ABSTRACT

Background

The increasing presence of English-as-an-additional-language counsellor trainees (EAL CTs) in counselling programmes underscores the need for more inclusive and targeted training that addresses their unique developmental and cultural experiences. However, limited empirical research has examined how acculturation processes and mindfulness traits jointly relate to EAL CTs’ professional identity development.

Methods

Using a quantitative mediation design, this study surveyed 168 EAL CTs to examine the relationships among professional identity development, mindfulness traits, and acculturation orientations towards both heritage and mainstream cultures. Mediation analyses were conducted to test whether mindfulness traits mediated the associations between acculturation and professional identity.

Results

Professional identity development was significantly associated with mindfulness traits as well as with both heritage and mainstream acculturation. Furthermore, mindfulness traits significantly mediated the relationships between each form of acculturation and professional identity development.

Conclusion

These findings highlight mindfulness as a key psychological mechanism linking acculturation experiences to professional identity development among EAL CTs. Implications emphasise the integration of mindfulness-based practices into counselling curricula and the intentional affirmation of both heritage and mainstream cultural orientations in the training of EAL CTs.

On Friday, the Senate passed House Bill 490, which would allow public universities to terminate faculty members if a school faces financial trouble, such as budget shortfalls, declining enrollment or academic programs that cost more than they generate…. Currently, state law only allows faculty or presidents to be removed for cause, including incompetency, neglect, refusal to perform their duties, immoral conduct and failing to meet performance and productivity requirements.

ABSTRACT

Broaching is a cognitive willingness or directedness to initiate a conversation on a topic that may be difficult or uneasy to discuss with all parties involved. Within the counseling context, broaching refers to the school counselor’s or helping professional’s effort to initiate or respond to issues related to race, ethnicity, and culture in the counseling process. Further, within the broaching framework, the counseling context is interpreted broadly, but it includes strong awareness and understanding of the dynamic interplay of race, ethnicity, gender, social class status, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, immigration status, ability/disability, and so forth, and how they individually and collectively shape beliefs, practices, value orientations, sociopolitical realities, and positionalities. Given the symbiotic relationship among race, ethnicity, and culture, this article emphasizes the social construction of race and class and how they work together to influence counseling/educational and non-counseling/educational dynamics. Because Black students are disproportionately underrepresented in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, we highlight the effects of race and class in such programs, contributing to Blacks’ underrepresentation. We also include Boykin’s Afro-centric cultural styles framework and Cross’ racial identity theory to illustrate the additional layers to the broaching process.

Today, extraordinary wealth seems to arrive from nowhere. The trick of conjuring this unearned wealth is, in fact, the key to understanding capitalism’s origins and a clue to why the catastrophe of climate collapse is upon us: value is created by consuming the future.

The Alibi of Capital explains how this came about through the imperial expansion of the West, encumbering today’s generations with repayments on earlier extractions. Timothy Mitchell identifies the forms of capitalisation, credit, and coercion that turn prospective assets into present income. Rejecting the common idea that claims on the future create only financial or fictitious capital, he traces the terraforming projects – the destruction of rivers, the colonising of territory, the expansion of infrastructure, and the burning of carbon – through which the future has been squandered. Terms such as finance, technology, the economy, and growth function as alibis that conceal this devastating form of extraction.

In their review article, Developmental Language Disorders: A Hidden Condition with Lifelong Impact, Iverson and Williams (2026) cover all the ground from the importance of language and its infusion across daily tasks to the characteristics, assessment and management of a neurodevelopmental condition known as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The former is an important inclusion to understanding the impact of the latter, and so my commentary discusses both components. The article concludes with major challenges to investigations and support of DLD, which I add to and join in the call to raise awareness of this hidden and lifelong condition.

ABSTRACT

Introduction

Existential distress, depression and loss of meaning are important concerns in psychiatric and mental health nursing. Logotherapy has been applied in nursing to address these issues, but its effectiveness when delivered specifically by nurses has not been systematically synthesised.

Aim/Question

This review evaluated the effectiveness of nurse-delivered logotherapy-based interventions through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods

Ten databases were searched for studies published between 1950 and January 2025. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria: four randomised controlled trials and 15 nonrandomised controlled trials. A meta-analysis of 15 nonrandomised controlled trials examined meaning in life and depression. Methodological rigour was ensured by following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines, registering the protocol with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews and applying Cochrane risk-of-bias tools.

Results

Interventions were typically delivered over one to eight sessions, primarily in group-based formats, and targeted adult populations across diverse clinical and community settings. The meta-analysis demonstrated significant improvements in meaning in life (Hedges’ g = 0.97) and significant reductions in depression (Hedges’ g = 0.79). Larger effect sizes were observed among older participants, while studies with smaller sample sizes tended to report greater effects.

Discussion

These findings suggest that nurse-delivered logotherapy-based interventions may represent a clinically applicable approach to addressing meaning-related outcomes alongside depressive symptoms in psychiatric and community nursing.

Limitations

Few randomised trials, methodological heterogeneity and the predominance of studies from Korea may limit generalisability.

Implications for Practice

Nurse-delivered logotherapy-based interventions provide a structured, evidence-based approach to existential and spiritual care in psychiatric and community nursing.

Recommendations

Future research should employ rigorous randomised designs and assess long-term outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Research inspired by the social identity theory of leadership has focused predominantly on the importance of a leader being seen to be representative of the groups they lead. However, beyond this, research suggests that leaders also need to create, advance, and embed a sense of shared social identity in those groups. In the present research, we explore how these different facets of identity leadership combine to form distinct leader profiles. We draw on two heterogeneous independent samples from the Global Identity Leadership Development project (N = 7682; N = 7855) to explore profiles of leaders’ engagement in identity leadership. In both studies, a latent profile analysis of the results of a CFA using a bifactor-(S − 1) model was conducted. In each case, the analysis identified two different predominant identity leadership profiles: ‘engaged identity leaders’ and ‘moderate-inconsistent identity leaders’. Employees working with engaged identity leaders reported substantially more positive job-related attitudes. The results were very similar across the two studies and suggest that this profile analysis is generalizable. The findings support suggestions that identity leadership is multidimensional rather than solely a matter of identity prototypicality.
