ABSTRACT

Background

The lived experience of clinical supervisors is under researched. To help fill this gap, the researcher completed a doctoral study into the lived experience of Relate supervisors. Relate was, at the time of the research, a UK charity which provides counselling. The article draws on this doctoral research and presents findings around one of the research questions: supervisors’ lived experience of role tension.

Method

The research was completed from an insider researcher perspective as the researcher was a Relate supervisor when she undertook it. A mixed method qualitative/quantitative approach was taken and the research was underpinned by a phenomenological methodology. Firstly, a qualitative/quantitative survey was completed by Relate supervisors and analysed through reflexive thematic analysis. Secondly, semi-structured interviews were undertaken with ten RIelate supervisors and analysed via interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Findings

Findings from the survey reveal a discrepancy in the expectations of supervisors, supervisees and managers around the supervisor role, which causes supervisors tension. Whilst delivering support comes naturally to supervisors and they believe that supervisees require support, they are uncomfortable delivering the enforcement function. Equally, they recognise that the priority for managers is the management of risk and the enforcement of policy and procedures. Interview findings similarly demonstrate this role tension. Themes include the discomfort of being the ‘policeman’, and tension caused by synthesising functions and being pulled into line management.

Implications

By bringing an empirical, phenomenological perspective to the supervisor role, this research expands our understanding. It has the potential to raise awareness and build knowledge, resulting in changes to the way supervision is delivered through supervisor and supervisee training.

Mar 5th 2026, 03:42

Background

Children often experience both posttraumatic stress (PTS) and depression after potentially traumatic events (PTEs). Latent class analyses (LCAs) identify subgroups with different co-occurring symptoms, but little is known about what predicts transitions between these symptom classes over time. Analyzing these transitions could reveal factors that influence the shift to classes with fewer internalizing symptoms.

Methods

Using harmonized individual participant data (n = 787) from nine studies (United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Switzerland) included in the Prospective studies of Acute Child Trauma and Recovery Data Archive (PACT/R), internalizing symptom classes (using PTS and depression items) were identified using LCAs for T1 (0–2 months posttrauma) and T2 (3–15 months posttrauma) separately. Latent transition analysis was used to examine predictors of transitions across symptom classes over time. Included predictors were age, gender, minority status, and trauma type.

Results

Five classes were identified at both time points: ‘low internalizing’ class (T1: 20%; T2: 40%), ‘low PTS/moderate-high depression’ class (T1: 20%; T2: 27%), ‘moderate internalizing’ class (T1: 25%; T2: 12%), ‘moderate PTS/high depression’ class (T1: 17%, T2: 14%), and ‘high internalizing’ class (T1: 16%, T2: 6%). ‘Low internalizing’ was the most common and stable response (87% stayed in this class). At both time points, 40% of all children were classified into either a ‘low PTS/moderate-high depression’ class or a ‘moderate PTS/high depression’ class. Children belonging to minority groups in their country of residence and children exposed to interpersonal PTEs were less likely to transition from the ‘high internalizing’ class to lower symptom classes.

Conclusions

Most children show low PTS and depression symptoms after PTEs. When symptoms do develop, they usually involve both high depression and PTS, rather than high PTS with low depression. This underscores the importance of assessing both conditions and developing interventions that target multiple disorders. Minority children exposed to interpersonal trauma require special focus in research and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Left-behind children—those who remain in rural areas under the care of grandparents while their parents migrate to urban centres for work—are disproportionately vulnerable to teacher-perpetrated (child sexual abuse [CSA]) in rural school settings. This scoping review aims to examine how issues related to teacher-perpetrated CSA are represented in existing literature and media discourse, as these portrayals can significantly shape public perceptions of CSA and influence policy responses that directly affect victims, survivors and perpetrators. Media reports on incidents of teacher-perpetrated CSA against rural left-behind children (hereafter ‘teacher-perpetrated CSA’) were systematically collected. The search focused on Chinese-language publications with accessible full texts; reports lacking detailed case descriptions were also included. A total of 19 cases reported between 2000 and 2023 were identified, and the characteristics of both perpetrators and victims were analysed. Media coverage revealed a disproportionately high number of assault cases involving left-behind girls in rural schools. The absence of age-appropriate sex education in China likely contributes to children’s limited awareness of CSA and inadequate self-protection knowledge. Furthermore, insufficiently developed sex-crime legislation often leaves victims without effective legal recourse. Existing laws fail to ensure that compensation provided by perpetrators to underage victims reflects the severity of the offence, highlighting a critical gap in victim protection and justice enforcement. The greatest challenge at present is that rural left-behind children continue to live in unprotected environments where they are at risk of sexual abuse. Under the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Protection of Minors, families, schools, society and the judicial system all share a legal and moral responsibility to safeguard left-behind children from teacher-perpetrated CSA. Effective prevention requires coordinated efforts across these sectors to build a comprehensive protective network that ensures children’s safety and well-being.

Abstract

Young people’s aspirations have been the focus of many educational, sociological and psychological studies. This paper argues, firstly, that the concept of aspirations holds greater generative potential than suggested by the policy-oriented ‘aspiration discourse’. Secondly, drawing on a sociocultural perspective, it is suggested that the processes of imagination and semiotic mediation are key aspects of aspiration articulation and instantiation, yet both concepts have been played down in the aspiration literature. Thirdly, after re-conceptualising aspirations through a sociocultural lens as temporarily stabilised symbolic assemblages, imbued with imagination and developed in anticipation of life transitions, the paper introduces two empirical case studies. The case studies illustrate how sociocultural re-conceptualisation can reveal additional insights about how and why young people assemble particular career aspirations by drawing on available cultural resources. Implications for aspiration research in general and higher education aspiration research in particular are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Objective

This three-wave longitudinal study examined if maternal and paternal depressive symptoms mediated the associations of family economic pressure with maternal and paternal social functioning among Chinese families.

Background

Most research on family economic pressure has focused on its implications for family relationships and child adjustment. Its potential impact on parental social functioning and the possibly unique roles of mothers versus fathers remains underexplored. Therefore, using three waves of dyadic data, this study examined the interrelationships among family economic pressure, depressive symptoms, and social functioning among Chinese mothers and fathers.

Method

On three occasions separated by about 6 months, data were collected from the mothers and fathers (65% and 54% were aged 31–40 years, respectively) of 191 kindergarten-aged children from Hong Kong, China. Mothers and fathers rated their shared family conditions and their own depressive symptoms and social functioning.

Results

Structured equation modeling indicated that family economic pressure was associated with increases in mothers’ and fathers’ depressive symptoms, which in turn were associated with decreases in their own social functioning. Fathers’ depressive symptoms mediated the association of family economic pressure with mothers’ social functioning.

Conclusion

Findings highlighted the importance of linking family economic pressure to extrafamilial roles and treating both parents as a related system. Findings also pointed to the possible utility of addressing the depressive symptoms of mothers and fathers to enhance their social functioning.

ABSTRACT

The Myanmar military coup in February 2021 exacerbated the existing severe humanitarian crisis, resulting in the displacement of over 3.5 million civilians as of June 2025. Additionally, 78,731 individuals sought asylum in neighboring India as of 2023, fleeing the persecution and armed conflict in their homeland. This qualitative study examines the lived experiences and coping mechanisms of Myanmar refugees in Mizoram, India, after the 2021 coup through interviews with camp leaders, refugees and camp helpers. This study findings highlight the challenges faced by displaced populations, including insufficient humanitarian assistance for basic needs, restricted livelihood opportunities, and barriers to accessing healthcare have worsened their psychological distress and well-being. This study findings also revealed that due to lack of formal mental health support in refugee camps, refugees have to rely on religious coping strategies and communal gatherings as resilience mechanisms. This research findings underscore the need for structured humanitarian interventions, including the enhanced provision of essential services, COVID-19 vaccination programs, and psychosocial support for displaced Myanmar populations in Mizoram. This study contributes to the refugee welfare discourse in conflict-induced displacement settings by highlighting the role of international and local aid agencies in addressing asylum seekers’ vulnerabilities.

ABSTRACT

Background

School refusal has negative consequences throughout life. While parental education and child poverty are closely linked to school refusal, the mechanism by which parental low education influences school refusal in offspring remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined the association between parental low education and several dimensions of child poverty (low income and deprivation) with school refusal among first grade (6–7 years old) elementary school students in Japan.

Methods

Data were obtained from the Adachi Child Health Impact of Living Difficulty (A-CHILD) study conducted in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 in Adachi City, Tokyo, Japan (N = 13 258). Parental education was classified as none, one or both parents graduated from some college or more. Inability to afford essential items or service payments was used to measure deprivation. A multivariate logistic regression model was used for the analysis, adjusting for other sociodemographic characteristics.

Results

The prevalence of school refusal was 3.1% (N = 416). We found a positive association between parental low education and school refusal after adjusting for covariates (OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.82). The association was attenuated by further adjustment by low income and deprivation, which showed a higher risk of school refusal (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 0.98, 2.13 and OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.25, 2.10, respectively). Low income and deprivation explained 9.2% and 39.4% of the association between parental low education and school refusal of the offspring, respectively.

Conclusions

Lower educational attainment of parents was a risk of school refusal from an early stage of mandatory education in Japan, which can be explained partially by low income and deprivation. Policymakers should be aware that school refusal from an early age is common in families with low socio-economic status and should proactively reach out to these parents.

ABSTRACT

Background

To examine how burnout among Japanese internists and primary care physicians evolved from the onset of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to the post-pandemic period.

Methods

We reanalyzed data from five web-based surveys of members of the American College of Physicians—Japan Chapter between January 2020 and April 2024. Burnout was assessed using the Japanese version of the Mini-Z 2.0 survey. The survey dates corresponded to major pandemic phases: early pandemic (January 2020), first-wave peak (June 2020), mid-pandemic (March 2021), post-emergency (December 2022), and recovery phase (April 2024). Temporal trends in burnout prevalence were analyzed using the Cochran–Armitage test.

Results

A total of 1099 respondents were included. Burnout prevalence was the highest during the early pandemic (34.6% in January 2020, 34.5% in June 2020), declined modestly during the mid-pandemic phase (31.8% in March 2021), and further decreased to 26.2% by April 2024. A significant linear decline in burnout prevalence was observed over time (Ptrend = 0.038). Reduction in burnout corresponded with the easing of pandemic restrictions, vaccine rollout, and stabilization of healthcare operations.

Conclusions

Burnout among Japanese internists and primary care physicians declined significantly from the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic to the recovery phase. However, approximately one-quarter of physicians remained affected in 2024.

ABSTRACT

Background

Transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) is used routinely in gynecological care in Australia to manage gynecological health concerns. Typically, TVS is well tolerated by patients, with low levels of discomfort reported. Trans and gender diverse people assigned female at birth may experience gender dysphoria or testosterone-related anatomical changes, which could make such intimate examinations physically difficult or emotionally distressing. However, to date, no studies have considered the impact of gender identity on individuals’ experiences of TVS. To fill this research gap, we explored the experiences of TVS among trans and gender diverse individuals assigned female at birth within Australia.

Methods

We conducted semi-structured interviews with trans and gender diverse individuals assigned female at birth who have experienced TVS in Australia. We analyzed all interviews in line with Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis.

Results

Ten trans and gender diverse individuals aged between 18 and 50 years old participated in this study. From their interviews, we developed three overarching themes: (1) It’s a bit like being a detective, (2) So I could properly say, “I don’t want this done,” and (3) I definitely felt like a novelty. Participants described a range of positive and negative experiences with TVS, with issues related to cisnormativity in documentation, staff attitudes, and inadequate informed consent consistently highlighted.

Conclusion

Trans and gender diverse people face challenges in accessing inclusive gynecological care in Australia. Our findings highlight a need for improved informed consent guidelines, better education and training for health professionals, and more inclusive clinic documentation to promote inclusive care.

I have learned that this is not a failure of values but a failure of a system that steadily reallocates judgment away from people and into process—until no one feels authorized to intervene, even when harm is plainly unfolding. We are at an inflection point where we must ensure that judgment and decision-making power lie where they belong: not in arbitrary systems but in the hands of the people—because systems fail arbitrarily, and at times, by design.
