The glimmer of hope is that Europe wakes up and realizes the cause for a great deal of instability and suffering on its immediate southern border is due to the US and Israel’s actions, and demands a stop to the warmongering while placing full blame on Washington and Tel Aviv for any fallout. But going by recent history, the lack of context in much of the coverage of the wars on Iran and Lebanon, and the spinelessness of the European establishment to stand up to the American hegemon or the Zionists, this is not likely to happen – but if it does, it will already be too late.

ABSTRACT

Introduction

Firearm violence is a major public health concern in the United States (US). Alcohol use and features of the alcohol environment, including outlet type and alcohol control policies, are factors known to increase the risk of firearm violence. On-premise alcohol outlets, where alcohol is sold and consumed on site, may influence firearm violence risk through modifications in the physical environment, social processes and policy contexts.

Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional study examining the association between multilevel characteristics of on-premise alcohol outlets and other social ecological conditions and shooting incidents across 69 US cities from 2022–2023. Shooting incidents were spatially linked to outlets within a 10-m buffer. A multivariable generalised linear mixed model with a logit link assessed associations between outlet, neighbourhood, and state factors and the odds of a shooting incident.

Results

The 19,472 on-premise outlets experienced 290 shooting incidents during the study period. Compared with bars, restaurants (OR = 0.58; 95% CI 0.42, 0.80) and other outlets (OR = 0.58; 95% CI 0.34, 1.00) had lower odds of experiencing a shooting. Greater neighbourhood socioeconomic advantage (per 1 SD increase: OR = 0.64; 95% CI 0.56, 0.74) and stronger state-level firearm laws (per 1 SD increase: 0.72; 95% CI 0.53, 0.97) were also found to be negatively associated with shooting incidents.

Discussion and Conclusions

Findings align with prior research linking stronger firearm laws, neighbourhood advantage and outlet type to reduced firearm violence risk. Multilevel prevention strategies addressing both structural and outlet-specific factors may help reduce firearm violence in on-premise alcohol outlets.

ABSTRACT

Background

This article uses suicide notes to explore the reasons individuals gave to end their life, and the links between suicide and the actualising tendency (AT). Suicide remains one of the most complex and challenging presentations in the mental health field. While much research has focused on risk factors, protective factors and epidemiological trends, relatively less attention has been paid to first-person accounts of suicidal experience. The AT, defined by Rogers as the inherent drive within all living organisms to develop, grow, and realise their full potential, provides a provocative lens through which to explore the paradox of suicidal behaviour.

Method and Findings

Using stanza and narrative analysis, 31 suicide notes were analysed which identified the reasons individuals provided for ending their life. Notes were also analysed in relation to propositions of the actualising tendency. Four predominate narratives were identified: ‘Can’t live with’, ‘Can’t live without’, ‘The other’ and ‘No other’. In addition, it was concluded that four notes indicated that suicide was an expression of the actualising tendency.

Conclusion

This research sheds light on the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of the AT. It shows that behaviours that appear harmful on the surface may, in fact, be driven by a deep, often unconscious, need to protect the self from greater perceived harm.

Abstract

Objectives

Early emerging emotional and behavioural problems can have a significant adverse impact on children’s wellbeing, mental health and educational outcomes that can persist through adolescence and adulthood. A growing body of research highlights children’s ability to recognise and understand emotions as a transdiagnostic intervention target. Interventions aimed at helping parents support this ability in their child could lead to benefits. Therefore, the current study aimed to systematically develop a brief parenting intervention to support children’s emotional understanding.

Design

We followed Medical Research Council (MRC) guidance for developing complex interventions and used the Delphi method to gather consensus on the content and delivery of the intervention.

Methods

In Round 1, interviews were conducted with academics, clinicians, parents and child and family practitioners with relevant experience. Thematic analysis of interviews generated themes and subthemes which were used to create a survey. In Round 2, this survey was shared with participants and they rated how important different potential elements of the intervention were to include in the manual.

Results

Round 1 interviews generated themes including practicalities, creating a safe group space and intervention content. In Round 2, all participants (response rate: 86.4%) were asked to complete the survey and results indicated all items achieved at least moderate consensus for inclusion.

Conclusions

How results were used to inform the intervention is discussed and implications for clinical practice addressed. This research has informed the development of a new parenting intervention which will be further researched in a feasibility trial.

Even more concerning, it frequently contradicted itself when asked the exact same question multiple times, sometimes flipping answers back and forth.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have shown that trauma exposure could affect visual working memory function in trauma survivors, regardless of psychopathological symptoms. However, the impact of psychological trauma on the brain function underlying working memory is unclear. To investigate this, a connectome-wide association (CWAS) study was conducted on visual working memory (VWM) in a spectrum of trauma-exposed individuals. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to scan 93 earthquake survivors, 44 of whom met the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and 49 did not. Fifteen participants with PTSD also had a comorbid major depressive disorder. The Wechsler Memory Scale-IV and clinical assessments were used to examine participants. A CWAS was conducted to search for a whole-brain multivariate connectome profile related to VWM performance. The results showed that VWM performance was robustly associated with the connectome profile of the left inferior parietal cortex (IPC). A post-hoc seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis using the left IPC as a seed revealed that the bilateral dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), posterior cingulate (PCC), and precuneus correlated positively with the IPC after correction. The correlations between the mean connectivity of the left IPC and the regions mentioned above and VWM scores further underscored the role of these connections in VWM performance in trauma survivors. These findings demonstrate a more comprehensive picture of the neural correlates of VWM performance in trauma survivors and suggest that modulating the functional connectivity between the IPC, insula, and dmPFC could shift attention bias and improve VWM performance in trauma-exposed survivors.

In England and Wales, the primary treatments for individuals convicted of sexual offences are psychological. However, medication to manage problematic sexual arousal (MMPSA) is gaining importance as an alternative. This article reviews the current evidence surrounding the MMPSA approach.

Aim

This paper synthesises challenges encountered, advancements achieved and learnings accumulated over 16 years of the MMPSA treatment pathway from 2009 to 2025 in England and Wales.

Methods

Drawing on a programme of mixed-methods research, including cohort studies, case studies, qualitative interviews with patients and professionals and implementation evaluations, this paper seeks to bring together key findings to present a consolidated picture of the research on the MMPSA pathway to date. The focus is on synthesising findings and identifying implications for service delivery.

Results

Evaluations of treatment outcomes showed promising results regarding the effectiveness of the MMPSA service. Qualitative analyses and case studies provided insightful details regarding patient and staff concerns that may hinder the efficiency and reach of the treatment pathway. Research with community clinicians highlighted issues regarding the ‘off-label’ use of medication for this purpose.

Conclusions

The MMPSA treatment service is available in a limited number of prisons in England and Wales. Supported by promising service evaluations and existing literature, a larger population could benefit from MMPSA treatment. Furthermore, the MMPSA service would benefit from improvements to create smoother transitions for individuals leaving prison and entering the community, and it should ideally be expanded to ensure that those in the community can also access the MMPSA service.

For the majority of Swedish households, heating is not an issue. Those living in the multi-household apartment blocks that characterise Sweden’s towns and cities enjoy average temperatures of 22°C inside their homes, thanks to communal heating systems that keep room temperatures high and costs low. For many households, heating is charged at a flat rate and included in the rent they pay. In the UK, meanwhile, home temperatures average just 16.6 degrees, the lowest in all of Europe. At least six million UK households fear the onset of cold weather because they are living in fuel poverty – unable to afford to heat their home to a safe and comfortable level.

Abstract

Efficient, low-cost approaches for disseminating evidence-based training on behavior-analytic interventions to professionals outside of North America are needed to address the scarcity of available services. This study evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of computer-based instruction for training professionals in Nigeria to conduct pairwise functional analyses of challenging behavior. Six professionals demonstrated high levels of procedural fidelity during role-play and in situ sessions with children after completing a self-paced computer-based instruction program that provided multiple opportunities for active responding and included culturally relevant content. Results extend prior research on virtual training of functional analysis implementation by incorporating a broader range of dependent variables (e.g., graphing, data interpretation) and delivering a fully asynchronous program. Results have implications for the further development of technologies to scale up the reach of behavior analysis services. Issues related to ensuring that asynchronous programs are delivered in an ethically responsible manner are discussed.

Abstract

This study synthesized the current evidence on how SL is being advanced through pedagogical strategies, identified global and regional publication trends, and uncovered challenges educators and policymakers encounter in promoting SL. We conducted a systematic review of 54 peer-reviewed articles retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE, Wiley and ScienceDirect. All studies were screened and analysed using the EPPI Reviewer tool to ensure rigour and consistency. Findings revealed distinct publication and regional trends, with the majority of studies focused on secondary education and concentrated in North America and Asia. Prominent pedagogical approaches included inquiry-based learning, problem- and project-based learning, socio-scientific issues, explicit instruction on the nature of science (NOS) and technology integration. However, advancing SL continues to face several challenges, including rigid curricula, inadequates 10763 teacher preparation and limited access to resources. Three key gaps emerged from the review: limited focus on SL in primary education, a lack of qualitative and mixed-methods studies, and a striking underrepresentation of research from Africa, South America and Oceania. We recommend that future studies adopt broader methodological frameworks and focus on underexplored educational levels and regions to ensure more equitable and globally relevant SL research.

Context and implications

Rationale for this study: Despite growing interest in scientific literacy (SL), existing reviews often focus narrowly on single pedagogical approaches or regions. This study was undertaken to provide a structured synthesis of trends, strategies and challenges shaping SL research in the early 21st century, with attention to methodological and contextual gaps.

Why the new findings matter: The findings show that progress in SL is constrained by the lack of instructional strategies and systemic constraints related to curriculum design, teacher preparation and resource availability. This highlights the need to move beyond isolated innovations toward more coherent and context-sensitive implementation.

Implications for researchers and educational institutions: Researchers are encouraged to adopt more qualitative, mixed-method and context-responsive designs, particularly in underrepresented regions and primary education. Educational institutions should align curricula, professional development and resource provision to support sustained implementation of inquiry-oriented and socio-scientific approaches.
