<p>Family systems are central to understanding development and well-being across the lifespan. This special section integrates research examining how diverse family processes shape socioemotional functioning, health, and relationships within broader cultural and contextual environments. Across three themes, the articles highlight distinct yet interconnected pathways through which family dynamics influence individual and family outcomes. The first theme, parenting influences on socioemotional outcomes, explores how emotional closeness, parenting strategies, and parents’ early experiences contribute to offsprings’ psychological adjustment. The second theme, cultural and contextual influences on family health and well-being, examines how sociocultural norms, systemic oppression, and contextual stressors intersect with family functioning and well-being. The third theme, relational dynamics in diverse family contexts, highlights the role of parent–child relationships, coparenting quality, and parent racial socialization in shaping outcomes. Collectively, these articles demonstrate how family dynamics are embedded within broader sociocultural and structural contexts. By synthesizing findings across diverse populations and developmental periods, this special section advances understanding of the multifaceted ways family environments contribute to risk and resilience. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<p>The purpose of this special issue is to dedicate a space for exploring the themes of resilience and recovery within the context of Hurricane Katrina, 20 years later. Specifically, the aim is to reflect on the long-term psychological, social, and community-based impacts, with lessons learned in the two decades following the disaster. This special issue includes a collection of firsthand experiences that assisted in the recovery process, along with empirical studies and reviews related to the field after Hurricane Katrina. A call to action is that we prioritize research, education, and policy to effectively address the impacts of disasters we experience daily. It is imperative that in between disasters, also referred to as the blue-sky days, we address pre-existing conditions of mental health to limit the impacts when disaster does occur, and doing so build out resilience. It is also important that we further advance policy to prioritize disaster preparedness for all but specifically for the most vulnerable populations. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

                        <p><p>
<st>Objectives</st>
</p>
<p>To explore the experiences of clinicians providing pastoral and mental health services to racially and ethnically minoritised students (REMS) at UK universities, aiming to understand the challenges REMS face in accessing support and to identify ways to improve service inclusivity.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Design</st>
</p>
<p>Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Setting</st>
</p>
<p>Student health and well-being services at five universities in the North East of England, a region with comparatively low racial diversity.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Participants</st>
</p>
<p>Ten clinicians (nine female, one male; nine White British, one other ethnic background; mean age 42.8 years) working in therapeutic roles with experience supporting REMS. Participants were recruited via opportunity sampling.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>Semi-structured interviews, averaging 44 min, were video-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis to identify key themes.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>Six overarching themes were identified: (1) the chokehold of layered systemic challenges, (2) dynamics of power, (3) lack of safety for REMS, (4) “Am I really getting it?”, (5) psychological therapies for white people by white people and (6) the thirst for expertise. Clinicians were enthusiastic about providing culturally responsive care but reported limited access to reflective spaces and training. Contextual factors—including racism, Brexit and the marketisation of higher education—were perceived to affect service delivery and REMS’ engagement with mental health support. Business-model approaches to service provision were sources of frustration.</p>
<p><br>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Clinicians face structural and systemic challenges in providing culturally sensitive mental health support to REMS. Enhancing staff training, reflective practice and service adaptation may improve access and efficacy. Findings offer practical insights for universities aiming to strengthen equity in student mental health services, and future work could evaluate interventions to increase clinician preparedness and REMS engagement.</p>

                        <p><h2>ABSTRACT</h2>
<p>The former Soviet Union’s restrictions on citizens’ foreign travel or emigration were notoriously draconian. Yet what replaced them in the fifteen independent states of the post-Soviet region has not been well analysed. Outside the Baltic republics, the monolithic and prohibitive policies of the Soviet past have given way to a patchwork of restrictions with more complex motivations reflecting the diversity of contemporary Eurasian states. However, while many more people in the region can travel abroad when they wish, exit remains a privilege, rather than an enforceable right. Post-Soviet states’ exit policies increasingly resemble those in other primarily authoritarian contexts around the world, albeit somewhat marked by Eurasian regimes’ high levels of both coercive capacity and informality and the weakness of labour and the left. We conclude that the USSR’s fixation on preventing exit was historically exceptional as a policy on foreign travel, rather than paradigmatic, and severely limited the regime’s own migration policy options. In a paradox, the relaxation of blanket prohibitions has only increased the post-Soviet state’s freedom to tailor restrictions on exit to its interests far more effectively than the USSR ever could.</p>

<p>Empirical studies have documented the relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and fathering problems among combat veteran fathers. However, scientific investigation of possible psychological mechanisms that may explain this relationship is lacking. The present study examined the relationships between PTSS, father–child relationships, and paternal functioning. Furthermore, we examined the mediating role of paternal overcontrol in the relationship between PTSS and fathering dimensions. Participants included 344 veteran fathers of children aged 3–12 from two groups: Israel Defense Forces combat veterans (<em>n</em> = 209) and noncombat veterans (<em>n</em> = 135). Participants completed a set of validated self-report questionnaires in a cross-sectional study. Fathers who served as combatants reported higher levels of PTSS and of father–child conflict compared to noncombatant veterans. Moreover, among combat veterans, paternal overcontrol mediated the relationship between PTSS and conflictual father–child relationships and an inconsistent discipline dimension. The research findings demonstrate that the more intense veterans’ PTSS, the more extensive its impact is on various dimensions of fatherhood. Combat veteran fathers’ tendency to overcontrol their children might explain some of the variability in their paternal parenting problems. Recognizing and addressing overcontrolling behaviors through targeted psychoeducational parenting programs can enhance family dynamics and improve outcomes for both fathers and their children. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

                        <p><p>Families, Systems, & Health, Vol 43(3), Sep 2025, 416-422; doi:10.1037/fsh0000938</p>
<p>Introduction: Familism varies across cultures, with some societies placing greater emphasis on family ties and obligations than others. Despite its variability, the precise impact of familism on psychosocial functioning remains inconclusive and requires further exploration to clarify its effects in different cultural contexts. Understanding the role of familism in a cross-cultural context can help health care providers enhance patient care by considering familial influences on mental health and well-being. Method: This study used World Values Survey data (Wave 7) to investigate familism’s effects on psychological well-being, physical well-being, and life satisfaction across 48 countries. Hierarchical linear models were employed to analyze data from 69,578 adult participants (52.4% female, <em>M</em>age = 42.59, <em>SD</em> = 16.28). The study examined the relationship between familism and well-being outcomes, with consideration of urbanization and individualism as moderators. Results: Findings revealed a positive association between familism and well-being outcomes, indicating potential universality in this relationship across cultures. Urbanization and individualism did not significantly influence the relationship between familism and well-being, suggesting its stability across different societal contexts. Discussion: These results suggest that familism may have universal benefits for well-being, as it fosters connections within families, providing individuals with a sense of purpose and meaning in life. This is particularly significant in the contemporary context of shrinking household sizes, epidemic of loneliness, and increasing social isolation. Integrating insights on familism can help health care providers better support patients and improve mental health and well-being. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>
