Abstract

Objective

The human–animal bond (HAB) has been shown to provide a buffering effect for stress and adversity, particularly when individuals experience lower social support networks. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the HAB, perceived human social support and resilience by assessing whether the HAB could moderate the impact of social support as a protective factor for resilience. Additionally, whether the relationship between the HAB and human social support may be curvilinear was explored.

Method

A cross-sectional study of a large community sample of pet owners (n = 392) and non-owners (n = 146) provided information about their human social supports and resilience, and the strength of pet owners emotional bond to their companion animal.

Results

There was no difference in levels of resilience between pet owners and non-owners, but social support was positively associated with resilience for both. The HAB was not a significant moderator between levels of social support and resilience for owners. However, there was a significant curvilinear relationship between the HAB and perceived human social support.

Conclusion

The lack of evidence for HAB being a buffer between perceived human social support and resilience may partly be due to the curvilinear relationship between the strength of the HAB and perceived human social support. Extremely weak or strong HABs may be correlated with a reduced capacity to build resilience and process adversity. Therefore, this study highlights the complexities of the HAB and its relationship with human mental health, offering alternative considerations for future research.

ABSTRACT

Disgust helps humans avoid potentially pathogenic substances such as bodily effluvia. This reduces illness risks and is difficult to overcome with cognitive strategies or through short-term habituation (minutes to hours). Whether long-term habituation (months to years) exists is an unsolved question. While regular professional exposure to disgust elicitors is associated with lower disgust sensitivity and avoidance, this could reflect selection and survivorship bias. We use the natural quasi-experiment of parenthood: it greatly increases exposure to bodily effluvia, but disgust does not usually inspire individuals to start or stop being a parent. Parents (N = 99) and controls (N = 50) completed self-report and behavioral avoidance measures. We used parent-specific items in disgust-sensitivity questionnaires, and child-related stimuli (soiled diapers) in a preferential-looking task. These included diapers with pre-weaning (yellow and runny) or post-weaning feces (adult-like). While the control group showed the expected behavioral avoidance, parents of weaning or weaned children showed almost no avoidance of stimuli depicting child-related or general bodily effluvia. These results suggest that parents habituated to disgust induced by feces in diapers, and that this had generalized to other bodily effluvia. Contrary to our expectations, parents of pre-weaning children showed similar disgust avoidance to the control group, even if they had older children. This could point to an adaptive response to reduce the risk of illness in young infants. After the sensitive milk-feeding stage, continuous exposure to their children’s bodily effluvia inoculates parents to disgust.

As public health researchers who have been documenting the health impacts of immigration enforcement for over 10 years, we see these immigration sweeps as public health emergencies. Even before the current administration’s recent expansion of immigration enforcement, research has long shown that intensive immigration enforcement operations affect people’s use of health care, ability to access resources to stay healthy, and their mental health and social relationships. Notably, these findings all come from before the current administration’s most recent expansion of immigration enforcement. It is fair to assume that the impacts of these current operations will be even greater.

ABSTRACT

This two-year follow-up study evaluated the sustained impact of the AIMS suicide prevention pathway, a structured, short-term intervention delivered by the Wellbeing Team (WBT) in a large Australian metropolitan mental health service. The retrospective cohort included 232 individuals who engaged with the WBT for at least 2 weeks and were discharged to primary care. Re-presentation to public mental health services was examined across three thresholds: any service contact (Condition 1), secondary care involvement (Condition 2) and sustained case management (Condition 3). At 24 months, 66.4% of participants had not re-presented to any public mental health service. Only 8.2% required further engagement with secondary services, and just 3.0% transitioned into longer-term case management. Survival analysis showed no statistically significant differences based on prior service contact, suggesting the AIMS pathway was broadly effective across diverse clinical histories. These findings indicate that AIMS supports not only crisis stabilisation but sustainable recovery. Its dual emphasis on clarity and growth is foundational: clarity through structured clinical actions, Assessment, Intervention, Monitoring and Step Up/Down (AIMS) and growth through guided discovery, values alignment, and peer support. The model is further strengthened by integration of the SAFE framework for dynamic safety planning and the HOPE framework for values-based recovery, both of which are embedded in the Safe Life Guide mobile application. By meeting individuals where they are and addressing both immediate safety and long-term purpose, AIMS offers a system-level reimagining of crisis care, one that reduces dependency, restores direction, and fosters life in motion.

ABSTRACT

Background

Resident-to-resident aggression (RRA) in long-term care settings is widespread with the potential for serious detrimental outcomes. However, few evidence-based training, intervention, and implementation strategies exist. The objective was to evaluate intervention process outcomes (knowledge), and proximal and distal outcomes (increased recognition, documentation, and reporting) in assisted living facilities.

Methods

Staff reported on RRA with respect to 930 residents (495 intervention and 435 usual care) from 14 New York assisted living facilities (7 per group). Data were collected at baseline, 6 and 12 months. Intervention site staff received training, while usual care staff did not. Knowledge outcomes were measured using two 10-item scales. Recognition and documentation for care planning were measured on an ongoing basis in real time, and longitudinal reporting of past two-week events through a structured interview. Mixed models were used to evaluate continuous knowledge variables. Outcome evaluation was conducted on an intent-to-treat basis using Poisson regressions for longitudinal count data measuring recognition/documentation and reporting.

Results

A total of 238, 263, and 217 staff attended Modules 1–3, respectively. There was a statistically significant increase in knowledge post-training, controlling for pre-training levels (estimated mean = 1.37, 95% CI, 1.11–1.62, p < 0.001 for Module 1 and estimated mean = 0.46, 95% CI, 0.21–0.70, p < 0.001 for Module 2). The program statistically significantly increased recognition and documentation of RRA in real time (estimated log mean = 4.34, 95% CI, 1.22–7.45, p = 0.006); there were 92 incidents reported by intervention group staff as contrasted with one in the usual care group. In terms of longitudinal reporting of events using a structured interview, a significant between-group difference was observed (estimate = 0.64, 95% CI, 0.18–1.09, p = 0.006).

Conclusions

The training intervention was demonstrated as effective in enhancing knowledge, recognition/documentation, and reporting of RRA in assisted living, replicating findings in nursing homes. It is recommended that this program be disseminated in long-term care facilities.

ABSTRACT

Objective

To identify predictors of loneliness and social isolation experienced by people with dementia at baseline and over time.

Methods

Using data from the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life (IDEAL) cohort study (2014–2018), we examined the prevalence and predictors of loneliness and social isolation in 1547 people with mild-to-moderate dementia over 24 months. Loneliness was measured using the six-item De Jong Gierveld Scale at baseline and 24 months and social isolation by the six-item Lubben Social Network Scale at baseline, 12 and 24 months. Generalised linear mixed effects models examined possible predictors of loneliness and social isolation including individual characteristics, depression, cognition, cultural participation, and neighbourhood characteristics.

Results

At baseline 35.4% of people with dementia were categorised as being lonely and 28.8% as socially isolated, increasing to 39.3% and 32.0% 2 years later. Over the 24-month follow-up none of these predictors were associated with changes in social isolation scores. Only perceived neighbourhood trust was associated with change in loneliness longitudinally. At baseline, depressive symptoms, living alone, smaller social networks and lower neighbourhood trust were associated with greater loneliness. Cross-sectionally, loneliness and lower cognitive ability were associated with greater social isolation, and greater cultural participation, more green and blue spaces nearby and higher neighbourhood trust were associated with lower social isolation scores.

Conclusions

The findings highlight the importance of the local environment and cultural participation for people with dementia. Enhancing interactions with the local neighbourhood through initiatives such as dementia friendly communities may help to reduce loneliness and social isolation.
