Implications of the UK Supreme Court decision</a>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><p>On 16 April 2025, the Supreme Court of the UK ruled that when interpreting the UK’s Equality Act (2010)—the Act of the UK Parliament that details protections against unlawful discrimination—the terms ‘man’, ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ pick out ‘biological sex’ (defined in the Court’s ruling as ‘the sex of a person at birth’) and not also ‘certificated sex’ (defined in the Court’s ruling as ‘the sex attained by the acquisition of a Gender Recognition Certificate’). Some have argued that the Court’s decision represents a significant setback for trans people, while others have welcomed the perceived clarity the decision has provided. The decision has had, and will continue to have, wide impact, such as on the lawful operation of single-sex spaces and services in the UK. Scrutiny of the Court’s judgement is therefore warranted. The judgement was based on an interpretation of what Parliament intended in the Equality Act, but there are unresolved questions: (1) Is the Court’s interpretation of what Parliament intended the terms ‘man’, ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ to refer to correct? (2) Was the Court’s ruling made in a sufficiently just way? With these questions in mind, this article has two main aims. First, to summarise the Court’s recent decision and its social impacts. Second, to stress the importance of procedural justice in evaluating this verdict. This article thereby presents a preliminary case for the adequate consultation of all relevant stakeholders in potentially contentious legal decisions—especially where significant practical consequences for different social groups are likely.</p>

Measuring What We Really Care About in Sexual and Reproductive Health</a>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>The well-being of individuals and communities is increasingly recognized as a core objective of economic and global development policies and programs. However, existing measures of well-being neglect sexual and reproductive experiences, which are core dimensions of people’s lives. While there has been increasing attention to the concept of sexual well-being, measures of sexual and reproductive health are predominantly deficit-based and ignore whether people are having positive experiences. To consider the development of a measure of sexual and reproductive well-being, a multidisciplinary and geographically diverse group of experts was convened. Outcomes of this meeting included endorsement of a draft definition of sexual and reproductive well-being, demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to the development of a measure capturing this construct, and delineation of core considerations in the measure development process. These included considering the diversity of normative and political contexts around sexuality and reproduction, and the critical nature of meaningful community engagement when developing this measure. A pathway for measuring development was defined, with the goal of creating a concise measure assessing people’s holistic experiences of sexuality and reproduction that can draw attention to and monitor the extent to which people are having the sexual and reproductive lives they wish to have.</p>

<p><p>All of this integration is highly profitable for AI companies. The more AI is woven into public infrastructures and business operations, the more indispensable these firms become, and the harder they are to challenge or regulate. Integration into the defence sector for example, with the development of autonomous weapons could simply make a firm too big to fail, if a country’s military security depended on it. And when things go wrong, the asymmetry of expertise between governments and citizens on one side, and AI developers on the other, simply increases the overall reliance on the very firms whose systems created the problems in the first place.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><p>
<st>Objectives</st>
</p>
<p>Work stress is a threat to the well-being of nurses in China and also globally, and many studies have been conducted on the risk factors for stress symptoms. However, research on the process and mechanism between work environment risk factors and perceived stress symptoms among nurses remains limited. This study aimed to examine the direct and indirect relationships between nurse-rated structural empowerment, professional competence, thriving and nurses’ perceived stress symptoms.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Design</st>
</p>
<p>This was a cross-sectional correlational study.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Setting and participants</st>
</p>
<p>This study was conducted between April and October 2023, and 2172 nurses at three general hospitals in a Chinese province were recruited.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Method</st>
</p>
<p>A questionnaire that included demographic information, the Conditions of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire, the Nurse Professional Competence Scale, the Thriving at Work Scale and one factor from the Psychosomatic Health Aspects Questionnaire that measured perceived stress symptoms was used. The PROCESS macro (model 4) with a parallel mediation model and bootstrapping tests was conducted to examine the direct and indirect relationships of structural empowerment, professional competence and thriving at work on perceived stress symptoms.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Result</st>
</p>
<p>The regression analysis showed that structural empowerment, professional competence and thriving at work were negatively related to stress symptoms (β=–0.42, p<0.001; β=–0.06, p=0.009; β=–0.28, p<0.001, respectively), after controlling for marital status (yes/no), clinical experience and night shift (three groups). The results of the bootstrap analysis with a parallel mediator model revealed indirect relationships between structural empowerment and stress symptoms through both professional competence and thriving at work (β=–0.033 (95% CIs –0.059 to –0.009); β=–0.164 (95% CIs –0.204 to –0.126), respectively).</p>
<p><br>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Structural empowerment was related to stress symptoms both directly and indirectly via professional competence and thriving at work. The findings suggest that managers should alleviate nurses’ stress symptoms through measures aimed at providing access to empowering structures, strengthening professional competence and promoting thriving at work.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<h2>Objectives</h2>
<p>Previous meta-analyses have shown that loneliness is associated with poor health (<i>r</i> = −.35) and sleep challenges (<i>r</i> = .29). However, that work is confounded by the inclusion of unhealthy populations, with chronic conditions, such as HIV, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and severe mental illness. This pre-registered meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD42019119135) examined whether loneliness is linked to poorer health in healthy populations.</p>
<h2>Design</h2>
<p>Meta-analysis.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>PsycINFO, ERIC, PubMed, and Web of Science were searched for articles before January 2024 to examine the association between loneliness and health outcomes (categorized as general health, physical health [functional disability], sleep function, sensory acuity, and health service use) for healthy samples.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>A total of 167 articles (303,643 participants; 334 effect sizes; 158 independent samples) from 36 countries were included in the meta-analysis. Loneliness is associated with worse health for healthy populations (<i>r</i> = −.22), with the largest effect (<i>r</i> = −.23) for general health. Loneliness was not related to health service use for healthy populations. Heterogeneity was substantial, with only 7.2% of the total variance attributable to sampling error, indicating that over 92% of the variability in effect sizes reflected true differences across studies.</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>Higher loneliness was associated with poorer health for healthy people. There are limited studies using (1) objective measurements of health outcomes in relation to loneliness, and (2) studies exploring the association among young people, highlighting a need for more work in those areas.</p>

<p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>Failure to attain important work-related goals is a frequent source of negative emotion for employees, and research has identified supportive management as central in shaping work-related outcomes following failure. However, there is limited research examining the specific behaviors that managers can use to respond to employees’ negative affect. Drawing on the theory of interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) et al., 2009, we examine how specific IER strategies employed by managers influence employees’ goal adjustment and turnover intentions. Across two experimental vignette studies (<i>N</i> = 1148), we test a mediation model in which employees’ negative affect and trust in the manager act as parallel mechanisms linking IER strategies to behavioral intentions. In Study 2, we additionally investigate whether regulatory focus moderates these indirect effects. We conceptualize regulatory focus as a proximal self-regulatory frame that shapes how individuals interpret and respond to goal failure. Our findings show that trust, more than affect, serves as the key mediator linking IER strategies to behavioral intentions. Regulatory focus did not moderate these paths. This study advances understanding of the relational dynamics underlying specific IER strategies and highlights the central role of trust in managing employee responses to goal failure.</p>

<div style="font-family:Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#494949;text-align:justify;font-size:13px;">
<p><p>
<st>Objectives</st>
</p>
<p>To investigate, in a prospective cohort study, the association between cognitive impairment and cardiovascular disease (CVD), to quantify the extent to which uncontrolled risk factors mediate this association, and to explore whether the mediation effect varies across sex and age groups.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Design</st>
</p>
<p>Prospective cohort study.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Setting</st>
</p>
<p>UK Biobank, a large population-based cohort study in the UK.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Participants</st>
</p>
<p>A total of 152 155 participants without prevalent CVD or dementia at baseline were included. The mean age was 56.3±8.2 years, and 44.0% were male.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Primary outcomes</st>
</p>
<p>Cardiovascular death and composite cardiovascular outcomes, assessed using Cox proportional-hazards models and mediation analyses.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>During a median follow-up of 13.03–13.87 years, 1474 cardiovascular deaths and 21 518 composite cardiovascular outcomes were recorded. Participants with cognitive impairment (n=23 146; 15.2%) exhibited higher proportions of lifestyle, metabolic and psychological risks (p<0.001), except alcohol consumption. Cognitive impairment was associated with a 21% increased risk of cardiovascular death (HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.37) and a 5% higher risk of composite cardiovascular outcomes (HR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.09). Mediation analyses indicated that 11.30%, 9.10% and 8.25% of the association between cognitive impairment and cardiovascular death were mediated by uncontrolled glucose, alcohol consumption and depression, respectively. Similarly, 17.50%, 12.39% and 11.98% of the association with composite cardiovascular outcomes were mediated by depression, anxiety and alcohol consumption, respectively. These mediating effects varied by sex and were more pronounced in females.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Cognitive impairment is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular death and composite cardiovascular outcomes. Uncontrolled lifestyle, cardiometabolic and psychological risk factors partially mediate this association, highlighting the importance of comprehensive management to improve cardiovascular prognosis in this population.</p>

The company has faced legal scrutiny in recent years after several people, including at least two teenagers, died by suicide after interacting with ChatGPT.
