ABSTRACT

Social touch has the power to alleviate physical pain and emotional distress. Here we ask whether touch is perceived as more effective than words in comforting interactions, and whether its effects are influenced by interaction dynamics, individual preferences for touch, propensity to trust, and trait empathy. Across two studies, participants (n = 199) were exposed to comics depicting comforting interactions between two friends, one experiencing emotional distress and the other providing comfort either verbally or through touch. Results suggest that the comforter’s trustworthiness and the interaction positivity increase when the comforting modality matches the one that observers would likely use in their friendships. Tactile interactions and observers’ high trait empathy enhance emotional empathy. Social touch therefore emerges as especially impactful in eliciting empathy, yet it may also carry the risk of enhancing personal distress for comforters. Please refer to the Supporting Information section to find this article’s community and social impact statement.

Jan 26th 2026, 06:22

<st>Objective</st>

To systematically review the instrumental and discursive barriers and facilitators that have influenced standardised packaging (SP) policies for tobacco, emphasising contextual, institutional, legal, political and rhetorical dynamics.

<st>Data sources</st>

We searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science for peer-reviewed studies published in English between January 2005 (post-Framework Convention on Tobacco Control enforcement) and October 2025. Search terms combined tobacco and packaging concepts (eg, ‘tobacco’, ‘standardised packaging’) with policy process terms (eg, ‘barrier’, ‘facilitator’). Reference lists of included studies were also screened.

<st>Study selection</st>

Of 967 records identified, 41 met the inclusion criteria. Eligible studies examined barriers or facilitators to any phase of the SP policy process (preadoption, implementation or postimplementation). Screening was conducted by one reviewer and verified by two others; discrepancies were resolved by consensus.

<st>Data extraction and quality appraisal</st>

Data were extracted into a framework integrating the Policy Dystopia Model, Multiple Streams Theory and Strategic Action Typologies. Extracted elements included instrumental (action-based) and discursive (argument-based) strategies, policy stage, actor type, design/data collection methods. Quality was assessed using an adapted Critical Appraisal of Research Evidence tool.

<st>Data synthesis</st>

Industry-led legal, economic and framing strategies were consistent barriers, while governmental legal preparedness, coordination and strategic framing enabled progress, mainly in high-income countries. Evidence on low and middle-income countries and postimplementation processes remains scarce. Research relies heavily on secondary or descriptive designs, underscoring the need for longitudinal, process-oriented analyses.

<st>Conclusions</st>

SP success depends on navigating political, institutional and discursive arenas as much as technical design. Strengthening legal capacity, coordination and framing is vital to sustain implementation globally.

ABSTRACT

Since 2017, social housing activists from the Reclaim the City movement have occupied and repaired a formerly abandoned, apartheid-era hospital in Woodstock, one of Cape Town’s rapidly gentrifying central neighborhoods. In the face of recurring threats of mass eviction and a lack of affordable, well-located social housing alternatives, it has become Cape Town’s most prominent and politically contested building occupation. This article focuses on a co-design initiative that has emerged from within the occupation, in collaboration with allied community architects and civil society facilitators. In the article, I argue that the initiative added another negotiating tool and layer of resistance for creatively opposing vilification, discrimination, and displacement. Foregrounding the initiative’s co-designed architectural models, collective imaginaries, and operative scales, the article critically interrogates how the movement’s co-design initiative complemented ongoing repair practices, and how and whether these complementary activist repertoires could create viable avenues for improved living conditions within this politically hard-won activist space. The article contributes to urban anthropological research on architecture, design, and movement practices aimed at the broader goal of rebuilding and repairing existing communities in the context of Cape Town’s historically most divided socio-spatial segregation. Throughout the article, I discuss “design” and “repair” as urban political sensibilities, distinct yet connected modalities of creative resistance, that operated as complementary tactics in defense of the occupation.

ABSTRACT

Background

Long Covid-19 (LC) patients have substantial treatment and care needs, yet research has shown that the majority of them experience healthcare access barriers. While qualitative studies indicate socio-economic and demographic access inequalities among LC patients, quantitative evidence remains limited. This study aims to assess socio-economic inequalities in healthcare access among LC patients in Austria, focusing on self-perceived barriers, facilitators and unmet healthcare needs.

Methods

Retrospective cross-sectional data were collected from adult LC patients through online and paper-based surveys (10-12/2024), following a prior qualitative study. The survey assessed 47 barriers and 10 facilitators based on Levesque’s ‘access to care’ framework, along with unmet healthcare needs overall and related to general practitioner (GP), specialist and hospital care. Overall barrier and facilitator scores were calculated. Inequalities related to gender, age, urbanicity, health-related background through training/employment, complementary private health insurance, and economic situation were examined in linear, logistic and ordered logistic regressions, controlling for clinical and demographic variables.

Results

Overall, 433 LC patients completed the survey. Participants living in urban areas, with complementary private health insurance, or in a good economic situation reported fewer barriers, reflected in statistically significantly lower overall barrier scores. Income-related inequalities emerged particularly in relation to barriers in GP care, including not being taken seriously, attribution of symptoms to mental health conditions, burdensome costs, short consultation times, and limited availability of telemedicine or home visits. Facilitator scores, in contrast, did not differ by socio-economic factors. Living in a rural area was associated with a higher probability of unmet healthcare needs related to GP and specialist care. A poor economic situation was associated with a higher probability of reporting unmet needs related to specialist and hospital care. No evidence of gender-based inequalities was found.

Conclusions

Our findings reveal enhanced inequalities in LC healthcare access in an otherwise universal healthcare system. Contrary to prior research, we find income-related inequalities in GP access. Future policy efforts in Austria should consider that central case management through GP care may not be the most optimal set-up, especially without improved information, training, support and specialist referral opportunities.

Patient or Public Contribution

The design of the survey and the hypotheses on healthcare access barriers and facilitators were directly informed by qualitative interviews from previous work with long Covid-19 (LC) patients, who shared their lived experiences with diagnosis, treatment and navigating the healthcare system. Additionally, LC patients piloted the survey before its launch and provided feedback. Representatives of patient LC groups and individual patients contributed to participant recruitment by sharing study materials within their networks.

The UK government has launched a consultation on introducing an Australian-style ban on social media for under-16s. The proposal is framed as a bold response to rising concerns about young people’s mental health, online abuse and exposure to harmful content. At first glance, a ban sounds straightforward: keep children away from platforms that can cause harm. But as someone who has spent years researching young people’s digital lives, relationships and wellbeing, I believe that a blanket ban risks misunderstanding both the problem and the solution.

Jan 26th 2026, 00:53

Abstract

Background

Limited attention has been given to conceptualizing and examining what can help parents of adult children with mental illness recover from the impact of the illness on their relationship with their adult child. The concept of differentiation can serve as a means of exploring their recovery.

Objectives

To examine changes in the parents’ differentiation with the adult child and how differentiation occurred.

Method

Personal interviews were conducted with 10 parents who are members of an association for family members of individuals with mental illness in Israel. A thematic analysis method was used.

Results

After the onset of the mental illness, the parents experienced negative emotions and a process of mourning, and they struggled with emotional regulation. Over the years, the relationships with the adult child changed due to emotional and perceptual shifts regarding the mental illness and by learning how to adjust their interactions.

Conclusions

The concept of differentiation can help assess the challenges parents face and focus on intrapersonal and interpersonal change-promoting processes in the relationship with the adult child.

Implications

Interventions should help parents overcome challenges after the illness begins and in developing differentiation in the relationship with the adult child to advance their recovery.

Abstract

Introduction

This study aimed to translate and validate the telephone interview for cognitive status (TICS) and the mini montreal cognitive assessment (Mini MoCA) for use in older Thai adults and to compare their diagnostic validity for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia.

Materials and methods

A total of 149 participants—51 cognitively normal (CN), 49 with MCI, and 49 with dementia—were enrolled. Diagnoses were based on DSM-5 criteria and the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), determined by a senior geriatric neurologist. Participants also completed the MMSE-2, MoCA, NPI-Q, and ADL assessments, administered by certified psychologists and a geriatric nurse. The TICS and Mini MoCA were administered by two independent, blinded clinicians within four weeks of the initial evaluation. Test-retest reliability was assessed after two weeks. Validity and reliability analyses included content and construct validity, and inter-rater/test-retest reliability.

Results

Mean age and education were comparable across groups. Both TICS and Mini MoCA scores correlated significantly with standard cognitive and functional measures. Test-retest and inter-rater reliability were excellent (ICC = 0.933 and 0.995 for TICS; 0.918 and 0.998 for Mini MoCA). For discriminating CN from dementia, sensitivity/specificity were 81.3%/81.2% (AUC = 0.883) for TICS and 87.5%/89.6% (AUC = 0.958) for Mini MoCA. For CN vs. MCI, Mini MoCA (AUC = 0.755) performed slightly better than TICS (AUC = 0.693). Average administration times were 8.7 and 4.4 min, respectively.

Conclusions

TICS and Mini MoCA are valid, reliable tools for cognitive screening in older Thai adults, with Mini MoCA showing slightly superior performance.
