ABSTRACT

Family foster care (FFC) is associated with positive developmental outcomes for children. However, the recruitment and retention of foster families prepared to respond to children’s needs are a cross-cutting challenge worldwide and require a better understanding of which factors may influence it. This study analysed the associations between personal characteristics, perceptions about FFC and intention of becoming a foster family in a community sample. A total of 348 Portuguese adults completed an online cross-sectional survey. Participants completed the Integrated Model of Family Foster Care-Perceptions about Family Foster Scale (MIAF-PFFS; ProChild CoLAB & SCML, 2024), comprising five dimensions (perceptions about caregiving, about foster children, about the biological family, about the foster family and about the decision-making process) and answered two questions reporting on their intention of becoming a foster family. Female participants, with higher education, and with children reported higher intention for fostering. More adequate perceptions about caregiving, the biological family and the decision-making process were associated with higher intention for fostering. Regression analyses showed that being female, having children and more adequate perceptions of caregiving of foster children were the factors that most contributed to the intention for fostering. These results highlight how specific perceptions of FFC can enhance individuals’ intention for fostering, thus informing targeted recruitment strategies.

Abstract

Objective

Talking about the present-moment quality of a therapy relationship—sometimes termed immediacy or working in the here and now—has been recommended as a technique to enhance the therapeutic alliance and treatment outcome. The aim of the present study was to compare perceptions of therapy when the discussion was of the client’s relationship with the therapist or with someone else.

Method

In the study, undergraduate participants were presented with an audio recording of a therapist and client discussing their relationship and another recording in which the discussion was of the client’s relationship with someone else. For approximately half the participants, the relationships discussed were both positive; for the other participants, both relationships were problematic. After listening to each recording, participants rated the therapeutic bond and treatment credibility.

Results

Results revealed that the effect of discussing the therapy relationship depended on the relationship valence: When the valence was positive, participants rated the therapeutic bond and treatment credibility higher for discussions of the therapy relationship; when the valence was negative, ratings were higher for discussions of an outside relationship.

Conclusion

These findings suggest that focusing the therapy discussion on the therapeutic relationship may be more helpful when the relationship is positive than when it is negative.

ABSTRACT

Despite the ubiquity of variation in child development within individuals, across groups, and across tasks, timescales, and contexts, dominant methods in developmental science and education research still favor group averages, short snapshots of time, and single environments. The Learning Variability Network Exchange (LEVANTE) is a framework designed to enable coordinated data collection by research teams worldwide, with the goal of measuring variability in children’s learning and development. The LEVANTE measure set aims to capture variability in learning outcomes (literacy and numeracy) as well as in core cognitive and social constructs. LEVANTE will yield a large, open access longitudinal dataset for long-term research use, both creating a multidisciplinary research network and facilitating the science of learning variability.

Abstract

This article explores a way First Nations in Canada can move beyond the constraints of the Indian Act and rebuild their own governance. It argues that exercising their inherent right to self-government through policy development and control is a path forward. It outlines a process for First Nations to review their existing policies, understand their legal authority, and realign policy to reflect their own cultures, values and priorities. By taking control of their own policymaking, First Nations can address community needs more effectively, reduce reliance on federal control, and build a foundation for stronger governance.

Sommaire

ABSTRACT

Background

The Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) represents a significant shift in service funding for children with hereditary or congenital cognitive disabilities. This PRISMA-based scoping review identifies and maps the NDIS literature to display research gaps and priorities for this cohort.

Method

Twenty-nine databases were systematically searched in May 2024 (updated January 2025). Findings were mapped to the NDIS Outcomes Framework.

Results

Twenty-nine studies were reviewed (1937 children, mostly pre-adolescent). Qualitative methods were frequently used in this research (k = 16), followed by quantitative (k = 7) and mixed methods (k = 6). Targeted interventions to build child capacity demonstrated positive impacts on Daily Living, Community Participation, and Relationships. Studies did not explore the impact of the NDIS on Learning and Work. Challenges with the NDIS planning process were also reported.

Conclusions

Further rigorous research across all NDIS service priority areas, particularly adolescent education and employment, is needed to optimise child outcomes and inform practices.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the transformative potential of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in addressing environmental conflicts arising from large-scale and transboundary infrastructure projects. It argues that traditional litigation, constrained by cost, rigidity, and adversarial dynamics, fails to ensure environmental justice or sustainable outcomes, particularly for marginalized communities. Employing a mixed-methods approach, integrating doctrinal analysis of global legal frameworks with comparative case studies, the study reveals systemic power imbalances that render ADR processes vulnerable to manipulation by powerful states and corporations. Through in-depth analyses of cases such as the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, Belo Monte Dam, and Dakota Access Pipeline, the paper exposes the phenomenon of “unattended voices” in environmental governance. It advances a novel framework for “Integrated Environmental Justice ADR”, proposing the establishment of a Global Environmental ADR Tribunal, mandatory Environmental Justice Impact Assessments, and cultural competency mandates to reimagine ADR as a genuinely equitable and sustainable instrument of environmental harmony.
