School Psychology, Vol 41(1), Jan 2026, 15-28; doi:10.1037/spq0000710

Manifestation determination reviews (MDRs) are federally mandated as a condition of extended removal for students with disabilities. Despite the potentially significant consequences MDRs hold for students with disabilities, data on the role that biases play in these high-stakes decisions are limited. This investigation sought to elucidate potential biases affecting MDRs across 105 school districts (N = 517) using two newly developed MDR measures assessing MDR knowledge and perceived student intentionality. In an online investigation using experimental and cross-sectional strategies, school personnel made MDR decisions after being randomly assigned to read a vignette about a Black or White student who might have acted out due to an emotional disability. Results revealed that racial and stigmatizing biases covaried with MDR decisions. Higher MDR substantive knowledge (whether the student’s misconduct was a manifestation of their disability) was associated with a manifestation decision for the White student only. For both students, greater endorsement of student intentionality was associated with making more nonmanifestation decisions. Black students were held to a higher behavioral standard than White students when school personnel made local educational agency implementation failure decisions. Men school personnel were more likely to make nonmanifestation decisions and believed that the students had behavioral control and consequential awareness. Additionally, teachers endorsed more negative racial stereotypical beliefs about White and Black students than other school personnel. Our findings support the need to develop evidence-based training to help school personnel identify and address biases affecting MDR decisions, including measures that assess team members’ knowledge and potential biases before these high-stakes decisions.

American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Vol 96(1), 2026, 1-10; doi:10.1037/ort0000826

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global health concern that is known to result in a plethora of detrimental outcomes, among them trauma-related symptoms. According to the betrayal trauma theory, these outcomes may be rooted not only in the abusive partner’s betrayal but also in institutional betrayal, namely institutions’ failure to fulfill their obligations to provide safety, resources, and protection to IPV victims/survivors. Yet, thus far, research on institutional betrayal has been focused on survivors of abuse that occurred within an institutional context. This study aimed to explore the implications of institutional betrayal for trauma-related symptoms among survivors of IPV, while broadening the scope of institutional betrayal and exploring institutional betrayal in relation to varied contexts. An online survey was conducted among Israeli female adults using self-report measures. The sample consisted of 117 IPV survivors, Mage = 39.35 (SD = 7.9), who reported involvement of various institutions around their IPV. Regression models indicated that institutional betrayal had a unique effect in explaining all four clusters of trauma-related symptoms. The risk for clinically significant trauma-related symptoms increased by 3% (OR = 1.03) for each increase in institutional betrayal, after controlling for income, having children with the abusive partner, degree of IPV exposure, and being abused by multiple partners. The present results suggest that institutional betrayal can be a retraumatizing experience, amplifying trauma-related distress in IPV survivors.

ABSTRACT

Automation in public administration is often seen as a recent, purely digital phenomenon that transforms decision-making and governance. This article challenges that view by elucidating a historical continuum in the automation of administrative decision-making. It introduces the concept of analog automation to highlight how complex social, organizational, legal, and historical factors have impacted decision-makers’ discretionary space and paved the way for digital automation. Drawing on public administration, science and technology studies, and sociolegal scholarship, the article uses analog automation to study the gradual yet significant change of automation in Finland’s social assistance system over four decades. Analysis of legislative and policy documents shows how discretionary space has been gradually restricted by changes in organizational structures and practices and their adoption into legal obligations. The article provides historical context to current debates on digital transformation, showing how long-standing institutional developments enable automation and how standardization and discretion have become increasingly intertwined.

Four years ago, we woke up not to the sound of alarm clocks, but to explosions. Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv. Within days, Russian troops were approaching the capital. We were told Ukraine would fall in three days. We did not fall. We are still standing. But the war has not ended. As Ukraine marks the fourth year since the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation, the situation remains volatile, dangerous, and increasingly complex. The cumulative social consequences are deepening.

Feb 26th 2026, 04:02

Abstract

Purpose

Alopecia is a medical dermatology condition resulting in multiple psychosocial negative consequences in identity and appearence. Despite numerous qualitative studies examining the experience of people with alopecia, a comprehensive synthesis is lacking. This can obscure progress in research and minimize the impact of psychosocial support people with alopecia can receive. This systematic meta-synthesis aimed to critically integrate the existing literature to enhance psychological understanding of how people with alopecia manage issues about identity and appearance changes, and provide some evidence-based recommendations for clinicians working in the area of psychodermatology.

Methods

A systematic search of six databases: APA PsycInfo (OVID), Medline (OVID), Embase (OVID), CINAHL (EBSCO) and Scopus identified 22 eligible studies on the lived experience of alopecia among adults, adolescents and parents. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Qualitative Checklist was used to appraise the quality of the studies. Extracted data underwent inductive thematic analysis.

Results

The synthesis, representing 990 people living with alopecia, identified five main themes, focusing on managing identity and appearance changes: (1) coming to terms with a changed identity; (2) the journey to acceptance; (3) complexities of concealing hair loss; (4) social influences in both facilitating and hindering adaptation; and (5) treatment experiences highlighting unmet needs. Findings reveal substantial variation in managing identity and appearance changes, with some individuals achieving acceptance swiftly while others struggle. Social reactions and personal interpretations significantly shape adjustment.

Conclusions

Alopecia profoundly impacts identity, coping, and social interactions, often accompanied by dissatisfaction with health care and treatment options. The reactions of other people and interpretations of these experiences appear to play a key role in adjustment. The review underscores the need for personalized, non-pharmacological interventions that address personal and social challenges. Greater co-production in health care training and intervention development is necessary to improve support for individuals with appearance-altering conditions.
