ABSTRACT

Previous research has shown that behavioral skills training is effective for training caregivers to implement behavior-analytic feeding interventions with high integrity. However, less is known about the generality of caregiver treatment integrity outside of the training context. Caregivers may experience challenges with generalizing their skills to the home as the training context (e.g., clinic) may not include stimuli necessary for caregiver skill generalization. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to evaluate caregiver integrity in the presence of mealtime barriers relevant to the home mealtime setting (e.g., eating while implementing treatment, attending to siblings during meals) and train caregivers to implement interventions with high integrity in the presence of these barriers. We trained three caregivers to implement behavior-analytic feeding interventions in the absence and presence of caregiver-identified mealtime barriers relevant to their home mealtime setting. Although treatment integrity decreased across caregivers in the presence of the mealtime barriers, all caregivers implemented interventions with high integrity with the mealtime barriers present by the end of the study. We discuss these results in terms of considerations for improving the generality of caregiver treatment integrity outside of the clinical setting.

Disordered personality traits are frequently defined with respect to emotion dysregulation. However, research has needed to explore connections between disordered personality traits and emotion regulation strategies, particularly in older adulthood. The current study had older adult participants (n = 210; mean age: 66 years) complete measures of disordered personality traits, emotion regulation strategies, and difficulties in emotion regulation. Results demonstrated that disordered personality traits were more robustly associated with difficulties with emotion regulation relative to strategy use frequency. However, the five disordered traits exhibited distinct profiles of correlations with the regulation measures. Notably, detachment was largely unrelated to regulatory strategy use, whereas anankastia was similarly related to engagement and disengagement in emotion regulation.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Are leaders perceived as “mad” more likely to employ violent repression against elites? This article examines how a leader’s reputation for madness shapes the use of violent military purges in authoritarian regimes.

Methods

Using a global dataset covering 110 countries from 1981 to 2005, we analyze whether perceived madness influences leaders’ decisions to violently remove military elites.

Results

The results show that a reputation for madness is positively associated with violent purges, even after accounting for political institutions, economic conditions, and leadership transitions. This effect is conditional and time-sensitive. Leaders with military backgrounds are more likely to translate reputational signals of madness into violent purges, while longer tenure in office reduces the likelihood of such actions. Moreover, the effect of madness operates most strongly in the short term rather than accumulating over time. Overall, the findings suggest that madness functions as a strategic reputational signal shaping high-cost coercive behavior rather than as a general predictor of elite turnover.

ABSTRACT

Aims

This article examines how offenders with mental disorders are managed within Brunei Darussalam’s dual criminal procedure system, which operates through both common law and Sharīʿah frameworks. It seeks to identify the structural and procedural difficulties that arise at the intersection of mental health, criminal responsibility, and religiously grounded legal principles, and to advance practical and doctrinal reforms suited to Brunei’s institutional context.

Methods

The study adopts a doctrinal and comparative approach, analysing the Criminal Procedure Code, Mental Health Act 2014, Sharīʿah Court Criminal Procedure Code, and Sharīʿah Courts Evidence Order 2001. Provisions concerning fitness to plead, insanity, detention, consent to treatment, confidentiality, and expert testimony are examined alongside Islamic jurisprudential concepts such as taklīf (moral accountability) and maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (the higher objectives of Islamic law). Comparative reference is made to England and Wales to illuminate structural contrasts.

Results

Four interconnected challenges emerge. First, the absence of specialist forensic psychiatric facilities restricts assessment and diversion options and limits compulsory treatment pathways. Second, the Sharīʿah criminal process lacks a dedicated internal mechanism for psychiatric evaluation. Third, statutory safeguards governing detention review and treatment consent remain underdeveloped. Fourth, the absence of a recognised forensic psychiatry specialty and clear guidance on expert admissibility generates uncertainty, particularly in religiously sensitive cases.

Conclusion and Implications

While both legal traditions recognise impaired mental capacity as relevant to criminal liability, effective implementation is constrained by institutional fragmentation. The article proposes coordinated legislative reform, development of forensic psychiatric capacity, structured expert witness guidance, strengthened procedural safeguards, and the establishment of a national advisory framework to ensure a coherent, rights-compliant, and culturally grounded approach to mentally disordered offenders in Brunei.

ABSTRACT

Applications of self-determination theory (SDT) in workplace contexts have demonstrable utility in identifying motivational determinants of adaptive workplace outcomes (e.g., job satisfaction, work engagement) implicated in employee well-being and work productivity and effective stress management. Studies have found consistent SDT-stipulated associations between theory constructs (e.g., psychological need satisfaction, autonomous motivation) and adaptive workplace outcomes, although with substantive between-study variability. The current meta-analysis synthesised research reporting relations among SDT constructs and workplace outcomes and tested a novel model specifying SDT-stipulated predictions. In the proposed model, associations between employees’ perceived need support from workplace leaders and adaptive and maladaptive workplace outcomes were mediated by autonomy, competence, and relatedness need satisfaction and autonomous and controlled motivation forms. Multilevel meta-analysis of data from studies identified in a systematic database search (k = 192) confirmed SDT-consistent patterns of averaged correlations among theory constructs and outcomes. Meta-analytic structural equation modelling analysis of the proposed model indicated positive direct perceived need support–need satisfaction, need satisfaction–autonomous motivation forms, and autonomous motivation forms–adaptive outcome effects consistent with theory. Most salient, indirect effects of need support on adaptive workplace outcomes, and negative indirect effects on maladaptive outcomes, mediated by need satisfaction and autonomous motivation forms were observed. Moderation analyses indicated that model varied effects by work type, employee type, and country cultural orientation and GDP ranking. The analysis updates and advances prior research syntheses of SDT in workplace contexts providing robust support for the model including mechanism-related effects and identification of key moderators on which model effects are conditional.

Since the early 1990s, coparenting—a conceptual framework connecting clinical insights from structural family therapy to theory and research on the development of infants and toddlers within relationship systems—has brought new perspective to family and developmental science while hinting at ramifications for clinical practice. Coparenting theory and research evolved side by side with careful, intensive study of mother–father–child triangular relationships in families with very young children, work that expanded in recent years to include studies of other coparent–child triangular systems, such as those involving mothers, grandmothers, and infants. Until now, however, there has been no coordinated expert guidance for bringing concepts expounded in research studies of coparenting and triangular relationships to practitioners who work in infant–family mental health and family therapy contexts. In 2022, a collaborative of family-oriented infant mental health experts from seven countries, all bringing proficiency in assessing and working with coparenting and triangular family dynamics in research or clinical settings, organized to review and identify common agreed-upon behavioral manifestations of coparenting during triangular interactions. Recognizing four central dimensions capturing how coparents and children organize when interacting together as a triangular system (engagement, teamwork, conflict, and child focus), the International Coparenting Collaborative explains in this report how a standardized observational assessment, the Lausanne Trilogue Play, can be used to identify coparenting strengths and challenges and elevate practitioners’ attunement to coparenting dynamics within their therapeutic contexts. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)

This Data Article describes a novel dataset from the “Re-Examining Traditional Method Use” (TEAM-UP) project, which systematically collected data on the measurement of and motivations for use of non-modern (traditional and folkloric) contraceptive methods and/or modern methods, in four sub-Saharan African countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. TEAM-UP comprises four datasets (two quantitative and two qualitative), enabling comprehensive analyses of (1) the impact of methodological innovations on reporting of modern and non-modern method use, and prevalence estimates; (2) motivations for, and user experiences related to traditional and folkloric methods, and (3) contraceptive use dynamics across all methods and method types, including nonuse. Data collection was conducted in four stages: qualitative (Stage 1; 54 focus group discussions and 81 key informant interviews) and quantitative (Stage 2; n = 918) pilots, followed by women’s surveys (Stage 3; n = 13,625) and follow-up qualitative in-depth interviews (Stage 4; 469 interviews). The main TEAM-UP survey data are publicly available, with both the pilot and follow-up in-depth qualitative data available upon vetted request.

Abstract

The rapid digitalization of education has redefined parental roles in children’s learning, yet research has largely focused on children as technology users while overlooking parents’ own active engagement. This study explores parental digital involvement among Chinese primary school students using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of 20 interviews with 10 parents, supplemented by participants’ diaries and visual materials. The findings reveal that parents’ roles are shifting from ‘supporters’ to ‘navigators’ within specific parental groups and identify four involvement patterns: integrative, selective, adaptive and minimal, which are shaped by digital capital and technology acceptance. The Integrated Framework of Parental Digital Involvement proposed in the study advances digital capital theory by highlighting child-to-parent knowledge transfer and refines the Technology Acceptance Model by incorporating concerns about screen overuse, learning effectiveness and health. The study enriches theoretical understanding and offers practical strategies for equitable and sustainable parental engagement in the digital era.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Eating disorders are associated with high morbidity and mortality, requiring timely treatment by a competent workforce. Dietitians are important members of the eating disorders health care team. This study aimed to explore the perceived and changing eating disorders education and training needs of practising dietitians in Australia and New Zealand across two time points.

Method

A cross-sectional survey was administered to Australian and New Zealand dietitian members of professional associations in 2009 and 2022. The 2022 survey was administered online via Microsoft Forms and contained 51 items, including Likert scale, tick-box and open-ended responses. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of perceived knowledge, skill, comfort, confidence and educational need. Qualitative data was analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis.

Results

286 dietitians completed the 2009 survey and 147 the 2022 survey. In 2022 98% were female and 74% aged 20–40 years. Compared with 2009, dietitians in 2022 undertook more eating disorders education and training, reported greater knowledge and skill, and were more likely to express a need for education and training. Across both surveys, prior training, clinical experience and workplace setting predicted knowledge, skill, comfort or confidence. Prevention, detection, referral and a broad range of treatment aspects were identified as important educational areas.

Discussion

Improvements over time in access to eating disorders training and perceived knowledge and skill were evident. Key educational areas of prevention, detection, referral and treatment require action as a priority to ensure dietitians are well equipped to practice in eating disorders.

A multitude of studies have linked spending time in nature with different aspects of mental health and wellness…. But most research on this question has looked at people living in so-called WEIRD societies – Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic. As environmental psychologists based in the U.S. and in Germany, we were part of a team of more than 100 researchers who set out to examine this phenomenon on a global scale and determine how consistent it is around the world. Across countries as diverse as Brazil, Japan, Nigeria, Germany and Indonesia, we saw a clear pattern: People who felt more connected to nature also reported higher well-being.

ABSTRACT

People are at increased risk of suicide following discharge from inpatient mental health units. Understanding the reasons for this increased risk is important for reducing the number of people who die by suicide. Whilst reviews of quantitative research have identified risk factors, no reviews of the qualitative literature exist which could provide more nuanced explanations of elevated suicide risk during the post-discharge period. This systematic review is the first to meta-synthesise qualitative research on experiences of suicidality after being discharged from inpatient mental health units. We searched PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Web of Science, PubMed and ProQuest using relevant search terms. We identified 29 studies that met inclusion criteria and were included in the review. We analysed the data using thematic synthesis and identified five analytic themes: (1) Feeling prepared for the transition home, (2) Returning from safety to everyday hardship, (3) The need for connection and understanding, (4) Feeling neglected by the system, (5) Taking the reins on recovery. This review indicates that reducing post-inpatient discharge suicides could be achieved through collaborative discharge preparation, immediate and intensive post-discharge support, and empowering service-user recovery.
