ABSTRACT

Adults who experienced separation from parental care and resided in alternative care settings often face challenges transitioning to adulthood. This study explored perceived supports and barriers during this transition through an online survey of 962 care-experienced adults from over 20 countries. It combined demographic analysis and thematic analysis of qualitative responses. Key findings indicated that the reasons for separation from biological parents included parental death (29.9%), abandonment (22.2%), family instability (19.1%) and poverty (19.4%). The following three overarching themes emerged: (1) relationships and social networks, including the importance of supportive relationships and psychosocial services; (2) well-being and resilience, including how mental health challenges impacted functioning, while resilience led to growth; and (3) resources and opportunities, including how education and long-term support were vital, while financial difficulties and lack of resources hindered progress. Recommendations aimed to improve support systems for more stable transitions to adulthood are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Partnerships between researchers and consumers—specifically, people who use drugs in the context of our research co-production—can significantly enhance the relevance and impact of research. Funders increasingly emphasise the value of community-researcher collaborations, yet translating this commitment into effective practice remains challenging. This commentary draws from our experience in developing an application for a collaborative grant with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in Australia, focusing on issues that impact people who use drugs. We reflect on four key insights that emerged from the grant-writing process: (i) expectations and resources, highlighting the gap between the expectations of funding bodies, the way resourcing is used in academic contexts and the resources required for meaningful community involvement; (ii) grant success metrics, examining the disconnect between funding criteria and the realities of co-production; (iii) representation, addressing the challenges of ensuring equitable and authentic consumer participation; and (iv) sharing power, discussing how power dynamics between researchers and community members influence the research process. In conclusion, we propose that researchers must work with consumers to foster more equitable working relationships and ensure there are adequate resources to support meaningful collaborations. Funding bodies, in turn, need to reconsider success metrics and ensure that their processes are mindful of the practical requirements that are necessary to facilitate genuine, equitable partnerships between researchers and consumers.

ABSTRACT

Are public sector workers happier than their private sector counterparts? Recent research has found an association between public sector employment and happiness but leaves many questions unanswered. The major question that remains is why this association exists. Scholars have speculated that job-related characteristics like financial satisfaction and union status may be mediators, but this has not been established empirically. Our article provides the first empirical evidence of mediation in the relationship between public sector work and happiness. Using large sample data from the World Values Survey (n = 124,541), we find that financial satisfaction and union status both mediate the association between public sector work and happiness, with financial satisfaction being the dominant mediator in most cases. When the association between public sector work and subjective well-being is stratified by household income and country income, we find that the effects are strongest among low-income government workers in low-income countries.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Our study examines how fathers perceive and negotiate incongruities between their personal gender identities as men compared to their interpersonal gender role performances as fathers.

Background

Fatherhood today is shaped strongly by contradictions around gender expectations. Many fathers feel ambivalent toward traditional masculine norms that undermine their aspirations to be an involved parent. Understanding how fathers grapple with these contradictions can reveal much about the social-psychological processes underlying divisions of labor in different-gender partnerships.

Method

Our dataset consists of in-depth interviews with 36 Canadian fathers of young children. Guided by Symbolic Interactionist theory, we take a flexible coding approach to identify and analyze paradoxes around gender, work, and family in fathers’ narratives.

Results

We find that fatherhood is linked simultaneously to identity expansion—by facilitating men to integrate more caring masculinities into their self-concept and role constriction—through pulls into traditionally gendered work–family arrangements. In the face of this expansion and constriction, fathers make distinct identity-behavior compromises to bridge a perceptual divide between their gender identity construction and gender role performances.

Conclusion

We define compromised fatherhood as a social-psychological manifestation of gendered conflicts at the identity-behavior nexus and a discursive frame with which fathers account for these conflicts.

Abstract

While much is known about discriminatory behaviors in fields like the labor and housing markets, there is a dearth of empirical evidence on perceived acceptability of discrimination among the public. This study investigates this complex landscape by examining views on discrimination based on age, ethnicity, gender, and disability in Belgium through a web survey (N = 3000). Through four distinct vignettes based on housing and labor scenarios, we offer a deeper understanding of society’s tolerance toward discriminatory practices. Age surfaces as the most tolerated form of discrimination, highlighting deeply ingrained ageist ideologies that overshadow the value of experience and wisdom in older individuals. Conversely, gender discrimination is met with the least acceptance, reflecting ongoing struggles for gender equality. Our findings shed light on the influence of authoritarian sentiments, particularly through the lens of social dominance orientation (SDO), on the acceptance of discrimination across all vignettes. We found a significant interaction between SDO and ethnicity, with the effect of SDO on the acceptability of discrimination being more pronounced in vignettes involving ethnicity as discrimination ground. While acknowledging limitations, our research sets the stage for future exploration of the multifaceted nature of discriminatory views and the intersectional identities that shape them.

Public Significance Statement

This study shows that age-based discrimination is more socially accepted than other forms in Belgium, while gender bias is least tolerated. Acceptance of discrimination is linked to support for social hierarchies, and even personal experiences of discrimination can increase tolerance toward it. Understanding these patterns can help policymakers design more effective strategies to counter prejudice and advance equality in the workplace and housing sector.

Three reports are published today, bringing together the different perspectives of disabled people and social workers. All point to converging challenges of escalating demand, workforce instability and too little funding. Two of the papers explore the impact of changes to Self-Directed Support (SDS) personal budgets – specifically funding for SDS Option 1 direct payments – based on surveys of disabled people and carers, and social workers respectively. Professional body for social work, Social Work Scotland, has then brought these together in a third report which concludes that demand for support continues to grow in scale, complexity, and urgency – driven by demographic change, inequality, and unmet need.
