ABSTRACT

Objective

Although screening for bots and/or using costly panel services for recruiting participants online has become increasingly necessary, such efforts may no longer ensure the validity of data collected online. Newly released agentic AI models, such as the ChatGPT agent, have the ability to complete surveys relatively indistinguishably from humans.

Methods

The current paper outlines efforts that the body image, weight, and eating disorders (BIWED) lab has undergone to screen for and detect AI data completion reliably and validly.

Results

There are some tasks that ChatGPT agents do not perform identically to human responders (e.g., video tasks, online games, open-ended responses, and reCAPTCHA). We present the methods that have been the most successful at identifying AI agent survey completion.

Discussion

We discuss potential solutions, field-wide concerns, and future directions for the field more broadly.

<st>Background:</st>

Children with major trauma have better outcomes when treated in pediatric trauma centres, but population-based data on access to these centres in Canada are lacking. We aimed to estimate the proportion of children with major trauma who accessed a pediatric trauma centre in Canada (through direct transport or transfer) and compare access across provinces.

<st>Methods:</st>

We conducted a population-based cohort study of children (aged < 16 yr) who were admitted to hospital after a major trauma (Injury Severity Score > 12) in 9 Canadian provinces (excluding Quebec) from 2016 to 2021. We estimated the adjusted incidence of access to a pediatric trauma centre across provinces using robust Poisson regression and examined the effect of age and injury severity in subgroup analyses.

<st>Results:</st>

Of 3007 children with major trauma, 2335 (77.6%) were directly transported (n = 879, 29.2%) or transferred (n = 1456, 48.4%) to a pediatric trauma centre. Crude access to pediatric trauma centres was higher for younger children (80.9% among those aged 0 to 5 yr, 81.7% among those aged 6 to 12 yr, 69.9% among those aged 13 to 15 yr) and those with critical injuries (88.8%). Adjusted pediatric trauma centre access was lower in British Columbia (relative risk [RR] 0.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.63 to 0.74), the Atlantic provinces (RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.73 to 0.88), and Saskatchewan (RR 0.77, 95% CI 0.69 to 0.86) than Ontario, but was higher in Alberta (RR 1.06, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.10) and Manitoba (RR 1.14, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.19). Interprovincial differences were present across all subgroups (p < 0.0001).

<st>Interpretation:</st>

Across 9 Canadian provinces, 1 in 4 children with major trauma did not receive care in a pediatric trauma centre. These results suggest the opportunity for improvement in Canadian trauma systems to ensure that all children receive optimal injury care.

ABSTRACT

Reminiscent of person perception research involving central traits or the “horns”/negative halo effect, we tested the “evil through-and-through” (ETT) hypothesis—that is, that cues alluding to someone’s “evil” thoughts lead to the presumed predominance of antisocial behaviours and to disallowance or adverse construal of ostensibly prosocial or mundane behaviours. Canadian undergraduates (N = 189) rated how likely one of six targets (three “evil” and three “not evil”) had recently engaged in mildly antisocial, prosocial and morally neutral behaviours. Relative to “not evil” targets, participants assumed that “evil” targets engaged in more antisocial and mobility-related behaviours and fewer prosocial and self-care behaviours. Moreover, participants were more likely to attribute evil targets’ action or inaction across all these domains to “bad” reasons (e.g., character flaws, preoccupation, pretence). In short, the “evil” are othered, and there appears to be little they can do (or not do) to shift this perception.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Suicidal ideation represents a serious experience common in individuals with eating disorders. To inform screening and clinical assessment and advance theoretical work, the current study compared clinical characteristics between adult women with and without current suicidal ideation and examined whether binging, fasting, and purging behaviors are uniquely associated with suicidal ideation above and beyond existing psychiatric diagnoses.

Method

Data come from four studies conducted between 2000 and 2023 (N = 732) that evaluated current suicidal ideation in all participants. Participants completed diagnostic interviews assessing lifetime psychiatric diagnoses and current eating disorder diagnoses and behavioral symptom frequencies. Five hundred and fifty-three participants had DSM-5 eating disorders (54.6% bulimia nervosa, 15.0% purging disorder [PD], 28.2% other specified [excluding PD], 1.4% anorexia nervosa, and 0.7% binge-eating disorder).

Results

Individuals with current suicidal ideation had a greater prevalence of most psychiatric diagnoses and greater frequency of binging, fasting, and purging. Additionally, purging frequency was associated with current suicidal ideation independent of binging, fasting, and lifetime psychiatric comorbidities.

Discussion

Results support prior work suggesting that purging may fall on the self-harm continuum with nonsuicidal self-injury. Further, findings support screening for purging and suicide risk assessment in individuals with eating disorders.

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the distinctive dynamics of entitlement versus non-entitlement social programmes, focusing on how this distinction influences frontline workers’ management of access to social provisions. While much of the existing literature emphasises the macro-level impacts of these alternative policy designs, this study focuses on their operational dimensions by examining how frontline workers steer users’ access in each type of programme. Drawing on qualitative interviews with social workers in Israel, the findings reveal how this foundational design choice creates two starkly different operational contexts that, in turn, determine the nature of frontline discretion. By ensuring that resources meet demand, the entitlement framework creates conditions that allow for professional discretion aimed at upholding statutory rights. In contrast, the non-entitlement context is defined by fixed resource limits that generate inherent competition and uncertainty, which in turn compels frontline workers to develop rationing discretion. This shifts significant distributive decision-making from policymakers to the frontline, placing workers in a contradictory role as both advocates and rationers and intensifying disparities in access. The paper contributes to the literature on street-level bureaucracy and benefit take-up by demonstrating how a top-down feature of policy design fundamentally shapes the nature of frontline work and the realisation of social rights.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the role of some psychological variables associated with populist attitudes, specifically focusing on Conspiracy Mentality (CM) and Uncertainty Avoidance (UA). This approach allows for the examination of both belief-system orientations and cognitive predispositions in explaining the psychological underpinnings of populism. Although CM has been previously linked to populism, our research reveals new insights into the interaction between UA and political orientation. Using data from a representative sample of 1000 Italians, we show that CM is consistently associated with populist attitudes across the political spectrum. Whereas, UA’s impact is moderated by political orientation, influencing populist attitudes primarily among right-leaning individuals. These findings highlight the complex interplay of psychological factors and ideological leanings, contributing to the growing understanding of how epistemic and existential motivations might shape populist beliefs. This study advances the field by highlighting differentiated psychological patterns in populist attitudes, with UA emerging as especially salient among conservatives.

Abstract

The application of machine learning algorithms to daily diary data represents a valuable tool for improving dynamic prediction of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom escalations. This prospective, intensive longitudinal study aimed to evaluate whether combining baseline (static) and daily diary (dynamic) predictors with machine learning can help forecast clinically significant PTSD symptom increases among veterans. Participants were 74 recently discharged U.S. veterans (M
age = 33.5 years) who completed twice-daily diary surveys for up to 87 days via a mobile app, yielding 4,307 diary days. The outcome was a binary indicator of clinically significant daily PTSD symptom increase (> 1.0 standard deviation above a participant’s individual mean over the first 2 study weeks). Random forest models identified top predictors; LASSO regression estimated effect sizes among top predictors. Daily negative affect was the top predictive variable, OR = 1.33, retained in 100% of LASSO iterations. Daily depressed mood, OR = 1.35; anxious mood, OR = 1.15; and perceived stress, OR = 1.13, were also reliably retained. Variables involving alcohol, cannabis use, and baseline impulsivity were less robust but remained prominent predictors of PTSD symptom escalations. Post hoc interaction analyses showed that co-occurring high negative affect and anxiety yielded a > 55% probability of PTSD symptom escalation. The findings show that daily affective states, especially negative mood and stress, strongly predict PTSD symptom increases in veterans. Using machine learning and high-frequency tracking, advances in personalized, real-time PTSD care are possible. Findings support just-in-time interventions for when veterans need help most: in the moment.

ABSTRACT

Background

Anti-oppressive andragogy has recently gained prominence within international counselling and psychotherapy education, yet remains fragmented, largely conceptual and inconsistently applied. Scholars continue to call for frameworks that move beyond multicultural paradigms to dismantle systemic oppression across training environments.

Method

Using Critical Analytic Synthesis, we systematically reviewed and synthesised interdisciplinary literature across counselling and psychotherapy professions. We analysed approximately 150 peer-reviewed articles, engaging in an iterative process of construction, deconstruction and reconstruction to develop guiding principles for anti-oppressive andragogy.

Results

Thematic findings yielded eleven dynamic principles that address the process and praxis of anti-oppressive andragogy in counselling and psychotherapy education. These principles highlight the importance of reflexivity, power sharing, relational accountability and socioecological transformation.

Conclusion

Our findings suggest that anti-oppressive andragogy requires educators to interrogate dominant paradigms, centre those within margins, and engage in continuous critical reflection and community accountability. Educators can use these principles to challenge Eurocentric and assimilationist approaches, integrate decolonising practices and foster liberatory spaces that support empowerment and collective action. Policy and practice implications include revising curricula, gatekeeping, programme development, and professional standards to advance equity and justice for historically marginalised communities. Future research should build on this framework to explore practical applications, assess outcomes, and continue evolving anti-oppressive andragogical literature within counselling and psychotherapy education.
