Abstract

This systematic review and meta-analysis examined randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental design studies targeting interventions to improve educational outcomes for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). It identified 467 studies with 2891 outcomes for the narrative review, and 349 studies with 1758 outcomes were included in the meta-analysis. Outcomes included in the meta-analysis related to reading (n = 1139), writing (n = 279), maths (n = 284), science (n = 3) and general attainment (n = 53). While there was substantial variability, targeted interventions for specific SEND groups improved educational outcomes by an average of 5 months compared to control groups, with positive impacts on reading, maths and writing. The setting (mainstream vs. special education) did not affect reading or writing outcomes, but interventions with students in mainstream settings showed larger gains in maths. Intervention effects were consistent regardless of delivery method, implementor or control group type. We discuss the implications of the findings for theory and practice, the research gaps identified and future directions.

Context and implications

Rationale for this study: Students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) often require targeted interventions to support their educational outcomes. Previous evaluations of targeted interventions have often focussed on one specific group of SEND or one specific outcome.

Why the new findings matter: This review included randomised controlled and quasi-experimental trials that evaluated targeted interventions across all categories of SEND. Across educational outcomes, pupils improved by an average of 5 months, with large variation evident. However, there were no consistent differences regarding delivery method, implementor or control group type.

Implications for practitioners and policy makers: Despite gaps in the evidence, this review demonstrates that school setting and stage of education moderate the effectiveness of targeted interventions, with these effects varying across educational outcomes. These findings highlight the need for context-sensitive approaches rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. By clarifying how contextual factors influence intervention success, the review offers actionable insights, supporting evidence-informed decisions to improve outcomes for students with SEND.

ABSTRACT

This article examines whether social capital facilitates or dissuades urban families from taking up safety net programs. Using longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, we explore how various components of social capital—operating at relational, organizational, and neighborhood levels—are related to participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The findings show that the elements of social capital play different roles in public aid receipt. Access to financial assistance from kin and enrollment in childcare centers is associated with lower odds of SNAP and TANF use. A lack of social ties with one’s neighbors is associated with higher odds of SNAP receipt in high-poverty areas. Families who know at least some neighbors are more likely to use TANF, but this does not vary by neighborhood poverty. This article demonstrates the importance of investigating the components of social capital to better understand how families attain resources.

ABSTRACT

Background

Crisis and Liaison teams in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) offer intensive, short-term support to young people experiencing mental health crisis in the community (Crisis) or admitted to acute hospitals (Liaison). There is no evidence-based model for how these teams operate. The SAFER care bundle, designed to improve discharges from acute hospitals, has been adapted for use in mental health inpatient discharges for adults (SAFER-MH) and young people (SAFER-YMH). This study took a care bundle designed to improve discharges from CAMHS inpatient care (SAFER-YMH) and used stakeholder feedback to adapt it for use in CAMHS Crisis and Liaison teams.

Design

Focus groups were carried out with healthcare professionals (HCPs), young people and parents/carers to present the SAFER care bundle and discuss necessary adaptations for use in CAMHS Crisis and Liaison teams. Analysis of transcripts followed a Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) framework to identify barriers and facilitators to implementation and necessary adaptations.

Results

Participants expressed that integrating the SAFER-YCL care bundle into the electronic patient record, automatically pulling information from other forms, and providing a template for discharge letters and safety plans could serve as an aide-memoire and potentially replace current discharge documents. It would need to avoid increasing documentation burden for staff and have flexibility to be administered by different staff members and at an appropriate time.

Conclusions

The SAFER-YCL care bundle has been successfully developed for implementation in CAMHS Crisis and Liaison services, demonstrating potential to enhance transition experiences. Feasibility testing will be crucial to validate its effectiveness and facilitate successful integration into clinical practice.

Patient or Public Contribution

This study was initially presented at the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Involvement group of young people to gather their thoughts on it. They were supportive of the study design and gave constructive feedback on the study. A PPI representative with lived experience was part of the study team who was involved in developing and reviewing all study materials, was part of monthly reviews of the study’s progress and supported data collection, analysis and write-up of the study results.

ABSTRACT

This article examines the migration trajectories and return experiences of Turkish nationals who sought entry to Europe via regular and irregular channels but ultimately returned to Türkiye. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study analyses how migrants’ actions are shaped by the recursive interplay between structural forces—legal regimes, socio-economic inequalities and border governance—and individual agency. Grounded in Giddens’ Structuration Theory, the analysis conceptualises migration and return as socially embedded practices mediated by institutional constraints and transnational imaginaries. Aspirational narratives of Europe, informed by digital media and social networks, initially guided mobility decisions but often collided with restrictive legal frameworks and socio-economic exclusion, prompting return as a reflexive recalibration. Rather than a linear or emotive process, return is framed as a negotiated response to structurally embedded conditions. The article advances debates on irregular migration and reintegration by calling for policy approaches that account for both structural determinants and the adaptive agency of returnees.

Background

This study was conducted to examine mothers’ perceptions regarding the menstruation period of female adolescents with severe intellectual disabilities and the impact of this period on mothers.

Method

A qualitative research methodology was adopted in this study, utilising a phenomenological design. A criterion study group, a type of purposive study group, was employed. Data collection tools included a personal information form and semi-structured interviews. The obtained data were analysed using descriptive and content analysis.

Results

Two themes were identified in this study: ‘Mothers’ perceptions of menstruation in female adolescents’ and ‘Impacts of female adolescents’ menstruation on the mothers’ Subthemes linked to these themes and corresponding codes were derived under each theme.

Conclusions

This study examined the menstruation periods of female adolescents with severe intellectual disabilities from the mothers’ perspective and revealed the current situation.

ABSTRACT

Background

The associations between 24-h movement behaviours (24 h MBs) and emotional and behavioural problems (EBPs) in early years are not well understood. This study examined these associations in a nationally representative sample of Chinese preschoolers.

Methods

As part of the Chinese cohort of the SUNRISE International Study of Movement Behaviors in the Early Years main study, this research recruited 1316 children aged 3–4 years through multistage stratified cluster sampling in urban and rural areas across seven major administrative regions in China. Moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity physical activity (LPA) and sedentary behaviour (SED) were measured using 24-h accelerometry over five consecutive days. Sleep duration was parent-reported. EBPs were evaluated using the parent-rated Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), which assesses total difficulties, internalising problems, externalising problems and prosocial behaviour. Compositional multiple linear regression was employed to analyse the relationships between 24 h MBs and EBPs. Compositional isotemporal substitution was also utilised to predict changes in EBPs due to reallocating time among 24 h MBs.

Results

Isotemporal substitution analyses revealed that replacing as little as 1 min of MVPA, LPA or SED with sleep was associated with significant reductions in total difficulties (βMVPA = −0.01, 95%CI −0.02 to −0.01; βLPA = −0.01, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.001; βSED = −0.01, 95%CI −0.02 to −0.01) and externalising problems (βMVPA = −0.01, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.002; βLPA = −0.003, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.0003; βSED = −0.005, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.002). Similarly, reallocating MVPA or SED with sleep was associated with significantly reduced internalising problems (βMVPA = −0.01, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.002; βSED = −0.01, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.004). A significant predicted improvement in prosocial behaviour was observed only when time was reallocated from SED to sleep (β = 0.002, 95%CI 0.0002 to 0.004). Furthermore, transferring time from MVPA or SED to LPA was linked to a decrease in internalising problems (βMVPA = −0.004, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.0002; βSED = −0.004, 95%CI −0.01 to −0.002) and conduct problems (βMVPA = −0.002, 95%CI −0.004 to −0.0003; βSED = −0.01, 95%CI −0.002 to −0.0002).

Conclusion

Increasing LPA by reducing MVPA or SED was significantly associated with improvements in internalising and conduct problems, whereas increasing sleep to decrease MVPA or SED—even by small amounts—was consistently associated with improvements in EBPs across all SDQ subscales. However, increasing LPA at the expense of sleep exacerbates total difficulties and externalising problems. Promoting diverse LPA opportunities alongside sufficient sleep, while maintaining a balance between them, is essential for supporting preschoolers’ emotional and behavioural development.

ABSTRACT

The current study aimed to examine the direct and indirect linkages between economic pressure and adolescent depression. A total of 971 adolescents completed the questionnaires regarding economic pressure, loneliness, school connectedness, and depression. Path analysis was conducted to examine the hypothesized model. Findings revealed that economic pressure significantly predicts adolescents’ loneliness, which exacerbates their depressive symptoms. School connectedness moderated the direct and indirect associations between economic pressure and adolescents’ depression. The results suggested that future preventive and intervention programs should consider psychological-based techniques and prevent adolescents from being influenced by economic pressure.
