ABSTRACT

Colonialism persists as a cultural, economic, political and psychological process. Colonial legacies embedded in Europe’s landscapes of colonial memory continue to shape how individuals and groups are perceived and positioned in present-day intergroup relations. Schools and textbooks reproduce these legacies, making it essential to examine how they represent the colonised Other and construct power relations. This study investigates how images related to colonialism in Finnish school textbooks construct identity and power. Drawing on the social representations approach (SRA) and employing visual rhetorical analysis (VRA), 484 images from 52 textbooks were analysed to identify constructions of identity through subject positions and power through ego–alter pairings. The analysis identified four visual rhetorical strategies—oppressing, agentic, chaotising and eye-gazing—and addressed four subject positions of the colonised Other: subjugated, autonomous, wreckable and spectacular. The findings demonstrate how images construct and circulate collective memories and group identities, revealing how colonial hierarchies are maintained through imagery in the educational context. Empirically, the study provides new insights into how the colonised Other is visually represented in school textbooks. Theoretically and methodologically, it introduces the ego–alter framework to visual analysis, demonstrates the utility of VRA for uncovering the power of imagery, contributes to postcolonial social psychology and provides tools to foster critical visual literacy and challenge colonial legacies.

ABSTRACT

Objective

To estimate the cumulative incidence of diagnostic conversion from psychotic unipolar depression to bipolar and psychotic disorders in Sweden.

Methods

Data from Swedish national registers were used to identify incident cases of psychotic unipolar depression between 2005 and 2011. To minimize the risk of misclassification, patients with a prior history of psychotic disorders, bipolar disorders, or manic episodes were excluded. Patients were followed until the first occurrence of a diagnostic change, death, or December 31, 2021. The cumulative incidence of diagnostic change was estimated using a competing risk model.

Results

A total of 7836 patients diagnosed with psychotic depression between 2005 and 2011 were included. The median age at index diagnosis of psychotic depression was 49 years (interquartile range: 35–65), and 56.7% were women. By the end of follow-up, 28.8% (95% CI: 27.7–29.9) of patients had undergone a diagnostic change to either a psychotic or bipolar disorder. The cumulative incidence of conversion was higher to psychotic disorders (17.5%, 95% CI: 16.6–18.4) than to bipolar disorders (14.7%, 95% CI: 13.8–15.5). In a sensitivity analysis requiring at least two recorded diagnoses separated by ≥ 1 year, the overall incidence of diagnostic change decreased to 19.0% (95% CI: 18.1–20.0), with corresponding rates of 10.0% (95% CI: 9.3–10.7) to psychotic disorders and 9.8% (95% CI: 9.1–10.5) to bipolar disorders. Diagnostic conversion was more common among younger individuals.

Conclusion

Approximately 20%–30% of patients diagnosed with psychotic depression in secondary care in Sweden are expected to receive a subsequent diagnosis of a bipolar or psychotic disorder within 17 years. This has important clinical implications, as prognosis and treatment strategies differ between these conditions. Further research is needed to identify risk factors for diagnostic conversion to improve early detection and management.

Abstract

This scoping review has explored the interventions and approaches used by teachers in mainstream (general education) primary schools (students aged 4–11) to support self-regulation skill development in the classroom. The review followed the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines for reporting and was guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute Framework for Scoping Reviews. Following screening and selection, 16 papers were identified; 14 of these examined practices with students under the age of seven. Data analysis revealed limited use of commercially available self-regulation intervention programmes in real-world classrooms. When specific intervention programmes were discussed, they were researcher-allocated rather than teacher-selected. This could indicate a research-to-practice gap, whereby available evidence-based self-regulation intervention programmes have not been adopted by classroom teachers. Instead the review identified 68 distinct strategies used by teachers to support students’ self-regulation. The most commonly used strategies were problem-solving opportunities, group games and classroom arrangement. Following thematic analysis, the strategies were mapped into five practice areas: teacher facilitation, activities, resources, relationships and physical environment. Teacher facilitation was the most prominent practice area, highlighting teachers’ central role in fostering student self-regulation. Many of the identified strategies overlapped with broader classroom management practices and existing teaching frameworks, suggesting the need for clearer frameworks to distinguish self-regulation-specific support strategies from general teaching practices. The data mapping provide a preliminary structure that, with further validation, could support future researchers and practitioners in disentangling the conceptual overlap present in this area of practice.

Abstract

Objectives

Team formulation is associated with better working relationships between staff and service users. However, there is a need for greater standardization of practice. We aimed to investigate the inter-rater reliability of the Team Formulation Quality Rating Scale (TFQS) and explore what aspects of team formulation practices were most frequently adhered to.

Method

Staff at nine acute mental health wards participated in team formulation sessions facilitated by Health Care Professions Council registered psychologists. Formulation sessions were audio recorded, and raters used recordings to complete the TFQS. At least two raters rated 19 team formulation sessions.

Results

The TFQS demonstrated excellent inter-reliability for the total scale (ICC = .926, 95% CI = .820 to .971) and moderate inter-rater reliability for subsection A (ICC = .660; 95% CI = .278 to .862) and subsection B (ICC = .733; 95% CI = .361 to .898). Overall, the items for ‘collaboration’ and ‘consideration of life events’ were rated better in terms of quality, compared with items relating to ‘close of meeting’ and ‘consideration of goals and values’ which tended to receive lower quality ratings.

Conclusion

The TFQS is a reliable tool for measuring quality of team formulation within inpatient settings and should be used in future research and clinical practice. Psychometric properties should be assessed across different clinical settings. Training and supervision should ensure that psychologists’ formulations incorporate a focus on the individual’s goals and values impacting problem development and resolution.

ABSTRACT

The literature on adolescents’ perspectives on growing up in kinship care is limited. The study aims to explore the lived experiences of adolescents in grandparent kinship care by examining how they respond to adversity, build support and exercise agency. The study recruited 22 grandparent–adolescent pairs in a large Korean city. Separate interviews were conducted with each adolescent, aged 12–17, and their caregiver at the adolescent’s home. The study uses interpretive thematic analysis to validate and triangulate themes and subthemes from the perspectives of adolescents and their caregivers. All adolescents experienced abandonment and had little to no contact with their parents, leading to feelings of disconnection, longing and stigma. For some, a grandparent’s dedication and the presence of other relatives acting as substitutes helped lessen the negative effects of abandonment. Even amid adversity, they showed varying levels of agency, demonstrating awareness of their situations, intentionality in their actions and taking steps towards a better future. The findings emphasize the agency of vulnerable youth. Korea’s underdeveloped foster care system and lack of coordinated services for grandparent kinship families leave them and their caregivers to navigate alone. Improved services for all grandparent kinship families, including guidance and meaningful support for adolescents at critical stages, could help strengthen their efforts to create a better future.

Feb 6th 2026, 04:54

This article examines how kisses and knocks in Marcel Proust’s The Way By Swann’s and Samuel Beckett’s Molloy serve as coping mechanisms to combat fear-driven insomnia. Since childhood, the Proustian narrator endures insomnia, finding solace either in his mother’s tender kiss or its cherished memories. In contrast, the adult eponymous protagonist in Samuel Beckett’s Molloy develops child-like anxiety about embodying his old mother’s neurodegenerative afflictions by sleeping in her bed. Molloy’s fear not only shapes the dynamics of his relationship with his mother but also the general maternal figure-son bond. This becomes evident when he absconds from Lousse’s home and rejects her care when she replaces her dead dog with Molloy. Although the Proustian narrator and Molloy have profoundly different relationships with their mothers, it is evident that fear underlies the emotional complexities of their mother-son bond. While the former is afraid of being abandoned by his mother, the latter is scared of mirroring his old mother’s neurodegenerative illness by sleeping in her bed. The fear-oriented mother-son relationship impacts their quality of sleep. Hence, the Proustian narrator uses his mother’s kiss as an antidote to insomnia. On the other hand, Molloy knocks on his sleeping mother’s head, emphasising the transactional nature of their relationship, thereby rejecting their genetic relationship as he is scared of inheriting her illness. Here, Mary Ainsworth’s pioneering research on developmental psychology helps us delve deeper into the emotional intricacies of the mother-son relationship that cause sleep disorders experienced by the Proustian narrator and Molloy. This paper aims to bridge gaps in the existing scholarship on Proust and Beckett by examining the impact of mother-son relationship on the protagonists’ quality of sleep and their coping mechanisms to combat insomnia.
