their children and partners. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) in particular is thought to impact the mother–child relationship, but comparisons with mothers with other mental disorders are scarce. Many studies use questionnaires without examining if self-report corresponds to observable behaviour. We assessed the perceived mother–child relationship using the Parenting Relationship Questionnaire and the Child Relationship Behaviour Inventory in three groups: (1) mothers with BPD, (2) mothers with anxiety and/or depression and (3) mothers without mental disorders with preschool children. Additionally, mother–child interactions during free-play and structured tasks were video-recorded and coded using the Coding Interactive Behaviour system. Compared with mothers without mental disorders, both clinical groups perceived their relationship with the child, their own parenting skills and their children’s behaviour as less positive. Mothers with BPD felt less confident and more frustrated than those with anxiety and/or depression. No significant group differences emerged in observed behaviour (e.g., sensitivity, intrusiveness), and correlations between self-report and observation were low. Overall, mothers with BPD face similar challenges as mothers with anxiety or depressive disorders, but they experience particular distress when it comes to relating to and controlling their child’s affect. While mothers in both clinical groups are able to foster positive relationships with their children in a controlled laboratory setting, they find it difficult to maintain these skills permanently (e.g., during negative child affect).

Abstract

The 2024 U.S. Presidential election highlighted Latine voters’ increasingly pivotal role in American politics, as their record-high support for Republican candidates helped Donald Trump clinch the presidency. While many observers were surprised by this development, a historical look at Latines’ complex and shifting political allegiances exposes motivational processes amenable to social-psychological analysis. Using two samples of U.S. Latines, we argue that their political behavior is traceable, in part, to differences in racial phenotypicality (i.e., the tendency to be perceived as “White” vs. “non-White”) and desires for individual-level power. Racial phenotypicality is theorized to influence the plausibility, and power motives the desirability, of psychological ties to the hegemonic national (i.e., American) group. Latines’ prioritization of national over ethnic identity, in turn, acts as a proximal determinant of pro-Republican political affinities. In Study 1 (N = 3753), greater physical resemblance to a prototypical (White, non-Hispanic) American indirectly predicted affinity for Republicans in 2020 via increased feelings of inclusion in U.S. society and prioritization of American over Latine identity. In Study 2 (N = 493), White racial phenotypicality heightened the link between power motives and positive attachment to Americanness, amplifying support for Republicans in 2024.

Public Significance Statement

Two studies showed that differences in Latines’ racial phenotypicality and power desires predict stronger American (vs. Latine) group identification, which in turn predicted greater support for Republicans in the 2020 and 2024 U.S. elections. This work highlights how the racial and psychological diversity within this ethnic group shapes Latines’ social identities in politically consequential ways.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims

Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in research is crucial for producing knowledge that is meaningful to the participating community. Sharing PPIE principles into practical tools and strategies enriches the development of participatory research methodologies. This article describes the co-creation process of ProSafe, a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project conducted in Italy, which explores community perspectives on the reorganization of territorial healthcare toward proximity care. The aims are: (1) to describe the co-creation process, (2) to examine its successes and challenges, and (3) to propose strategies and practical recommendations for fostering partnerships and engagement throughout all research stages.

Methods

The project is based on an explanatory sequential mixed-method design. A Patient Safety Council (PSC) acted as a co-researcher. The five-level spectrum of public engagement developed by the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) guided the analysis of the decision-making power balance between academics and the PSC at each phase. Emphasis was given to the process of survey co-creation. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis was performed to identify strategies and practical recommendations to strengthen engagement.

Results

The SWOT analysis results informed the development of OPERA-PACT (Opening a Participatory and Equitable Research Agreement based on Partnership, Awareness, Collaboration, and Trust), a framework co-created with the PSC to formalize shared principles, values, and attitudes that sustain collaborative partnerships. The framework also includes a commitment to continuous monitoring, verification, and feedback to reinforce partnership over time.

Conclusions

All instruments, strategies, and methodological insights proposed in the article may serve as practical support tools to strengthen the voice of communities in research and to contribute to the production of valid and translational results. Implementing the OPERA-PACT framework may further help align team members with PPIE principles and lay the foundation for effective and sustainable collaboration.

ABSTRACT

The current study aims to examine whether family functioning would moderate the indirect effect of general psychological distress on suicidality through perceived burdensomeness (PB) and thwarted belongingness (TB). A total of 552 Chinese university students (69% female; age: M = 20.95, SD = 1.15) participated in this two-wave longitudinal study conducted from October 2023 to April 2024. Structural equation modeling analyses were conducted to examine the hypothesized models. After controlling for initial suicidality and gender, initial general psychological distress was positively associated with suicidality 6 months later. PB at Time 2 fully mediated the adverse impact of general psychological distress at Time 1 on suicidality at Time 2. In addition, family functioning at Time 1 was found to mitigate the effect of general psychological distress at Time 1 on PB at Time 2, and alleviate the indirect effect of general psychological distress at Time 1 on suicidality at Time 2 through PB at Time 2. PB emerges as a key mechanism underlying the detrimental effects of general psychological distress on suicidality. Moreover, family functioning plays a significant role in alleviating the negative impact of general psychological distress on suicidality through PB. These findings imply that mental health professionals working with university students should seek to reduce perceived burdensomeness and improve family functioning to mitigate the effect of general psychological distress on suicidality.

ABSTRACT

This article explores how youth workers provide initial mental health support (IMHS) to young people in selected local authorities across Scotland and England. In the context of rising youth mental health needs and overstretched mental health services, youth workers are increasingly called upon for support. Drawing on qualitative research with 10 youth workers, this article identifies both the distinctive contribution that youth work makes to mental health support, and the challenges of operating at the forefront while remaining peripheral to statutory systems. It contributes new empirical insight into youth workers’ expanding role within mental health support systems, and the implications of this shift for youth work practice. The findings are organised into six thematic areas: relational practice as a distinctive support model; young person-led and flexible delivery; mental health training; signposting and referral; ‘holding’ young people amid systemic gaps, and supervision, support, and the strain of mental health work. The analysis highlights how youth workers provide trusted, accessible, and non-clinical mental health support, grounded in youth work’s relational ethos, voluntary principle, and flexibility. However, it also reveals ethical and structural tensions as youth workers provide support without adequate training, supervision, and funding. The article concludes that while youth work fills a critical gap in IMHS, this contribution is at risk unless long-term investment, professional recognition, and infrastructural support are put in place to safeguard the relational foundations of youth work.

Background

Altered social cognition in autism may be influenced by difficulties in domain-general functions, such as selective attention. Here, we manipulated the requirement for selective attention during a visual perspective taking (VPT) task and used neurophysiological indices to delineate underlying mechanisms.

Methods

43 autistic and 38 neurotypical children and youth completed a VPT paradigm. Participants’ and an avatar’s perspectives were either congruent or incongruent, manipulating the demand for selective attention to inhibit irrelevant information processing. Group differences in dependence on the attended perspective and congruency were examined for behavioral performance, event-related potentials (ERPs), and in a subsample, stimulus-evoked pupil response (SEPR).

Results

Autistic participants showed reduced accuracy when rating an avatar’s perspective and pronounced perspective-related differences in a late-frontal slow wave (LFSW). Incongruency elicited stronger effects on behavioral performance and LFSW in autistic relative to neurotypical participants. Additionally, generally larger and more sustained SEPR was observed for autistic participants, reflecting an alteration that was dissociable from LFSW differences. Across groups, SEPR and ERP measures explained both distinct and partially overlapping variance in response slowing.

Conclusions

Findings support attenuated VPT abilities and difficulties to deploy selective attention in autistic youth. Altered fronto-cortical activation patterns in the LFSW likely reflect an increased top-down involvement in VPT. Concurrently, pupil responses indicate an increased cognitive effort when reporting visual perspectives. Findings emphasize a co-characterization of social cognition difficulties by social and domain-general functions in autism.

ABSTRACT

Objective

This study employs a grounded theory approach to explore the experience of family estrangement among adult children of China’s Gen Z, aiming to uncover its underlying mechanisms and dynamic characteristics.

Background

Despite its increasing prevalence, family estrangement remains insufficiently theorized and measured, particularly among China’s Gen Z, whose distinct experiences call for culturally sensitive frameworks and tools.

Method

Using questionnaire screening, 60 Gen Z participants from different Chinese areas were selected for in-depth interviews designed to explore the causes and manifestations of family estrangement.

Results

Analysis identified six key dimensions of estrangement: (a) communication quality, (b) communication frequency, (c) physical and psychological distance, (d) negative events, (e) role reciprocity, and (f) support from other family members. On the basis of these findings, the study proposes a conceptual framework to assess the severity of estrangement.

Conclusion

The findings suggest that family estrangement among China’s Gen Z adult children is not a monolithic or linear phenomenon but rather a complex construct characterized by internal contradictions and multiple facets.

Implications

This study contributes theoretical foundation for enhancing the understanding of family estrangement among Gen Z adult children. It also offers a multidimensional structure for assessing estrangement, thereby providing evidence-based support for interventions aimed at fostering healthier and more positive family relationships.
