ABSTRACT

Background

Observational investigations have reported correlations between brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) and dementia, as well as dysfunctions in brain resting-state functional networks in dementia patients. However, the causal nature of these relationships remains largely unknown.

Methods

Herein we applied bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomisation analysis to infer the causal relationships between 587 IDPs (N = 33 224) and 191 brain resting-state functional networks (n = 34 691) with dementia and its sub-types (AD, PDD, FTD and DLB; n = 3024–216 771) using genetic variants-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) as instrumental variables.

Results

The forward MR identified 14 IDP phenotypes that are causally related to the risk of dementia, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Lewy body dementia (DLB). For example, a decrease in the thickness of the right rostral middle frontal cortex was strongly associated with an increased risk of dementia. The reverse MR analysis revealed significant associations between 153 IDP phenotypes and the risk of FTD and DLB and between 73 rs-fMRI phenotypes and the risk of dementia and AD. For instance, a higher risk of DLB was associated with a decrease in FA in the right posterior thalamic radiation. Additionally, the risk of Alzheimer’s disease dementia is causally associated with reduced connectivity in the default mode and salience networks.

Conclusions

We identified 14 IDPs causally associated with dementia or its subtypes. We also identified potential causal effects of FTD and DLB on 153 IDPs and dementia and AD on 73 rs-fMRI phenotypes. Our findings provide insights into the aetiology of dementia and highlight structural brain changes and functional network impairments throughout the disease process. Furthermore, these results contribute to the identification of potential imaging-based predictors and therapeutic targets for dementia.

Abstract

Emotional granularity, reflecting the specificity with which individuals distinguish their emotional experiences, is crucial to emotional well-being. This study examined whether emotional granularity predicts adolescents’ social anxiety and depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 140 adolescents (M
age = 11.91) reported daily emotions for 21–28 days at three timepoints: before the pandemic, during the acute phase, and 1 year later. Results showed that negative emotional granularity decreased from prepandemic to the acute phase and increased during the chronic phase. Adolescents with larger decreases in negative granularity during the acute phase and smaller increases during the chronic phase reported higher social anxiety and depressive symptoms at follow-up. Notably, baseline granularity and its stress-related changes were stronger predictors of social anxiety than depression. These findings suggest that the ability to differentiate negative emotions with greater precision may serve as an adaptive emotional process that buffers adolescents against internalizing problems.

Recent evidence shows that school-based interventions to reduce screen time yield only modest effects, suggesting a need to reconsider how digital behavior change is approached in educational settings. Current programs often emphasize individual restriction, overlooking the broader social and cultural environments that shape children’s screen habits. We argue for a shift from “screen time reduction” toward promoting Digital Well-Being Literacy, which entails developing students’ capacity for mindful, balanced, and critical digital engagement. This direction aligns with 21st-century education priorities, emphasizing autonomy, digital citizenship, and self-regulation rather than avoidance. Screen use is influenced not only by personal choices but also by family routines, teacher modeling, school digital policies, and community expectations. Therefore, future interventions should adopt ecological, multi-level strategies that integrate school, home, and community contexts. Promoting digital self-regulation rather than restriction offers a more sustainable and developmentally meaningful approach to supporting children’s well-being in an increasingly digital world.

Background

Early life vitamin D levels may be associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related traits, but causality is unknown. We examine whether higher-than-standard vitamin D3 supplementation during the first 2 years, as well as higher pregnancy and childhood 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and their trajectories, are associated with lower ASD trait scores at ages 6–8 years in a non-clinical cohort.

Methods

This secondary analysis of the double-blind randomized clinical trial vitamin D intervention in infants (VIDI) comprised 366 Finnish children aged 6–8 years, 177 of whom were randomized to receive 400-IU and 189 to receive 1,200-IU daily oral vitamin D3 supplementation between ages 2 weeks and 2 years. ASD-related traits were assessed at mean age 7.2 years (SD 0.4) using the parent-reported Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ). Predictor variables were supplementation group, 25(OH)D concentrations measured during pregnancy and at ages 1 and 2 years, as well as 25(OH)D trajectories (high vs. low) derived from these time points.

Results

None of the predictor variables of interest were associated with the outcome in the full sample. After sex stratification, among boys, 25(OH)D concentrations at 1 and 2 years were inversely associated with ASSQ scores (mean difference −0.2 of normalized SD score (95% CI −0.3 to −0.1, p = .003) and −0.2 (95% CI −0.3 to −0.05, p = .01) per 10 ng/mL 25(OH)D) after adjustment for age, breastfeeding, parental education, maternal depressive symptoms, and season of 25(OH)D assessment as was belonging to the higher 25(OH)D trajectory, −0.45 SD (95% CI −0.79 to −0.10, p = .01).

Conclusions

We found no indication that higher-than-normal vitamin D3 supplementation between ages 0 and 2 years decreases ASD-related trait scores at ages 6–8 years. Sex-stratified analysis suggested an inverse association, among boys, between early life 25(OH)D concentrations and ASD-related traits, warranting further studies on potential causal direction and sex specificity of associations.

Traumatology, Vol 31(3), Sep 2025, 385-394; doi:10.1037/trm0000625

Upon the 20-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we explored how licensed mental health professionals who experienced the disaster firsthand reflected on their experiences and the changes in disaster mental health programming over the past two decades. This article presents reflections gathered from two focus groups with mental health providers in Louisiana, alongside the authors’ personal narratives of experiencing disaster and working in disaster response since Hurricane Katrina. We identified four themes describing the field of disaster mental health: that “nobody was in charge,” recognition that “people aren’t able to fully operate,” the importance of being “embraced by your community,” and a growing perception that people have become “more open to getting help.” We elaborate each using participants and our own reflections in concert with scholarship from the field. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings for policy and practice, providing recommendations for moving forward. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
