<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align:left;color:#999;font-size:11px;font-weight:bold;line-height:15px;">Jan 28th 2026, 11:16</div>
<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<h2>Objective</h2>
<p>This study explores how communication between parents and children was experienced by adults who were placed in out-of-home care (OOHC) when they were children, and mothers who had a child in OOHC. The mothers were not related to the adult children.</p>
<h2>Background</h2>
<p>The quality and process of contact shapes experiences for young people in OOHC and mothers of children in OOHC. Research has primarily focused on young people’s outcomes, with studies on mothers of children in OOHC only beginning to emerge, highlighting the need for a systemic lens that considers both perspectives.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>Five mothers with a child in OOHC were interviewed. Six adults who were in OOHC as children, unrelated to the mothers, were also interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.</p>
<h2>Results/Findings</h2>
<p>The mothers and adults placed in OOHC as children often sought to connect with their children or parents, respectively. However, their past traumas and the setup of contact processes significantly disrupted communication. Participants’ communication evolved over time as they renegotiated their relationship.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>As they developed an understanding of their past experiences of lack of care, the way the mothers and adult children communicated with their child or parent, respectively, evolved. The distance imposed in contact was often described as protective by the adult children and harmful by the mothers.</p>
<h2>Implications</h2>
<p>Practitioners should consider attachment, developmental stage and the changing life situations of both birth parents and young people with OOHC experiences to make sense of their interacting hopes for communication.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><p>This article compares William Carlos Williams’s short story ‘The Use of Force’ (1938) and Tess Gerritsen’s novel <i>The Surgeon</i> (2001) to explore how biomedical care can slide into coercion and how clinical spaces oscillate between sanctuary and sacrilege. Building on Michel Foucault’s formulation of clinical vision, together with Julia Kristeva’s account of abjection and René Girard’s sacrificial theory, I propose a three-strand analytic—power/knowledge, Gothic embodiment and parareligious affect—supplemented by an ecoGothic perspective that scales clinical violence from flesh to environment. Through close reading, the essay shows how Williams’s intimate house call converts beneficent intention into brute force, while Gerritsen’s medical thriller grotesquely weaponises medical expertise: the gaze that sees also dominates, and instruments of cure—tongue depressor, spoon, scalpel—become ritual implements that breach bodily borders. Attending to gendered vulnerability and trauma poetics, the analysis situates Gerritsen’s femicidal surgeries within patriarchal control and foregrounds the counter-agency of Jane Rizzoli and Catherine Cordell. Placing a modernist vignette beside a 21st century medical thriller, the article maps both continuities and ruptures in the ontological, epistemic and ethical stakes of clinical authority, tracing how sacrificial logic, secular priesthood and toxic ecologies persist across periods. The contribution is twofold: to Gothic studies, by clarifying medicine’s parasacral volatility and its ecological imaginaries; and to bioethics and the medical humanities, by articulating a normative claim that only practices disciplined by consent, narrative reciprocity and institutional accountability can sustain the secular covenant of care. Otherwise, curative ritual hardens into authorised brutality, and knowledge is purchased through a sacrificial economy in which <i>cura</i> collapses into cruelty. Such findings refine debates on clinical paternalism, narrative ethics and trauma representation in literature.</p>

<p><p>
<st>Objective</st>
</p>
<p>Relatively little research has examined the correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in children. To address this gap, we sought to identify demographic, psychological and parent-related factors associated with increased SI and NSSI in this population.</p>
<p>
<st>Method</st>
</p>
<p>Participants were 697 children (ages 7–11; 62.6% Non-Hispanic White; 51.9% boys) and their mothers recruited from the community. Information was collected regarding children’s histories of SI and NSSI, demographics, children’s and mothers’ psychopathology, mothers’ prior suicide attempt and parenting styles.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>SI and NSSI were relatively common in this age range, with lifetime rates of 12.6% and 6.3%, respectively. Rates of both outcomes were higher in boys, Hispanic youth, children with histories of major depression or post-traumatic stress disorder, children with higher levels of internalising and externalising symptoms and children of mothers with histories of agoraphobia. Additional relations were specific to SI (child history of generalised anxiety disorder, mother’s prior suicide attempt and maternal warmth) or NSSI (minority race, mother history of panic disorder and maternal authoritarianism).</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Results provide evidence for correlates of SI and NSSI in children spanning demographic, psychopathology-related and parenting variables, which may further our understanding of which children are at greatest risk for self-injurious thoughts and behaviours.</p>

<p><p>
<st>Objectives</st>
</p>
<p>Despite recent regulatory efforts, high-powered magnets are a frequent cause of injury in children. The goal of this study is to inform advocacy and prevention measures by describing socioeconomic status (SES)-associated differences among children with high-powered magnet exposures.</p>
<p>
<st>Study design</st>
</p>
<p>In this multicentre, retrospective cohort study from 25 US children’s hospitals from 2017 to 2019, patients aged 0–21 years with a confirmed high-powered magnet ingestion or insertion were included. Children were grouped into SES classifications based on zip code of residence using the Childhood Opportunity Index (COI). Clinical characteristics and outcomes were compared between children with low (0–40) and high (41–100) COI scores.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>Of 594 patients with a high-powered magnet exposure, 74.6% of cases occurred among children with high COI scores. Children with a low COI score were less likely to have been directly supervised by a caregiver at the time of exposure (48.6% vs 55.4%, p=0.15) but more likely to undergo both endoscopy and surgery (9.3% vs 2.9%, p=0.001), require readmission (5.4% vs 1.6%, p=0.04), and have a longer mean length of stay (4.4 days vs 3.3 days, p=0.007).</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Children with a higher SES are more likely to have a high-powered magnet exposure, but children with a lower SES require more invasive procedures for treatment, longer stays in the hospital and more readmissions. As exposure risk is proportional to access, the safest way to prevent injuries is to remove high-powered magnets from any environment where children may be present.</p>

<p><p>
<st>Background</st>
</p>
<p>Instagram hosts pro-tobacco content that may reach youth despite existing US federal and platform-specific policies designed to restrict such content. This study assessed compliance with platform-specific and federal tobacco control policies among leading tobacco brands on Instagram.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>This study collected 1654 Instagram posts between October 1, 2022, and September 29, 2024, from the main page and tagged sections of six leading tobacco brand accounts (Vuse, Lost Mary, ZYN, Velo, Lucky Strike, Winston). Posts were coded for compliance with Instagram, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) policies, including age-gating, financial disclosure, presence of health warnings and restricted URLs.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>69.4% (n=1148) of posts contained <i>URL links</i> to commercial tobacco websites. Unrestricted access to tobacco content was observed among 46.7% (n=772) of posts. <i>Influencers or celebrities</i> appeared in 19.2% (n=317) of posts, of which 41.6% (n=132) of posts did not disclose a financial relationship between the brand and the influencer or celebrity. 72.6% (n=1200) of posts had a <i>health warning label,</i> while 41.3% (n=683) of posts had an <i>age warning label</i>.</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Leading tobacco brands on Instagram often violated platform and federal policies, particularly those concerning age verification, sponsorship disclosure and health warning labelling. Stronger enforcement by Instagram, the FTC and the FDA may be needed to reduce youth exposure to tobacco marketing on social media.</p>
