ABSTRACT

The purpose of this mixed methods study is to explore the impact of a culturally adapted parent-directed training program in the United States on 90 Latine parents’ perceptions of their child’s strengths and social functioning. In addition, the study aimed to investigate the impact of the program on Latine parents’ stress and their empowerment to advocate for their children. Participants were 90 Latine parents who participated in a 10-session culturally adapted training program. Quantitative analyses of pre-post data on the Family-Outcome Survey-Revised Scale, the stress subscale of the DASS-21, and Quality of Play Questionnaire indicated statistically significant improvements. Estimates of effect size and clinical significance were also measured. Analyses indicated clinically significant changes for some Latine parents. Approximately 1 out of 4 Latine parents reported clinically significant improvements (i.e., meaningful improvement) or improvements without clinical significance as related to advocacy for their child’s rights, and 1 out of 3 Latine parents reported clinically significant improvements or slight improvements in understanding their child’s strengths. Approximately 1 out of 3 Latine parents reported clinically significant improvements or slight improvements in reducing their stress symptoms, and approximately 1 out of 3 parents reported clinically significant improvements or slight improvements in their child’s social functioning. Our qualitative findings also revealed that participants (a) appreciated the role of parent leaders, (b) applied evidence-based strategies to help their children, and (c) connected with other parents to create a community. An implication for this study is that graduate programs need to continue to teach future practitioners how to engage in interdisciplinary and interprofessional work to provide effective services to culturally diverse populations.

ABSTRACT

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for shaping habits, behaviors, and identities, and parents play a vital role for positive development in these years. Positive parenting during these years leads to long-term benefits, ultimately promoting healthier societies. Refugee youth face heightened risks of negative emotional, social, and mental health outcomes due to the adversities in refugee contexts. Supporting refugee parents through targeted interventions can mitigate these risks, empowering youth to become resilient adults and contributing members of their communities. This paper examines the factors that would promote the effectiveness of parenting interventions in refugee contexts and suggests future directions for parenting interventions. Since parenting in refugee camps is uniquely challenging, comprehensive support systems to help parents is required. Research highlights the importance of comprehensive parenting programs that enhance knowledge, skills, cognitions, and mental health of parents. Group-based and longer-term interventions are suggested to be particularly effective, fostering lasting social support networks. Effective parenting interventions must also address basic needs including nutrition, safety, and financial security to create the stability necessary for positive parenting practices. Despite these promising outcomes, more research is needed to assess the cultural relevance and long-term effectiveness of these programs, especially in refugee camp settings. Moreover, potential new venues like intervening on promoting post-traumatic growth within different refugee settings as well as using digital tools to establish and sustain parenting intervention programs shall be examined. This paper provides potential new venues for research and interventions in refugee contexts.

ABSTRACT

Objective

To assess changes in publicly reported, potentially avoidable hospital visits after chemotherapy since the introduction of a Medicare quality measure.

Study Setting and Design

Retrospective analysis of avoidable emergency department (ED) and inpatient admission (ADM) rates after chemotherapy between 2018 and 2022, across absolute visit rates and relative hospital performance (“better than”, “no different than”, “worse than” the national rate). We stratified hospitals into quartiles of visit rates in 2018 and used this to model the change in visit rates from 2018 to 2022 with generalized linear regression.

Data Sources and Analytic Sample

A longitudinal cohort of hospitals from the Medicare Outpatient Quality Reporting Program.

Principal Findings

We analyzed 1179 hospitals (94.3% non-profit, 22.9% teaching). National avoidable ED visit rates were 6.0% in 2018, 5.4% in 2022; ADM rates were 12.5% in 2018, 10.3% in 2022. Nearly all hospitals were deemed to have performed “no different” than the national rate each year in ED (≥ 95.3%) and ADM (≥ 91.1%). In adjusted analyses, visit rates for hospitals in the lowest 2018 visit rate quartiles declined the least by 2022 (ED: −0.44% 95% CI: −0.58 to −2.94; ADM: −0.91%, 95% CI: −1.14 to −0.69), and declined the most for hospitals in the highest 2018 quartiles (ED: −1.72%, 95% CI: −1.85 to −7.73; ADM: −3.03%, 95% CI: −3.27 to −2.81). We estimated that the tendency for extreme baseline values to approach the average over time accounted for up to one-tenth of the decline among the worst-performing 2018 quartiles (ED: 10.6% of rate change, 95% CI: 9.8 to 11.5; ADM: 9.0%, 95% CI: 8.2 to 9.8).

Conclusion

Hospitals reduced their potentially avoidable hospital visit rates, though Medicare deemed that nearly all hospitals performed “no different” than the national average each year. It remains unclear if the reductions were driven by this quality measure.

As demonstrated through the graphical abstract, this systematic review provides insight into schoo-based online safety interventions and the components that make these interventions effective. There was a specific focus on digital resilience and how this was identified in each intervention.

Abstract

This systematic review investigates the novel concept of digital resilience, how school-based interventions address this and the extent to which they are effective. Four databases were searched and 15 interventions meeting the inclusion criteria were identified. Quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, study data were extracted, and behaviour change techniques were coded. Recognition of online risks was taught effectively across most interventions and management of online risks had some coverage which was mostly effective. However, few interventions included the teaching of recovery from online risks, and this was rarely assessed as an outcome measure. Therefore, future interventions and curricula should aim to have a greater focus on digital resilience in its entirety in which children can recognize and manage online risks and go on to recover following exposure to online risks.

Abstract

School attendance and absenteeism are critical targets of educational and health-based policies and practices that often depend heavily on attendance/absenteeism and related construct data. At the same time, the quality of school attendance/absenteeism and related data has come under substantial scrutiny and criticism in recent years, particularly with respect to measurement, utilization, context and interoperability. The development of a common, valid and cost-effective measure of school attendance/absenteeism to address these limitations would thus be desirable. This article initially provides a brief review and critique of contemporary systemic and analytic measurement strategies related to school attendance/absenteeism and related constructs. Issues of comparability and variability across professional disciplines and countries/regions are raised, along with a suggestion for the formulation of a next-generation common assessment measure of school attendance/absenteeism and related constructs that emphasizes accessibility and feasibility. A set of principles and possible domains for next-generation common measurement are then presented. This includes a discussion of dimensionality regarding definition, achievement and engagement, functional impairment, interoperability across multiple sources and agencies, and ease of measurement. Finally, a potential roadmap for item and scale development and evaluation is presented to enhance the utility of a common measure across multiple agencies and areas. The article is not meant to be the final word regarding the measurement of school attendance/absenteeism and related constructs, but rather a potential blueprint for developing a common, brief measure that may be useful and modifiable across multiple agencies, jurisdictions and geographical areas.

Context and implications

Rationale: Recent changes in education present a unique opportunity to critically reflect and explore new approaches to conceptualizing and thus measuring and utilizing school attendance/absenteeism and domain-related data.

Why this matters: School attendance and absenteeism are critical targets of educational and health-based policies and practices that often depend heavily on attendance/absenteeism and related construct data.

Implications for interest-holders: A common measure of school attendance/absenteeism must meet not only psychometric standards but also the additional challenge of acceptability to an enormous group of participants with divergent educational, scientific, legal, economic and political views.

<st>Results</st>

Severe fatigue (FSS ≥5) was reported by 36% at 12 months and 31% at 24 months. A higher proportion of women than men reported severe fatigue at 12 months (p=0.08). The number of acute-phase symptoms was associated with severe fatigue. No association was found between severe fatigue and anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels, demographic variables or reinfection status. The severe fatigue group scored significantly lower on all domains of SF-36.

<st>Conclusion</st>

In this cohort, severe fatigue was common, greatly impacted quality of life and persisted for up to 2 years following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Fatigue severity was associated with symptom burden in the acute phase but not with antibody levels or other demographic variables. These findings underscore the need for long-term follow-up and support for affected individuals.

Abstract

Savoring, a positive psychology intervention, has gained growing attention for its potential to enhance positive emotions and well-being while alleviating negative emotional symptoms such as depression and anxiety. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of savoring interventions on emotional outcomes. Twenty independent RCTs with 4805 participants were included, yielding 45 effect sizes. A three-level random-effects model with robust variance estimation (CR2) was employed to account for statistical dependence among multiple effects within studies. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. All analyses were conducted in R version 4.5.1 using the metafor (v4.8.0) and clubSandwich (v0.6.1) packages, with statistical significance set at α = .05 (two-tailed). The overall pooled effect was significant and of moderate magnitude (g = 0.51, 95% CI [0.26, 0.77], p < .001). For descriptive purposes, category-specific pooled estimates were observed for negative emotional symptoms (g = 0.61, 95% CI [0.31, 0.91], p < .001), negative emotional states (g = 0.33, 95% CI [−0.01, 0.68], p = .056), and positive psychological states (g = 0.50, 95% CI [0.24, 0.75], p < .001); outcome category did not significantly moderate intervention effects. Moderator analyses indicated no statistically significant differences across delivery formats, cultural contexts, or risk of bias levels; control group type did not reach statistical significance as a moderator (Δg = −0.47, p = .068), although point estimates were larger for passive than active controls. Publication bias analyses (Egger’s regression, PET-PEESE, trim-and-fill, and selection models) provided convergent evidence that the observed effects were unlikely to be driven by selective reporting. Savoring interventions demonstrate consistent and meaningful benefits for enhancing positive psychological outcomes and reducing negative emotional symptoms across diverse populations and delivery modes. The findings underscore savoring’s potential as a scalable and culturally adaptable approach to promoting emotional well-being.

Abstract

Grounded in principles of epistemic justice, this article examines the educational impacts of Zambia’s COVID-19 school closures on Indigenous girls in two districts and highlights community-led pathways for resilience. National responses prioritised broadcast and digital delivery but presupposed access to electricity, digital devices and dominant language proficiency—conditions often absent in rural Indigenous households. This mismatch deepened educational exclusion, especially for girls, who faced increased domestic labour, early marriage and isolation. To explore these dynamics, we used a qualitative, participatory and Indigenous research design. Data were generated through twelve family yarning circles with Indigenous children and caregivers across two districts and a Photoyarn activity with twelve adolescent girls. Reflexive thematic analysis was conducted collaboratively with participants. Findings show that school closures disrupted learning, safety and peer connection while reinforcing gendered vulnerabilities and limiting girls’ participation in learning. Yet families and communities mobilised culturally grounded strategies—including intergenerational teaching, peer study groups and shared low-tech resources—to sustain learning and well-being. The study demonstrates how national responses insufficiently addressed Indigenous realities and reframes resilience as culturally situated and collectively enacted. It contributes to debates on decolonising education in emergencies and offers policy directions that integrate broadcast content with local facilitation, protect low-tech learning pathways and co-design supports with Indigenous families and communities.
