Abstract

Gym-based programming may be a useful strategy to help people re-establish consistency in their exercise routines and support long-term exercise engagement. However, the effectiveness of gym-based programs for behavior change is understudied. Using a prospective observational design, this study examines changes to participants’ workout class attendance during and after an 8-week body composition challenge at three group fitness studios, as well as individual factors that may moderate behavior change. Ninety-one individuals (82.4% female) who were enrolled in the challenge completed an online survey assessing key predictors of exercise behavior identified by prior physical activity research, including prior exercise engagement, instrumental beliefs, enjoyment motives, and integrated regulation. Class attendance data were provided by the studios for the 8 weeks before, during, and after the challenge. This study found that class attendance generally increased for all participants during the challenge, and especially for those who previously attended fewer classes per week. These increases generally were not sustained after the challenge, returning to the same or less than pre-challenge attendance levels. However, declines in class attendance were attenuated by higher enjoyment motives. Findings provide initial insight into the effectiveness of a gym-based body composition challenge for behavior change, suggesting that while such programs might temporarily increase exercise engagement, additional strategies may be needed to sustain behavior change after program completion. Future research using experimental designs is needed to support these findings and better understand who may benefit most from gym-based body composition challenges and gym-based programming more broadly.

Abstract

Swedish municipalities vary significantly in their commitment to preventing alcohol, narcotics, and tobacco related (ANT) problems. This study investigates the drivers of local policy development, focusing on the salience of ANT-related problems, municipal economic resources, and the political orientation of local governments. We analyzed pooled time-series cross-sectional data from 109 of Sweden’s 290 municipalities between 2011 and 2021. Local prevention efforts were measured using a composite Alcohol, Narcotics, and Tobacco Prevention Index. Key independent variables included indicators of problem salience (e.g., alcohol-related morbidity), municipal economic capacity, and the political orientation of the ruling coalition. We applied first-difference models with panel-corrected standard errors and panel-specific autoregressive terms to account for unobserved heterogeneity, temporal dynamics, and spatial dependence. Political orientation was the only statistically significant predictor of changes in local ANT-prevention efforts. A shift to left-wing governance was associated with a 4.2% increase in the ANT-index. Neither the salience of ANT-related harms nor municipal economic capacity had a significant effect. Our findings suggest that variation in local ANT-policy is less driven by problem burden or economic resources, but rather by political orientation.

Abstract

Childhood trauma, defined as violence against individuals under 18 years of age, affects 1,000,000,000 children globally, with neglect being the most common form. Such trauma is linked to various mental health issues and poor emotional regulation. This study aimed to validate the Childhood Trauma Screener (CTS) in a sample of Romanian children, adolescents, and college students, utilizing data from two separate samples: 1,221 first-year college students and 216 children and adolescents aged 8–16 years. We assessed validity using bivariate correlations, reliability using Cronbach’s alpha (.63–.75), and structure using confirmatory factor analyses. In the college student sample, higher childhood trauma scores were associated with lower self-compassion, rs = −.24–−.29, p < .001, and reappraisal use, rs = −.10–−.22, p < .001; higher suppression use for exposure to neglect, r = .16, p < .001, and overall trauma, r = −.11, p < .001; and more mental health difficulties, rs = .29–.31, p < .001. In the child and adolescent sample, higher childhood trauma scores were associated with increased emotional and behavioral difficulties, rs = .28–.45, p < .001, and poorer emotion regulation abilities, particularly lower emotion control and reduced emotional self-awareness, rs = .16–.43, p < .001. The results from both samples supported a two-factor model of abuse and neglect.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Outpatient treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN) often fails to reduce core symptoms like binge eating and purging, while inpatient care is costly and separates patients from their everyday environment. Day-patient treatment offers a middle ground by providing intensive daytime therapy with the opportunity to apply skills at home. This meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of day-patient treatment for BN and explored potential outcome moderators.

Methods

A systematic search yielded 1664 records, and 20 studies were included in the analysis. Outcome variables were changes in questionnaire scores on eating disorder psychopathology, binge eating frequency, purging frequency, and body mass index (BMI) from admission to discharge and, if available, from discharge to follow up.

Results

Eating disorder psychopathology decreased from admission to discharge with a large effect size and remained stable from discharge to follow up. Pooled effect sizes showed large reductions in binge eating and purging frequency from admission to discharge, whereas BMI did not change significantly.

Conclusion

Day-patient treatment effectively reduces eating disorder psychopathology, binge eating, and purging. As BMI seems to remain stable, this may be used to ease patients’ weight gain concerns.

ABSTRACT

Objective

To examine whether same-gender relationship (SGR) status predicts intergenerational estrangement, operationalized as emotional closeness as well as physical contact to parents, in Germany.

Background

The relationship to the family of origin can be a source of support or stress. It is important to understand how this relationship differs depending on whether a person is in an SGR. This can help identify problematic patterns and develop interventions tailored to the needs of this population.

Method

Analyses were based on 11 annual waves of the nationally representative German Family Panel (“pairfam”). A total of N = 12,926 participants (N = 122,036 observations) were included, with n = 237 participants reporting at least one SGR in their lifetime (n = 174 at the time of the interviews). Hypotheses regarding between and within person effects were tested using multilevel multivariate models.

Results

Participants who reported being in an SGR at least once in their lifetime or in proportionally more waves were less close to their fathers. The closeness to mothers was not related to participants’ SGR status.

Conclusion

Intergenerational relationships for people in SGRs are similar to those of the general German population. The differences that do exist mainly relate to a less close father-child relationship whereas relationships of mothers with their children appear to be more robust.
