Michael Palm, the president of UNC-Chapel Hill’s AAUP Chapter noted: “Transparency, accountability accessibility – these are important aspects of a public university system, but that’s not what this is about. This is about capitulating to pressure at the state level and at the federal level to scrutinize faculty and intimidate faculty who are teaching unpopular subjects right now.”

Abstract

A recurring paradox in recent literature is that victims’ psychological adjustment outcomes worsen as classroom-level victimization declines. Due to the limited and inconsistent findings from longitudinal studies, this two-wave study aims to examine whether the impact of individual-level victimization on three basic psychological needs (autonomy, relatedness, and competence needs) and internalizing problems (anxiety and depression) varies across classrooms with different victimization levels. A sample of Chinese adolescents (Time 1: N = 1358, 49.5% girls; M
age ± SD = 12.38 ± 0.53; Time 2: N = 1029, 54.3% girls; M
age ± SD = 13.37 ± 0.49) from 22 classrooms were followed for 20 months. Multilevel modeling analysis showed that, in healthier classroom, the individual-level victimization had a stronger effect on satisfaction of relatedness and competence needs, and a stronger indirect effect on internalizing problems (theoretically via basic psychological needs satisfaction). Notably, the moderating effect of classroom-level victimization on the direct path from individual-level victimization to internalizing problems was significant among boys but not among girls. Findings highlight the importance of understanding the individual–environment interactions in the context of Chinese culture when examining the consequences of victimization. They also remind practitioners to pay attention to the potential risks faced of victims in classrooms with low levels of victimization, especially regarding the satisfaction of their psychological needs.

ABSTRACT

Disease control measures during the COVID-19 pandemic may have intensified loneliness among older adults, though experiences varied based on individual vulnerabilities and resources. This study examines loneliness trajectories among older adults using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, spanning four waves: two pre-pandemic (Wave 8: 2016–2017; Wave 9: 2018–2019) and two COVID-19 substudies (June–July and November–December 2020). The sample included 4492 respondents (17,968 observations). Latent class growth analysis identified four loneliness trajectories: ‘not lonely’ (73.5%), ‘pandemic loneliness’ (12.7%), ‘transitioned out of loneliness’ (6.9%) and ‘enduring loneliness’ (6.8%). Multinomial regression analysis explored predictors of trajectory membership. Younger age (50–74), being female, depression, COVID-related worries and disrupted daily routines increased the likelihood of belonging to ‘pandemic loneliness’ rather than ‘not lonely’. Optimism and strong partner support increased the likelihood of remaining ‘not lonely’ or transitioning out of loneliness. The pandemic’s unintended effects, including routine disruptions and financial concerns, heightened loneliness risks, whereas psychosocial resources provided critical resilience. To prepare for future public health crises, policies should strengthen mental health support, promote social and economic stability and enhance social connection and resilience. Addressing psychosocial factors is essential to reducing loneliness and protecting older adults’ well-being during and beyond periods of crisis.

Abstract

Emerging research suggests that unique adaptations in emotional cognition prepare pregnant women for motherhood. This study compared emotional-cognitive responses to infant stimuli in 44 pregnant and 34 non-pregnant Danish participants and explored associations with postpartum outcomes in pregnant participants. Emotional-cognitive responses included facial expressions, skin conductance responses, visual attention, and emotional ratings of multi-modal infant stimuli, including virtual reality. Postpartum outcomes were assessed with questionnaires covering maternal well-being, bonding, reflective functioning, and emotional responses during their own infant cries. Pregnant participants exhibited higher skin conductance responses, more positive facial expressions, and less negative self-reported emotional reactions to infant stimuli compared to non-pregnant participants, with no differences in visual attention. More positive facial expressions to infant faces and vocalizations among pregnant may reflect an adaptive maternal positivity bias, because it correlated with better maternal bonding to their own infant at six months postpartum. Limitations include the cross-sectional design, which makes it difficult to determine whether group differences are pregnancy-driven adaptations, as opposed to findings from alternative longitudinal designs. Nevertheless, the observed differences and positive associations with maternal outcomes are consistent with previous studies, suggesting that pregnancy involves emotional–cognitive adaptations that support the transition to motherhood.

Abstract

Objective

This study investigates the post-disaster couple dynamics after the 2023 Türkiye earthquake, integrating the lenses of survivors and couple therapists.

Background

Little is known about the romantic relationship dynamics of couples after natural disasters, despite the potential to serve as both a source and a risk factor for well-being.

Method

Using a constructivist grounded theory, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 earthquake survivors (aged 22–40, M = 30.2, SD = 5.84) and eight couple therapists (aged 28–48, M = 34.76, SD = 6.45).

Results

Our findings reveal that shortly after the earthquake, relationship satisfaction increased, although this effect was transient. Over the subsequent 18-month period, many couples experienced conflicts, sexual issues, violence and aggression, or relationship dissolution driven by the disaster environment and external stressors. Although participants’ persistent posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms or grief contributed to these outcomes, some couples employing dyadic adjustment strategies to address the effects of earthquake trauma and additional stressors exhibited posttraumatic relational growth.

Conclusion

Shared trauma exposure can potentially strengthen relational cohesion or intensify strain in a couple’s adaptation to earthquakes, contingent on the couple’s resources and employed strategies.

Implications

To foster relational resilience, future research and interventions should prioritize culturally sensitive psychotherapeutic approaches and policy measures in post-disaster settings.

Anyone working in an organisation knows it: meetings follow one after another at a frantic pace. On average, managers spend 23 hours a week in meetings. Much of what happens in them is considered to be of low value, or even entirely counterproductive. The paradox is that bad meetings generate even more meetings… in an attempt to repair the damage caused by previous ones.
