Early adolescence is a pivotal time for academic development; however, the vast majority of research on reading and math development within a multitiered system of support has been conducted among elementary students. Using triannual (Fall, Winter, Spring) academic screening data, we examined the transactional development of reading and math skills among sixth and seventh grade students (N = 1,693) using Bayesian longitudinal structural equation modeling (SEM). We find equivocal support for four of the five types of longitudinal SEMs tested (dual-change, linear change, proportional change, latent curve with structured residuals, and random-intercepts cross-lagged models). Stable between-person differences in math and reading (i.e., latent/random intercepts) are strongly correlated regardless of the modeling approach (r = .70–.77), consistent extensive prior research in this area. However, correlated growth processes at the between-person level and within-person transactional relations of math and reading were inconsistent across models. We discuss the practical implications of these findings as well as the methodological issues with detecting within-person instructional response in triannual screening. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

Family therapy has been slowly but steadily growing on the African continent. Considering Africa’s rich yet complex economic, political, and sociocultural history, it is essential for family therapy practitioners to integrate social justice (SJ) principles into their research, training, and practice of family therapy. By doing so, we can help foster more inclusive, culturally responsive, and meaningful support for the historically underrepresented communities of African descent. More importantly, we recommend that addressing SJ issues in the practice of family therapy in Africa be rooted in Afrocentric frameworks of care and practice. Drawing on existing literature, we introduce the African-Centered Wellness Model as a foundational framework for advancing socially just family therapy with African families. To demonstrate how the framework translates into clinical practice, two authors present case vignettes from their clinical work. A discussion of implications for integrating the principles of the model into research, training, and practice follows.

Background and objectives

Loneliness is a significant public health concern affecting over a quarter of older adults worldwide. Emerging research suggests that artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled social robots may offer a viable alternative for providing a new form of social support and reducing loneliness. This meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of AI-enabled social robots in reducing loneliness among older adults and examines the conditions under which these interventions are most effective.

Research Design and Methods

A systematic search was conducted through October 2024. Effect sizes from 19 studies (N = 1,083) were synthesized using robust variance estimation (RVE) in meta-regression. Moderation analyses examined how social robots’ effectiveness differs by contextual factors such as participants’ backgrounds and studies’ characteristics.

Results

Our findings indicated that social robots significantly reduced loneliness among older adults. However, studies with control groups indicate a higher effect size. Moreover, greater reductions in loneliness are observed among individuals in institutional settings compared to those living independently. In addition, stronger intervention effects reported in Japan and Turkey than in the United States. However, age, cognitive status, robot type, duration of intervention, and year of publication did not significantly influence intervention effectiveness.

Discussion and Implications

Findings underscore the potential of social robots as an effective and scalable approach for addressing loneliness among older adults, particularly within institutional care environments. Policymakers, gerontologists, and care providers should consider integrating AI-enabled social robots into existing care frameworks, emphasizing culturally sensitive and inclusive implementation strategies.

This commentary highlights the potential of case–control studies to strengthen the evidence base for injury prevention in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We argue that these designs are especially valuable in information-poor settings and across the full spectrum of injury topics—both unintentional and intentional. Our aim is to foster LMIC-led collaborations that build research capacity, support rigorous local studies and generate evidence that can inform policy and practice. We invite interested researchers to join this initiative.

ABSTRACT

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted healthcare workers’ mental health worldwide. Although increased stress, anxiety, and burnout are well documented, there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of workplace interventions such as infection prevention and control (IPC) and personal protective equipment (PPE) training in mitigating these effects.

Aim

To examine the association between IPC training, PPE training, and consistent adherence to safety protocols with self-reported mental health outcomes among healthcare workers in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

This study analyzed data from 12,727 healthcare workers who responded to a 2021 Statistics Canada crowdsource survey. Logistic regression models assessed the relationship between mental health status (same/better vs worse compared to pre-pandemic) and three predictors: sufficient IPC training, sufficient PPE training, and consistent protocol adherence, controlling for demographic and occupational factors.

Results

Adequate IPC and PPE training, along with consistent adherence to protocols, were significantly associated with better self-reported mental health outcomes across healthcare worker groups. Regional differences and survey design limitations affecting generalizability are acknowledged.

Conclusions

Basic workplace interventions such as IPC and PPE training and adherence to safety protocols may help protect healthcare workers’ mental health during public health crises. Policymakers should prioritize these feasible, low-cost measures to mitigate pandemic-related psychological distress.

This article builds on existing research by examining the policy practices of community social workers who served people affected by urban regeneration in Hong Kong. Based on semi-structured interviews with eighteen practitioners—including frontline workers, team leaders, and service managers with 4 to over 20 years of experience—the study identifies that social workers’ policy practices are often guided solely by market-led ideas, or occasionally by an additional focus on sustainable urban regeneration. The findings support previous claims that social workers are not always sensitive to the effects of neoliberal urban development. Moreover, the study reveals that motivational and facilitative factors influence not only social workers’ engagement in policy practice, but also the policy ideas shaping their work. These insights contribute to discussions about how neoliberalism constrains social work practice and show possibilities for moving beyond these limitations.
