Background

Previous research on the protective effects of school holidays on adolescent suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has relied on hospital records which underestimate self-harm prevalence and has not been explored in the post pandemic environment. This study utilised ambulance attendance data to explore whether protective effects of school holidays on suicidal and NSSI behaviours were present pre- and post-COVID-19 restrictions.

Methods

Using data from the National Ambulance Surveillance System, weekly ambulance attendances for suicidal and NSSI behaviours among adolescents (12–17) and young adults (18–25) in Victoria, Australia, were analysed. Trends in rates per 10,000 population pre- (2015–2019) and post-COVID-19 restrictions (2022–2023) were modelled using seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average with exogenous variables, stratified by age and gender.

Results

There were 20,635 suicidal and NSSI related ambulance attendances among adolescents and 36,510 among young adults. Pre-COVID-19 there was a significant decline in weekly rate of attendances per 10,000 population for adolescent females during the December/January (−0.35, p < .001), June/July (−0.46, p = .007) and September/October (−0.41, p = .004) holidays. Similar declines were seen in adolescent males during the December/January (−0.12, p = .003), April/May (−0.22, p = .001), June/July (−0.26, p = .003) and September/October (−0.15, p = .027) holidays. No significant effects were observed for young adults or post-pandemic.

Conclusions

Seasonal trends in adolescent suicidal and NSSI harms were evident prior to COVID-19, but were no longer present post-pandemic. Understanding these changes is crucial for informing targeted mental health interventions and support for adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Children’s participation in planning is essential for their overall development, yet it remains widely overlooked in strategic governance. This article explores how children are involved into national and municipal strategic documents in Czechia. Using thematic analysis, it examines the contexts and topics in which children are mentioned. While findings show that children are largely absent or marginally included, notable exceptions are emerging. In particular, several municipalities—especially those with measured low quality of life—have begun involving children in the creation of strategic plans, influencing both the content and framing of children-related issues within these documents.

From the healthcare perspective, the prevention strategies for men aged over 70 years were cost-effective with the ICER of $28 403/QALY for osteoporosis and $24 560/QALY for osteopenia. Scenario analyses revealed screening strategies were cost-effective in men with risk factors aged over 60 years. In the selection of medication, denosumab might be dominant. From the societal perspective, prevention for osteopenia aged from 60 years was cost-effective at the ICER of $36 524/QALY.

These findings suggest that prevention strategies for Chinese older men with excessive alcohol consumption would be cost-effective. Early screening initiation will aid efforts in improving skeletal health for men with excessive alcohol intake in China and reducing humanistic and economic burdens.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between marital conflict, parenting stress and parenting efficacy of fathers on children’s self-regulation via a positive parenting style. For this purpose, a structural equation model was developed. The seventh data collected under the Panel Study on Korean Children by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education were used for analysis. Data included responses of 1463 fathers with a child between 72 and 79 months of age. The fathers’ mean age was 39.28 years (SD = 3.99). SPSS 24.0 and Amos 24.0 were used for data analyses. The results of this study were as follows: First, paternal marital conflict had a significantly positive influence on parenting stress and children’s self-regulation, and parenting stress had a negative influence on parenting efficacy. In addition, parenting efficacy had a significantly positive influence on positive parenting style, and positive parenting style had a positive influence on self-regulation. Second, paternal marital conflict, parenting stress and parental efficacy indirectly or directly influenced positive parenting style. Paternal marital conflict, parenting stress and parenting efficacy indirectly or directly influenced children’s self-regulation via a positive parenting style. The results of the study suggest the need to reduce marital conflict, parenting stress, and increase parenting efficacy in order to positively influence children’s self-regulation through parenting style.

ABSTRACT

Background and Hypothesis

In people with psychotic disorders, exercise is known to improve psychotic symptoms; however, the mechanisms underlying these effects are unclear. In the network approach, mental disorders are conceptualised as complex systems of interacting symptoms. In this context, exercise interventions could modify the dynamic of psychotic symptoms within the network. Using data from two independent clinical trials using exercise, the aim was to investigate the impact of exercise interventions on network connectivity, then compare the network structure pre and post intervention.

Study Design

Combined data from two clinical trials on exercise with a total of 106 participants with a diagnosis of psychotic disorder were included. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess symptom severity using semi-structured interviews. Networks analyses were performed to compare before and after exercise.

Study Results

At baseline, the PANSS network was densely connected with several strong positive connections. Symptoms being most central were negative symptoms. After exercise, the network was less dense and less connected, and the connections were different. When the networks before and after exercise were compared, they were significantly different in terms of structure, but not global strength.

Conclusion

This study is the first to show that exercise seems to favour a disconnection between psychotic symptoms and could modify the network structure, providing a first mechanism of action which would require more investigation.
