Abstract

Adolescence is a period of heightened exposure to both unpleasant and pleasant events, requiring effective emotion regulation. Cognitive reappraisal is particularly beneficial, yet research has typically examined its role either in unpleasant or in pleasant situations, rarely considering both simultaneously within individuals. In this 28-day daily diary study, we investigated whether cognitive reappraisal in unpleasant and pleasant events each uniquely contributes to subjective well-being, and, given cognitive maturation during adolescence, whether these associations become stronger with increasing age. A sample of 122 adolescents (15–19 years; M = 17.01, SD = 1.42) reported their end-of-day subjective well-being and the use of eight cognitive reappraisal strategies for the day’s most unpleasant and most pleasant events. On a within-person level, both types of reappraisal predicted higher subjective well-being, even when simultaneously included in the model. Unexpectedly, these effects did not vary by age. On a between-person level, reappraisal in unpleasant and pleasant events was each associated with higher subjective well-being, but not when analyzed jointly, due to shared variance between both types of reappraisal. The within-person findings highlight that regulating emotions in both unpleasant and pleasant events uniquely contributes to adolescent well-being, emphasizing the importance of context on emotion regulation in adolescents.

Abstract

The integration of generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) in higher education is reshaping student engagement, yet its impact on postgraduate international students remains underexplored. This study examines how generative AI shapes postgraduate international students’ engagement through a psychological needs perspective. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 27 participants, this research explores how generative AI facilitates autonomy, competence and relatedness, shaping engagement across behavioural, cognitive, emotional, social and agentive dimensions. The findings, divided into three main themes—’navigating autonomy and adaptation’, ‘augmented competence and AI-Halo effect’ and ‘fostering relatedness and emotional resilience’—reveal that generative AI enhances self-directed learning, academic confidence and inclusivity, particularly by bridging linguistic and cultural barriers. However, challenges such as over-reliance and ethical uncertainties underscore the need for institutional and external support mechanisms to balance AI-driven engagement. Ultimately, this study advances the digital technology and student engagement literature by exploring the intersection of technology and education and proposes a psychological needs framework of generative AI that offers critical insights into its evolving role in higher education.

Gaining access to evidence-informed treatment for eating disorders (EDs) is challenging, and this creates interest in the possible benefits of self-help treatment methods. We investigated the effectiveness of receiving evidence-informed self-guided psychoeducation, delivered to individuals while on a waitlist for specialised ED care.

Method

While waitlisted for treatment, 62 adults were randomised to one of two 4-week conditions: (a) Weekly psychoeducation related to EDs via email (Experimental condition); or (b) No psychoeducation (Control condition). Participants completed weekly measures of ED attitudes (ED-15), body satisfaction (Body Satisfaction Scale) and motivation to change (Readiness Ruler).

Results

Participants in the experimental condition showed a greater reduction in ED-15 scores after 4 weeks of exposure to the psychoeducational materials compared to control participants. Effect sizes were in the small-to-medium range, with the strongest effects observed among individuals who were engaging in binge/purge behaviours. There were no effects on body satisfaction or motivation to change. Participants reported being reasonably engaged and satisfied with the materials.

Conclusions

Delivering low-intensity self-guided psychoeducation appears to be effective in reducing ED attitudes and preoccupations among people waitlisted for specialised ED services, especially those presenting with bulimic symptoms. However, the intervention seemed not to impact motivation for change.

Trial Registration

The trial was registered retroactively at Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT07319936)

ABSTRACT

Background

The psychosocial needs of survivors of cancer in young adulthood in Switzerland remain poorly understood. With this study, we aimed to (1) describe psychosocial support needs of young adult cancer survivors (YACS) during treatment and survivorship, (2) determine whether these needs change from treatment to survivorship, and (3) identify characteristics associated with unmet needs.

Methods

We included survivors aged 21–39 years at diagnosis, diagnosed at least two years prior to our questionnaire survey. We used descriptive statistics to analyze distributions of psychosocial support needs during treatment and survivorship. McNemar’s tests assessed changes in these needs over time, and logistic regressions identified determinants of unmet needs.

Results

A total of 131 YACS (mean age at study = 37.5 years; 61% female) participated in our study. Most YACS reported that their needs were met in all support domains, both during treatment and survivorship. During treatment, unmet needs were highest for insurance support (n = 30; 23%), support for friends (n = 20; 15%) and family (n = 17; 13%). During survivorship, unmet needs were most pronounced for insurance support (n = 15; 12%), information on cancer and late effects (n = 10; 8%), and work-related support (n = 9; 7%). Intrapersonal needs (e.g., information, psychological), remained stable, while unmet interpersonal (e.g., family, friends), and institutional/systemic (e.g., insurance, work) support needs declined during survivorship. Younger age and shorter time since diagnosis were associated with unmet intrapersonal needs during survivorship, while male sex predicted unmet interpersonal needs during treatment.

Conclusion

Although most support needs are met, targeted efforts are needed to address the remaining unmet needs of Swiss YACS in order to ensure they receive adequate survivorship care.

ABSTRACT

Clinical education requires both conceptual mastery and relational aptitude. Developing therapeutic presence through content mastery alone may fall short because relational skills are learned through attuned relationships. Relational teaching in mental health education espouses the use of the educator–student relationship to foster relational skills. This scoping review implemented a constant comparison method to identify essential components of relational teaching in mental health education between 2003 and 2025 and examine how they work together to promote students’ development. Analysis of 15 articles on relational teaching in mental health education revealed four essential components: role clarity, restoration, reflexive responsivity, and (co)regulation. I organized these findings into a model, The Relational Teaching Clock, which depicts the relationship between these concepts as interdependent, framing (co)regulation as a foundational principle of relational teaching. This model challenges dominant narratives that espouse competition and independent success by inviting educators to facilitate relationships with students that intentionally promote students’ personal healing. The Relational Teaching Clock provides a concise model, based on existing evidence, to guide the development of relational skills necessary for therapeutic relationships.

Emotional similarity—an overlap in emotional experience with other people—fosters a better understanding of others’ emotions and an accurate perception of others’ intentions and motivations. Consequently, it may contribute to improved relations with others as well as one’s well-being. We examined this idea in the context of intergroup relations. We tested whether the higher emotional similarity of immigrants to the majority group is linked to immigrants’ lower prejudice toward host society members, meta-prejudice (i.e., individuals’ perception of what other groups feel about their group), and higher self-categorization (i.e., a process in which people categorize themselves as a part of the outgroup) as well as their higher psychological and relational well-being. To this end, we conducted three correlational studies (NStudy1 = 141; NStudy2 = 150; NStudy3 = 161) using a correlational profile method; and three experimental studies (NStudy4 = 181; NStudy5 = 198; NStudy6 = 95), where we manipulated emotional similarity as a state in real-time by exposing participants to anger-eliciting news stories. In line with our expectations, higher emotional similarity was related to lower meta-prejudice, higher self-categorization, and higher relational and psychological well-being in the correlational studies. We found no support for our hypotheses in the experimental studies.
