<p>Previous social science research on gendered experiences of thrush and vulvovaginal health has overlooked, or inadvertently sanitised, the materiality of having a body. Therefore, this study aims to return attention to the material, sensorial, and corporeal dimensions of living with recurrent thrush and use this to broaden our understandings of gendered embodiment. We present findings from a qualitative study of interviews with 32 people including women, trans, nonbinary and gender diverse people. This paper examines the bodily experiences of recurrent vulvovaginal thrush through a feminist materiality lens, drawing on concepts of ‘leaky bodies’ and microbiological relationships with the ‘not-me’/‘not-not-me’. We present the multidimensional experiences of managing recurrent vulvovaginal thrush, examining the ‘mess’ it creates, the vigilance required to monitor microbial imbalances, the negotiation of gendered perceptions of ‘grossness’ and the compromises individuals make between physical and emotional dis/comfort. Through attending to the material, microbial, and gendered imaginaries and realities involved in managing the ‘mess’ of recurrent thrush, we explore the additional considerations and challenges experienced by those with lived experience currently missing from research.</p>

<p>Subjective mental effort is often conceptualized as an inherently costly and aversive phenomenon, but there is ongoing consideration about whether it can also be enjoyable. We explored whether subjective mental effort can be both a pleasant or aversive state depending on how it is conceptualized and measured. Through separate measures, we conceptualized subjective mental effort as driven by task demands (i.e., demanded effort; the amount of work required to do well on a task; Hart & Staveland, 1988) and pure effort expended on a task without reference to what was compelled by the task (i.e., invested effort; the amount of work put forth irrespective of task demands; Ryan, 1982). In two studies (total <em>N</em> = 902), participants read several cognitively demanding passages and then reported their invested effort, demanded effort, and other hedonically valenced subjective experiences (e.g., pleasant affect, frustration). We hypothesized that invested effort and demanded effort would relate with one another and with a core experience of subjective mental effort, but that demanded (vs. invested) effort would correspond with hedonically unpleasant (vs. pleasant) and mentally depleted (vs. motivated) experiences. Results from both studies supported this idea, revealing that the conceptual profiles of demanded and invested effort diverged moderately or strongly. Our findings suggest that the hedonic aversiveness of subjective mental effort may depend on whether it is conceptualized as a demanded (vs. invested) phenomenon. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

                        <p><h2>ABSTRACT</h2>
<p>The neurodiversity movement challenges traditional deficit-oriented models of autism. However, inclusion efforts often prioritize individual attitudinal change over structural reform (e.g., policies and research practices) or exclude Autistic people with intersecting marginalized identities. Just research requires scientific inquiry to challenge the oppressive systems from which it emerges, and can sometimes reinforce, by directly addressing interlocking structures of power. Otherwise, research can fail to serve, and even perpetuate harm against, the most marginalized Neurodivergent people, including those with intellectual disabilities, nonspeaking individuals, and racial, ethnic, and gender minorities who remain underrepresented in broader research and policy generation. This special issue, <i>Using Neurodiversity-Affirming Intersectional Approaches to Build More Equitable Societies and Shape Public Policy</i>, therefore, seeks to challenge the systems of inequality dominant in autism research by uniting neurodiversity and intersectional frameworks with a focus on policy recommendations. In this introductory article to our special issue, we share the strategies we used to improve representation in our special issue and an overview of the papers in the special issue. We, the guest editors of the special issue, intentionally used our networks to seek contributions from scholars, advocates, and communities traditionally excluded from academic publishing, such as nonspeaking people and those from the Global South. This resulted in a special issue organized into three thematic sections: grounding neurodiversity in intersectionality to improve policy, addressing underrepresentation in research, advocacy, and publishing, and promoting systems-level and grassroots approaches to wellbeing. Across contributions, authors offer empirical and/or theoretical insights with actionable policy recommendations and demonstrate a range of approaches such as community-led methods, Open Scholarship practices, and decolonial and critical race frameworks that can shift power, improve measurement and access, and guide equitable resource allocation. Together, we call for a field-wide pivot from changing individuals to transforming systems, so that justice, participation, and self-determination are attainable for all neurominorities, especially those at multiply marginalized intersections.</p>

                        <p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>Infant-directed singing (IDSi) is a natural means of dyadic communication that contributes to children’s mental health by enhancing emotion expression, close relationships, exploration and learning. Therefore, it is important to learn about factors that impact the IDSi. This study modeled the mother- (mental health), infant- (emotional responses and health status) and environment (war trauma)-related factors influencing acoustic IDSi features, such as pitch (F0) variability, amplitude and vibration and the F0 contour of shapes and movements. The participants were 236 mothers and infants from Gaza, the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The mothers reported their mental health problems, infants’ emotionality and regulation skills, and, along with pediatric checkups, illnesses and disorders, as well as traumatic war events that were also photo documented. The results showed that the mothers’ mental health problems and infants’ poor health status were associated with IDSi, characterized by narrow and lifeless amplitude and vibration, and poor health was also associated with the limited and rigid shapes and movements of F0 contours. Traumatic war events were associated with flat and narrow F0 variability and the monotonous and invariable resonance and rhythm of IDSi formants. The infants’ emotional responses did not impact IDSi. The potential of protomusical singing to help war-affected dyads is discussed.</p>
