ABSTRACT

Heteronormative public administration assumes that LGBTQIA+ communities will reflect their heterosexual counterparts. The resulting deficient outreach to vulnerable communities has worsened health disparities, as seen in the 2022 Mpox epidemic, in which gay and bisexual men experienced the highest infection rates. This research applied queer theory to examine social media efforts to eliminate Mpox spread. This study critically assessed 591 social media messages from influencers, non-profits, and government for queer-focused and heteronormative discourse. Findings revealed that most governmental and non-profit accounts failed to augment content for the at-risk audience. Gay and bisexual men had to navigate heteronormative content to locate resources critical to their well-being. Conversely, influencers acted as a public health system through repeated messaging and by supplementing governmental guidance with steps tailored for a queer audience. Influencers’ value came from leveraging their lived experiences to challenge discriminatory societal norms, highlighting the crucial role of culturally relevant communication.

ABSTRACT

Moral injury (MI) is a proposed syndrome that develops when someone is exposed to, participates in, or fails to prevent an action that fundamentally violates their moral code and results in maladaptive cognitions about oneself and humanity. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder based on maladaptive cognitions that develops following a traumatic event. Decades of PTSD research underscore that the experience of mental defeat, or the perception that one was completely defeated during the traumatic event, plays a significant role in the development and maintenance of PTSD. Less work, however, has been done to develop a cognitive model of MI and to understand how mental defeat plays a role in the underlying maladaptive cognitions. Understanding the cognitive model of MI is key to developing effective cognitive therapy. In this paper, we first examine the role of mental defeat in PTSD cognitive models and then compare the PTSD cognitive model to proposed cognitive models for MI. Based on these comparisons and overlapping symptomology, we suggest that mental defeat plays an important role in MI cognitive models.

ABSTRACT

Objective

This study investigated whether the associations of own and partner intra- and extradyadic stress with relationship satisfaction vary based on both partners’ Big Five personality traits among parents.

Background

Previous research has shown that relationship satisfaction during parenthood often decreases, and increased stress is linked to lower relationship satisfaction; yet these associations differ widely between individuals. Personality traits may explain such individual differences. However, research is scarce on how they interact with intra- and extradyadic stress, especially during critical periods such as parenthood, and how these dynamics affect both parents’ relationship satisfaction.

Method

Using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model, this study examined prospective associations between own and partner intra- and extradyadic stress and relationship satisfaction and whether the Big Five personality traits moderate these associations. Data were drawn from the German cohort study DREAM and included 1961 mothers and 1485 fathers, corresponding to 2021 couples in total, with data from both partners available for 1455 couples.

Results

Higher levels of own and partner intradyadic stress were associated with lower own relationship satisfaction. The negative association between own intradyadic stress and own relationship satisfaction was stronger among more conscientious parents and weaker among parents with more open partners. Likewise, partner intradyadic stress was less strongly associated with lower own relationship satisfaction among more open parents. In contrast, partner extradyadic stress predicted higher own relationship satisfaction only among open parents.

Conclusion

Our results highlight the need to consider both partners’ personalities in parenting stress management interventions as well as the specific contextual factors of stress parents face.

Source: World Food Programme

The first round of cash assistance will support nearly 50,000 conflict-affected families — approximately 183,000 people to help them cover their most urgent needs. Households affected by the crisis who are not yet registered in existing assistance systems will be able to submit their information through a Government-led registration platform, with the link to be shared shortly through official channels.

The system, already in place within the Government and strengthened with WFP’s technical support, allows assistance to reach vulnerable households quickly during times of crisis. The activation of cash assistance is in response to escalating hostilities in Lebanon and will allow families to meet their immediate food needs as they find safety.

Even before the latest escalation, Lebanon was grappling with years of compounding crises, including economic collapse and the lingering impacts of previous conflict. According to the latest food security analysis, 874,000 people were already facing acute food insecurity – a number that was projected to increase, leaving many families highly vulnerable to new shocks.

In parallel with the activation of emergency cash assistance, WFP has been responding to the growing displacement. Within hours of shelters opening, WFP began providing hot meals, ready-to-eat rations and bread, reaching 40,000 people since the escalation started on Monday, in coordination with national authorities and humanitarian partners.

“The latest escalation is unfolding in a context where many families were already living one shock away from deeper hardship,” said Anne Valand, WFP Representative and acting Country Director in Lebanon. “By activating the national social safety net alongside immediate food assistance, we can support families quickly and help them meet their most urgent needs during this difficult time.”

The emergency cash assistance will be delivered through the Government’s existing Shock-Responsive Social Safety Net (SRSN), enabling rapid support to households affected by the escalation.

“With needs rising rapidly and displacement expanding across Lebanon, our priority is to ensure families can meet their most urgent basic needs with speed and dignity. Through the Ministry of Social Affairs, we have activated the Government’s shock-responsive safety net to deliver emergency cash assistance to war-affected households, in close coordination with WFP and national response authorities. This is a government-led response, designed to reach people quickly, transparently, and at scale,” said H.E. Dr. Haneen el Sayyed, Minister of Social Affairs in Lebanon.

WFP continues to coordinate closely with the Government of Lebanon, including the Ministry of Social Affairs and national disaster response authorities to support families affected by the escalation.

WFP has also pre-positioned food stocks in the country and remains ready to scale up assistance as humanitarian needs evolve.

ABSTRACT

Purpose

This study aimed to examine the relationship between primary school students’ levels of privacy awareness and their knowledge of child sexual abuse, with particular attention to demographic and contextual factors including gender, socioeconomic status, and academic achievement.

Methods

A descriptive correlational research design was employed. The sample consisted of primary school students enrolled in public schools in Türkiye during the 2023–2024 academic year. Data were collected using validated measures of privacy awareness and child sexual abuse knowledge. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were conducted to analyse the data.

Findings

The findings indicated that female students and older primary school students demonstrated significantly higher levels of both privacy awareness and knowledge of child sexual abuse. Students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds and those with higher academic achievement also showed greater awareness and knowledge. Overall, privacy awareness and sexual abuse knowledge were found to be at a moderate level but were strongly and positively correlated (r = 0.807, p < 0.01). Regression analysis further revealed that privacy awareness was a significant predictor of children’s knowledge of sexual abuse (β = 0.819, p < 0.01).

Conclusion

The results highlight the critical role of privacy awareness in enhancing children’s protective knowledge against sexual abuse. Integrating systematic privacy education into primary school curricula may serve as an effective preventive strategy to strengthen children’s self-protection skills and overall wellbeing.

ABSTRACT

Background

There is a critical gap between the need for eating disorder (ED) treatment and provider availability. Single-Session Interventions (SSIs) are structured programs intentionally designed for a single client encounter and show promise for filling ED-treatment and prevention gaps by enhancing accessibility of evidence-based intervention. Recent studies have started to examine the efficacy of SSIs for various ED concerns, ranging from prevention to symptom reduction. A robust examination of the efficacy of SSIs in addressing ED concerns is thus needed.

Objective

This review assessed whether, and to what degree, ED SSIs are efficacious. Further, this study examined whether the efficacy of SSIs was moderated by SSI function (i.e., treatment versus prevention), SSI implementation format (i.e., self-guided versus provider delivered), SSI administration method (i.e., remote versus in-person), and follow-up duration after SSI completion.

Method

Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. A multi-level random effects meta-analysis using a restricted maximum likelihood estimator was conducted to synthesize effect sizes from 22 primary studies (k = 331 effect sizes). Multi-level meta-regression was conducted to test moderators of ED SSI efficacy. Findings from non-randomized trial design studies were qualitatively synthesized.

Results

Overall Hedge’s g effect size for efficacy of ED SSIs from 22 studies was significant with a small effect (g = −0.23, 95% CI = −0.40 to −0.05, p < 0.01). There was no heterogeneity between studies (between-study σ
2 = 0.00), but there was high heterogeneity in effect sizes within studies (within-study σ
2 = 2.65). Moderator analyses demonstrated that ED SSIs were significantly efficacious for reducing ED-related symptoms, reducing other mental health concerns, and enhancing quality of life. ED SSI efficacy was significantly different from zero for self-guided SSIs and remotely delivered SSIs. Finally, ED SSIs demonstrated efficacy immediately following intervention completion, and the efficacy did not strengthen or weaken at follow up.

Discussion

Findings supported that SSIs reduced ED concerns, which suggests that SSIs have the potential to reduce the public-health burden of EDs by improving scalability of prevention and treatment.
