ABSTRACT

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) assesses personality pathology as a combination of impairment (Criterion A) and problematic personality traits (Criterion B). The current study explores the ability of the traditional Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) Borderline scales combined with new PAI-derived AMPD borderline personality disorder (BPD) facets in predicting DSM BPD criteria. The DSM BPD criteria were identified by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (SCID-II) and by the OMNI Borderline Personality Scale. This study employed two clinical samples (n = 143 and n = 129). Correlations among the AMPD BPD facets, PAI BOR scales and SCID-II items or OMNI Borderline scale were calculated. A series of hierarchical linear regressions with stepwise entry revealed that the combination of PAI BOR subscales and AMPD BPD facets provided the strongest prediction of SCID-II Borderline PD criteria and OMNI Borderline scale, explaining 37% and 67% of the variance, respectively. Lastly, we assessed the BPD facet total and PAI BOR full scale’s ability to predict psychological health and illness severity. Clinical and research implications are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Aim

Emerging adulthood is a critical period for health interventions. The gender gap in substance use disorder (SUD) prevalence between men and women has been consistently narrowing, particularly amongst emerging adults (EAs), yet women remain underrepresented in SUD research. This study aims to investigate pretreatment and treatment dropout rates and predictors in patients at a Women-Specific Outpatient Service in Brazil, across different age strata: emerging adults (EAs, 18–25), middle aged adults (MAAs, 26–59), and older adults (OAs, 60+).

Methods

An observational cohort study across 27 years. Pretreatment dropout was evaluated with multivariate logistic regression. Survival curves with dropout as event were estimated for each age stratum and log rank tests were performed. Survival probabilities and Cox proportional hazards models were used to gauge dropout risk and determine dropout risk factors.

Results

The 756 women were included, comprising 125 EAs, 585 MAAs, and 46 OAs. MAAs showed lower odds of pretreatment dropout than EAs (OR = 0.56, p = 0.025). EAs exhibited lowest treatment retention, with only 13% remaining in treatment at 104 weeks (p < 0.0001). Cox regression indicated that higher education was protective, with tertiary education reducing dropout risk (HR = 0.65, p = 0.038), whilst cocaine/crack use increased it (HR = 1.57, p = 0.017). Patients enrolled in more recent years had a higher risk of dropout whithin the first six months of treatment.

Conclusions

Emerging adulthood is a critical period for health interventions. The gender gap is narrowing amongst EAs, and women are still underrepresented in studies. We found very high pretreatment and treatment dropout rates amongst Emerging Adults in our sample. These findings underscore the necessity for early-stage risk stratification and intervention protocols for this subpopulation.

Abstract

Objective

This study aimed to explore how Arab mothers in Israel perceive their intergenerational relationships with young adult daughters within the sociocultural context of Arab society and their intersecting marginalized positions as women and ethnic minority members.

Background

Intergenerational relationships among ethnic minorities are shaped by cultural, social, and religious contexts. This study is among the first to highlight Arab mothers’ voices in Israel, expanding the largely Western-focused literature. It draws on intergenerational solidarity and intersectional marginality frameworks.

Method

Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 27 Arab mothers of young adult daughters recruited through social media and snowball sampling.

Results

Two main themes emerged: (a) self-perceptions of motherhood: responsibility for educational and religious values and allowing decision-making space; and (b) collaborative dialogue: emotional support, mutual understanding, and negotiation of disagreement.

Conclusion

Mother–daughter relations in Arab society reflect cultural and religious values that stress achievement and family reputation. Mothers combine supervisory and supportive roles, blending control with emotional closeness, whereas solidarity emerges within marginality.

Implications

Practitioners should acknowledge mothers’ complex roles balancing tradition, autonomy, and faith. Culturally sensitive interventions can promote empowerment, emotional well-being, and agency within these intergenerational contexts.

ABSTRACT

Research indicates that marital rape is viewed by the public as less harmful to a victim than stranger/acquaintance rape. The aim of the study is to extend the research conducted by Robinson in 2017, investigating how levels of force influence perceptions of marital rape. The study also examines how rape perception is influenced by rape myth acceptance and attitudes towards women. The current study improves on previous work by controlling for individual differences across groups using a repeated-measures design. The results indicate that as the level of force increases the perception of marital rape increases. Positive attitudes towards women and low rape myth acceptance are also found to have a positive impact on perceptions of marital rape. Based on these findings, it is possible to recommend that further awareness of legislation regarding coercion and marital rape is required within the public domain.

ABSTRACT

Objective

The limited literature on family planning among Asian populations in the United States suggests that this group underutilizes contraception. We examined factors associated with contraceptive use, particularly among South Asians.

Methods

We used cross-sectional data from the 2013, 2014, and 2016 New York City Community Health Surveys and included women and men aged 18–44 years who engaged in sexual activity with a member of a different sex in the last year and did not intend to get pregnant, were not/partner was not pregnant, and could/partner could get pregnant (N = 7101). We conducted bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions with backward elimination to estimate the association between sociodemographic, behavioral, and health care-related factors with the use of any contraceptive at the last sexual encounter. The primary analysis included race as a key independent variable and the secondary analysis was restricted only to South Asians (n = 189).

Results

Two thirds of South Asians (67%) used a contraceptive at last sexual encounter. After full adjustment, compared to South Asians, other Asians showed a higher likelihood of using contraception (aOR 1.54; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.26). In the secondary analysis of South Asians, those who were married/living together (aOR 0.19; 95% CI: 0.08, 0.45) or divorced/separated/widowed (aOR 0.14; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.68) showed a lower likelihood of using any contraception compared to those who were never married.

Conclusion

Researchers need to conduct additional research to better understand contraceptive behavior among South Asians and identify if/what optimal interventions will increase access and help meet and support their reproductive goals and autonomy.

Several professional health care organizations, including the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, issued statements in January condemning disruptions in health care stemming from ICE actions.
