Background

Early temperament has been shown to predict socioemotional outcomes, but its neural correlates are not yet fully understood. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between early temperament and neuronal network functional connectivity (FC), and how these factors contribute to the risk of psychopathology.

Methods

Using a longitudinal cohort followed from infancy to age 7 (N = 749 collected at infancy), we assessed temperament through two approaches: data-driven profiles extracted from parent-reported questionnaires collected from infancy to age 3 and lab-based assessments of behavioral inhibition (BI) at age 3. Symptoms of psychopathology were measured at age 7 with the parent-reported Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Resting-state EEG data collected at ages 3, 5, and 7, along with source-space connectivity methods, were used to examine FC within brain networks.

Results

Children with an emotionally and behaviorally dysregulated (EBD) profile, an identified risk factor for psychopathology, exhibited reduced FC in the frontoparietal network compared to their emotionally and behaviorally regulated (EBR) peers. BI at age 3 was also negatively correlated with FC in the ventral attention network at age 3 and the frontoparietal network at age 7. Additionally, frontoparietal FC moderated the relationship between early temperament and later attention-deficit symptoms: EBD children showed higher levels of attention problems than their EBR peers, but only when frontoparietal FC was low.

Conclusions

These findings underscore the importance of network connectivity in understanding early temperament and its socioemotional outcomes. Specifically, they highlight the role of attention and control networks in the development of psychopathology, suggesting potential targets for early interventions aimed at at-risk children.

Abstract

Objective

This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese Family Strength Measure (CFSM) in families with young children in Hong Kong, and compare the levels of family strengths of families with different socioeconomic statuses.

Background

Six types of family strengths have been proposed to shape a strong family in China, while little is known about whether the six types of family strengths play important roles in families with young children. Meanwhile, whether the levels of family strengths vary with the socioeconomic status of Chinese families remains unknown.

Method

749 families with young children in Hong Kong completed the survey. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to examine the psychometric properties of CFSM. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the levels of family strengths among different socioeconomic groups.

Results

results showed that the CFSM with the original factor structure still fitted the data best. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between socioeconomic status and the level of enjoyable time together.

Conclusion

Appreciation, commitment, enjoyment, communication, resilience, and spirituality play important roles in maintaining strong family bonds. The financial situation has a significant impact on family functioning, especially in family time and entertainment.

Implications

This study provides insights into how to build strong families in the Chinese context.

ABSTRACT

Purpose

We investigated the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic affected hospital abortion rates in a Canadian setting.

Methods

We obtained all abortions between 2012 and 2022 from hospital discharge data in the Maintenance and Use of Data for the Study of Hospital Clientele database for Quebec, Canada. The exposure was the pandemic (March 2020 to March 2022) compared with the preceding period (January 2012 to February 2020). The outcome included hospital-based abortions versus other pregnancy admissions. We examined if the pandemic affected monthly hospital abortion rates using interrupted time series regression. We estimated risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between the pandemic and hospital-based abortions, accounting for pandemic wave, abortion method, gestational age, and other patient characteristics.

Results

There were 21,675 hospital abortions in total, including 4177 (19.3%) during the pandemic. Abortion rates decreased by 1.2 per 1000 pregnancies the first month of the pandemic and continued to decrease by 0.15 per 1000 every month thereafter. Compared with the preceding year, patients were less likely to have a hospital abortion anytime during the pandemic (RR 0.88, 95% CI 0.84–0.93), particularly during the third (RR 0.81, 95% CI 0.74–0.88) and fourth (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.75–0.89) waves. The decrease was most apparent for instrumentation abortions, abortions before 14 weeks of gestation, and abortions among patients aged ≥ 40 years or who were socioeconomically advantaged.

Conclusions

The pandemic was associated with fewer hospital abortions before 14 weeks, as well as among older or socioeconomically advantaged patients.

ABSTRACT

To what extent does regulatory agencies’ failure to protect the public from harm result from undue industry influence? We argue that “regulatory capture” is invoked too easily to explain regulatory failure. To re-examine the relationship between regulatory capture and regulatory failure, we use process-tracing to study UK regulatory decision-making about payment protection insurance (PPI), a product synonymous with one of the largest financial mis-selling scandals of all time. We analyze the case through three different perspectives on regulatory decision-making: regulatory capture, organizational reputation, and organizational blind spots. The findings show that only the combination of all three theoretical lenses enables us to make sense of the Financial Services Authority’s approach to PPI. We advance regulatory failure theory by showing how different external pressures on regulators and internal organizational constraints interact to result in failure, thus providing a comprehensive framework for the study of regulatory failure that future studies can apply.

<imgsrc border="0" align="left" alt="image">Objective: </imgsrc>

This systematic review aimed to appraise and synthesize evidence about licensed health care professionals’ experiences and perceptions of treatment decision-making affecting older people with memory loss and comorbid conditions.

Introduction:

Treatment decision-making affecting older people with memory loss and comorbid conditions presents significant challenges for health care professionals as existing clinical practice guidelines and health care services are designed to focus on managing single-disease conditions. The complexity of balancing comorbid conditions, in addition to memory loss, has led to increased research in this area. Given the growing body of literature exploring health care professionals’ decision-making, a synthesis of this evidence is needed to provide clearer insights and inform practice.

Eligibility criteria:

This review considered qualitative studies that explored licensed health care professionals’ treatment decisions when providing care for older people (over 65 years) living with memory loss and comorbid conditions. We considered studies conducted across community and clinical settings.

Methods:

A 3-step search strategy was used in May 2022 to identify published and unpublished studies across the CINAHL (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (ProQuest). Additionally, relevant websites were searched using keywords to identify gray literature. Searches covered all available literature from database inception using a combination of controlled vocabulary (MeSH and CINAHL headings) and keywords to capture qualitative studies, with an updated search conducted in June 2023. Two independent reviewers completed the title/abstract and full-text screening, critical appraisal, data extraction, and data synthesis. Findings classified as unequivocal or credible were grouped into categories that were synthesized to generate a comprehensive set of findings. The ConQual approach was applied to assess confidence in qualitative research synthesis.

Results:

Fourteen studies published between 2006 and 2022 met the eligibility criteria. A total of 76 findings were extracted and grouped into 8 categories. Three synthesized findings were assembled from the findings: i) Health care professionals experience uncertainty and perceive older people with memory loss in ways that influence their treatment decision-making; ii) Communication challenges and contextual factors unique to older persons, families, and health service organizations influences health care professionals’ treatment decision-making affecting older people with memory loss and comorbid conditions; and iii) health care professionals identify processes to support safeguarding older people with memory loss in treatment decision-making.

Conclusions:

Health care professionals’ treatment decision-making practices varied across medical specialties, with similarities spanning clinical settings. Health care professionals were committed to ensuring that older patients with memory loss and comorbid conditions received treatment to enhance their quality of life while promoting safe and ethical care. However, they held assumptions about these patients’ abilities, viewed communication as challenging, and did not always have a clear understanding of patient preferences. This review identified that health care professionals who care for this population require further education. Changes to health care professionals’ treatment decision-making are needed to ensure that older people and their family members are actively engaged in the processes of shared decision-making, which will support a person- and family-centered care approach.

ABSTRACT

Relational savoring, a prevention/intervention approach that involves reflecting on positive moments of connection with another person, promotes wellbeing in the parenting relationship. In this program, parents savor memories with strong attachment content (including Secure Base or Safe Haven memories), but it is currently unknown whether the benefits of relational savoring differ as a function of memory type. Within a sample of Iranian mothers of children younger than 6, this study examines impacts of RS administered in Persian on closeness to child, parental satisfaction/competence, and maternal caregiving quality. In this randomized controlled trial, 150 mothers from a city in Iran were randomized into three 50-member groups (relational savoring-Safe Haven [RS-Safe Haven]; relational savoring-Secure Base [RS-Secure Base]; Control Group). Participants completed assessments at pretest, posttest, and follow-up (3 months post-intervention). The two intervention groups (RS-Safe Haven, RS-Secure Base) participated in one-hour group relational savoring sessions that met weekly for four weeks. The Control Group received no intervention. RS interventions significantly improved maternal closeness, parental satisfaction, and maternal sensitivity/availability compared to control, with gains evident at both post-test and follow-up. While both RS-Secure Base and RS-Safe Haven groups showed comparable improvements on most outcomes, RS-Secure Base demonstrated stronger effects for parental efficacy, particularly at follow-up. These findings have important implications for future work with relational savoring, suggesting that savoring both Secure Base and Safe Haven memories can enhance maternal outcomes.
