<p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>This study investigated the relationship between spirituality and academic performance for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in primary schools in England. OFSTED provided the statistics on spiritual development of 480,309 pupils in 1668 primary schools in England. These data were analysed with measures of academic performance from the Department for Education’s <i>Key Stage 2 – Progress Results</i> (2019). Three regression models determined the extent to which spirituality could predict academic performance. Five educator participants were then interviewed and answered 10 open-ended questions in relation to spirituality and academic performance. These results identified spirituality as a positive predictor of academic performance. The findings support spiritually cultivated components of learning that function to increase academic performance. It is suggested that spirituality can increase the academic performance of some pupils with SEND, though its impact may depend on factors such as type and severity of need, as well as parental and teacher involvement.</p>

<p><h2>ABSTRACT</h2>
<h2>Background</h2>
<p>Women with intellectual disabilities experience disparities in perinatal outcomes and unmet needs in perinatal care. Many women with intellectual disabilities receive support from family caregivers, including accompaniment to healthcare visits. This qualitative study explores the experiences of obstetric care clinicians navigating perinatal care with family caregivers of women with intellectual disabilities.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>Transcripts from interviews (<i>n</i> = 9) and a focus group (<i>n</i> = 8) with 17 obstetric care clinicians were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>Four major themes emerged: (1) determining intellectual disability and guardianship status; (2) decision-making; (3) navigating ethical, legal, relational, and clinical challenges; (4) caregivers as an integral part of perinatal care.</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>Family caregiver involvement in perinatal care of women with intellectual disabilities has benefits but can also present challenges for obstetric care clinicians. Clinicians need guidance on how to appropriately manage perinatal care of women with intellectual disabilities.</p>

<p><h2>ABSTRACT</h2>
<p>Most research on social change investigates the role of identification with a disadvantaged group, perceptions of disadvantage, emotional experiences related to disadvantage and efficacy beliefs in motivating people to challenge the <i>status quo</i> and redress inequalities. However, engaging in such attempts might be costly in precarious contexts, and in such contexts, individuals might pursue alternative pathways to change, including identity management strategies such as individual mobility. The present research investigates how perceived grievances, hope and a personal history of activism influence collective action intentions and alternative identity management strategies, that is, migration tendencies in a context where public participation may be perceived as costly. Using survey data (<i>N</i> = 980) from university students in Iran, we test a moderated mediation model linking grievances and past participation to collective action intentions and migration tendencies through efficacy beliefs, anger and avoidance-oriented negative emotions. Our findings indicate that hope strengthens the indirect link from past participation to collective action intentions via perceived efficacy and avoidance-oriented negative emotions. We also find that when individuals are more hopeful, perceived grievances are also associated with individual mobility attempts via anger. We discuss the implications for research on social change.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><h2>ABSTRACT</h2>
<h2>Objective</h2>
<p>Expand the vision of high-quality sexuality with a measure of sexual flourishing.</p>
<h2>Background</h2>
<p>Research has consistently shown that the quality of a couple’s sexual relationship is an important part of their overall relationship, as sexual interactions are a fundamental part of intimacy. Moving beyond a focus on sexual satisfaction to focus on sexual flourishing, a richer, more holistic concept that includes growth, belonging, meaning, and engagement in sexuality could expand understanding of sexual quality.</p>
<h2>Method</h2>
<p>The Sexual Flourishing Scale (SFS) was developed through two large-scale surveys (Study 1, <i>n</i> = 1479; Study 2, <i>n</i> = 1579) and a daily diary study (Study 3, <i>n</i> = 127). Factor analysis, item response theory, regression, and multilevel path analysis, demonstrated that the SFS is both valid and distinct from traditional measures of sexual satisfaction.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>Those who scored high on the SFS were more likely to see sex as a way to deepen their relationship and were motivated to meet their partner’s sexual needs. In contrast, people who scored high on sexual satisfaction were more likely to view sex primarily as a source of physical pleasure and have more consistent orgasms.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>The SFS can encourage couples, therapists, and educators to adopt a broader perspective on what it means to have a healthy, fulfilling sex life.</p>

<p><p>
<st>Introduction</st>
</p>
<p>In 2006, a federal US court found several major tobacco companies guilty of violating civil racketeering laws for deceiving the public about the harms of cigarettes. After 16 years of legal battles, the court ordered 17 corrective statements to be placed in over 200 000 tobacco retailers who have contracts with the tobacco companies to educate the public on the truth about tobacco-related harms. This study examined if corrective statement compliance was equitable across neighbourhoods.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>We conducted a pooled cross-sectional analysis of compliance audit data collected by a court-approved auditor hired by the tobacco companies (33 977 in-person audits in 29 131 tobacco retailers in all US states). We downloaded census tract-level socio-demographic data from the 2019 to 2023 American Community Survey and fitted multivariable multinomial logistic regression models testing associations between neighbourhood socio-demographic variables and major non-compliance (vs compliance) and minor non-compliance (vs compliance).</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>Overall compliance was 80.4%. Audits indicated retailers located in neighbourhoods with the highest (vs lowest) percentage of Black residents had 2.21 (95% CI 1.94 to 2.52) times the odds of being major non-compliant (vs compliant). Inequities in major and minor non-compliance were also present by percentage of Hispanic/Latine residents and median household income.</p>
<p>
<st>Discussion</st>
</p>
<p>Compliance with the mandated display of corrective statements, which was intended to increase knowledge and educate the public about the harm of cigarettes and the tobacco industry’s deception, was not equitable in this sample. Future policies should include requirements that policy implementation is equitably enforced to ensure all populations realise public health benefits.</p>

<p><p>
<st>Objective</st>
</p>
<p>To estimate the prevalence of US adults’ exposure to point-of-sale corrective statements about the health effects, addictiveness, and deceptive marketing of cigarettes, as well as reactions to these messages.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>We analysed data from the 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey, a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of the US civilian non-institutionalised population aged 18+ (March–September 2024, N=7278). Weighted multivariable logistic regression models estimated associations of tobacco use, sociodemographic characteristics and perceptions of conflicting health recommendations with self-reported exposure and reactions.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>In 2024, 36.5% of US adults reported seeing point-of-sale corrective statements. Individuals who currently smoked (52.9%) were more likely to report exposure compared with those who never (34.7%) or formerly smoked (34.3%). Among those exposed, 53.6% trusted the information, 49.3% supported the court’s mandate, 26.5% thought about friends/family who smoke and 7.9% wanted to look for more information about smoking risks. 41.1% of individuals who currently smoked and saw the statements reported thinking about quitting. Multivariable analyses indicated that those who smoked or used non-cigarette tobacco products were more likely to report exposure and less likely to support the mandate, while individuals who believed that health recommendations often conflict were less likely to trust the information.</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>About one in three US adults—and about half of people who smoke—reported noticing point-of-sale corrective statements in 2024. Although exposure rates were relatively consistent across sociodemographic groups, variations in individual reactions point to a need for strategies that enhance the impact of corrective statements, particularly among those who smoke.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><p>
<st>Objectives</st>
</p>
<p>The demand for point-of-care testing (POCT) increased exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a convenient and accessible method of virus detection outside of traditional laboratory settings. As high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a prominent public health concern, POCT for STI detection may offer an option that reduces key barriers to care such as stigma and limited clinic hours. The aim of this narrative review is to identify key facilitators, barriers and gaps related to the acceptability and implementation of STI POCT from patient perspectives in non-traditional settings.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>To conduct this narrative review, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase and Scopus to identify relevant studies published between 1 January 2015 and May 2025, focusing on patient perspectives and contextual determinants of POCT implementation for <i>Chlamydia trachomatis</i> (CT) and <i>Neisseria gonorrhoeae</i> (NG). Search terms included free-text keywords (such as “point of care”) and indexed terms (such as <i>Point-of-Care Testing</i> (MeSH)). Findings were contextualised based on patient perspective data and implementation into non-traditional settings.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>40 studies were included in the narrative review, reflecting geographical regions where POCT implementation has been prioritised. Study designs and implementation environments varied. POCT for CT/NG screening generally reported high diagnostic accuracy and reliability as well as increased uptake and high acceptability across settings. Availability, perceived convenience and increased autonomy significantly influenced POCT uptake and implementation among patients. Implementation facilitators included ease of device usage, minimal training and improved quality of care. Implementation barriers primarily focused on logistics, workflow and cost.</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Community-engaged approaches to designing and implementing STI POC tests in non-traditional settings are necessary to better understand specific needs. High patient satisfaction, device acceptability and improved health outcomes place STI POCT as a promising avenue for strengthening public health efforts against the STI epidemic.</p>

<p><p>
<st>Introduction</st>
</p>
<p>Functional limitations are a key indicator of ageing, associated with quality of life, independence and the need for caregiving and long-term support. Research shows that formerly incarcerated older adults have more functional limitations than those who have never been incarcerated, yet there is a lack of research on prior incarceration and changes in functional limitations over time.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>Data come from 8377 adults aged ≥55 who participated in the Health and Retirement Study and were followed biennially from 2012 to 2022. Self-reported functional limitations were measured at each wave as a count of nine functional tasks. Group-based trajectory modelling identified subgroups characterised by patterns of functional limitations over time. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate the association between self-reported prior incarceration and trajectory group membership.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>We identified five distinct trajectories of functional limitations: low (23.8%), low-increasing (26.8%), moderate-increasing (24.2%), high-increasing (16.6%), and persistent-high (8.5%). Relative to the consistently low group, formerly incarcerated individuals (v. never incarcerated individuals) had a higher relative risk of membership in the moderate-increasing group (RRR=1.588, 95% CI 1.096 to 2.302), the high-increasing group (RRR=2.122, 95% CI 1.450 to 3.107), and the persistent-high group (RRR=2.181, 95% CI 1.207 to 3.940) after adjusting for covariates.</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>These findings suggest that incarceration may be an important life-course marker of elevated risk for late-life functional limitations and highlight the need for targeted clinical and policy interventions to support functional health among formerly incarcerated older adults.</p>

<p><h2>ABSTRACT</h2>
<h2>Introduction</h2>
<p>Disability is a primary predictor of the need for healthcare and services, yet it is not commonly evaluated.</p>
<h2>Aim</h2>
<p>To analyze the functional disability of children with mental disorders based on gender and diagnosis.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>A cross-sectional study was conducted in two psychiatric hospitals specializing in child and adolescent mental health in Mexico. The “WHODAS 2.0 adapted for children” questionnaire was administered to a total of 397 dyads (<i>n</i> = 794) to measure functioning. T-tests and analysis of variance were used to compare means between groups (sex and diagnosis) and variables within each domain of functioning.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>Girls reported greater global dysfunction compared to boys (girls Ⴟ = 33.72, boys Ⴟ = 30.43, SE = 1.57, <i>p</i> < 0.05), particularly in the domain of mobility. Conversely, boys exhibited greater disability in the domain of life activities (domestic and school). Depressive disorder (DD) was associated with worse functioning in the domains of social participation and interpersonal interactions, whereas hyperactivity disorder (HD) was associated with greater disability in the domain of life activities (domestic).</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>The level of functional disability varies by gender and diagnosis, highlighting the need for tailored interventions based on these perspectives.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><p>
<st>Background:</st>
</p>
<p>Early evidence suggested an increase in child maltreatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We sought to assess changes in the incidence rate of hospital admission for maltreatment among children younger than 2 years during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Methods:</st>
</p>
<p>We conducted a pan-Canadian population-based interrupted time-series analysis from Apr. 3, 2016, to Mar. 25, 2023. We obtained administrative health data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information and the Institut national d’excellence de santé et services sociaux for all Canadian provinces and territories. The primary exposure was the COVID-19 pandemic period compared with the prepandemic period. The primary outcome was hospital admission for child maltreatment, and the secondary outcome was intensive care unit (ICU) admission for the same diagnosis. We compared incidence rates between the prepandemic and COVID-19 pandemic periods.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Results:</st>
</p>
<p>A total of 1518 hospital admissions for maltreatment occurred among children younger than 2 years. We found a 31% reduction in hospital admissions over 16 weeks at the beginning of the pandemic (adjusted rate ratio 0.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.58 to 0.83) and a 56% reduction in ICU admissions (adjusted rate ratio 0.44, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.78). The rate of hospital admission returned to baseline, but the rate of ICU admission increased following the 16-week period of restricted health care access (adjusted rate ratio 1.80, 95% CI 1.23 to 2.63).</p>
<p><br>
<st>Interpretation:</st>
</p>
<p>Initial public health measures and restricted health care access during the pandemic were associated with decreased rates of hospital admission for child maltreatment. We found no sustained reduction in overall hospital admission rates throughout the remaining pandemic period, but admissions to ICU increased. Our findings suggest that public health measures during the pandemic resulted in decreased detection of child maltreatment and possibly increased severity of cases involving hospital admission, suggesting a need for greater attention to identification and treatment of child maltreatment in future pandemic settings.</p>

<p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>The academic experiences at colleges and universities were significantly disrupted by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic with notable impacts on student learning, engagement, and success. We explore its effect on academic performance and student interaction at a mid-sized public institution in the southeastern United States. Data collected from approximately 1500 introductory statistics students between 2019 and 2021 were used to compare student performance before and during the pandemic. During the pandemic, differing modes of instruction were offered, and overall performance on assessments in 2020 and 2021 differed little from performance prior to the pandemic in 2019. However, more absences and academic integrity issues were reported prior to the pandemic. Performance and student interactions varied based on modality, with students meeting face-to-face tending to have better outcomes. Finally, we observe that gender, prior academic performance, and prior course loads were the only academic and demographic descriptors distinguishable between which modalities students opted to attend.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><h2>ABSTRACT</h2>
<h2>Background</h2>
<p>Despite the burden associated with bipolar disorder (BD), research into early diagnosis and treatment of BD lags approximately 20 years behind the field of early intervention for psychosis. This study evolved through a partnership between Orygen (Melbourne, Australia) and the Daymark Foundation (Toronto, Canada). The primary focus was to answer the question: “How might we advance an early intervention approach for people at-risk of or with BD?”.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>Semi-structured interviews were conducted with international experts and other stakeholders in early intervention and BD to identify challenges and barriers in early intervention approaches to BD.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>Twenty-eight experts participated. Nine themes emerged as challenges: (i) limited recognition and understanding of BD across stakeholders; (ii) lack of definitions; (iii) poor resourcing and lack of prioritisation in funding models; (iv) absence of validated tools for diagnosis, monitoring treatment response and/or disorder progression; (v) absence of “big data”; (vi) scarcity of evidence-based treatments and clinical guidelines for the early stages of the disorder; (vii) obscurity around optimal service models; (viii) the need for better support and involvement of families and significant others; and (ix) the need for collaboration (across disciplines, stakeholders, and settings) to progress the field.</p>
<h2>Limitations</h2>
<p>Of those approached, 54.9% participated in the study. Given the qualitative nature of the study, recruiting more experts to the study would not necessarily change the outcomes as data saturation was achieved.</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>This work lays the foundations for developing a collaborative research framework to progress early intervention for young people with BD.</p>
