<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<div class="boxTitle">Background</div>
<p>Patient-centred care is a cornerstone for healthcare quality, leading many hospitals to implement programs that prioritise patient, even within time-constrained clinical environments. Effects of these programs are poorly evaluated.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Method</div>
<p>This retrospective observational cohort study aims to evaluates the impact of a patient-centred initiative aimed at protecting clinical encounter time by enhancing communication, fostering shared decision-making, and minimizing care interruptions on the quality of pain management in hospitalised patients. Electronic health record data and a difference-in-differences estimator were used to examine changes in quality of pain management outcomes in over 15,000 patients across 80,000 hospital stays ranging from 2018 to 2022 in the University Hospitals of Geneva, SwitzerlandPain management quality was evaluated using timeliness of pain relief delivery, adequacy of pain documentation, and patient satisfaction with pain management. Data were compared in units who implemented the programs compared to matched control units to evaluate both the immediate and sustained effects of the program, accounting for potential selection and contamination biases.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Results</div>
<p>The results demonstrated significant and sustained improvements in pain management quality in intervention units. Rates of timely painkiller administration increased significantly more in intervention units compared to control units (OR 1.46, 95% CI [1.37, 1.56]), with effects persisting over time. Pain documentation also showed significant improvement in intervention units (OR 1.47, 95% CI [1.15, 1.88]), although a minor initial decline was observed, likely due to temporary staffing disruptions during implementation. However, there was no significant improvement in patient-reported satisfaction with pain management, which may reflect limitations in survey sensitivity and response biases given the 53.3% response rate.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Conclusion</div>
<p>This patient-centred program effectively improved objective measures of pain management quality in a tertiary hospital setting. However, further research is needed to assess its impact on patient experience, as well as healthcare professional engagement and satisfaction. Insights from future studies could guide the development of similar patient-centred initiatives that aim to balance efficiency with high-quality patient care.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<p>According to the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are persons who have been forced or obliged to flee or leave their homes or places of habitual residence for reasons such as violence, human rights violations, and disasters, and who have not crossed an internationally-recognized state border. Internal Displacement has been on the international agenda for decades, and yet it has received significantly less attention in legal literature than other categories of vulnerable individuals. This is particularly so in respect of the IDP description. There are countless works that analyse in rigorous detail the definitions of other categories of forced migrants, such as refugees, or trafficked persons, for example, but we have significantly less knowledge on what it means, in legal terms, to be an IDP.We have even less knowledge on who is excluded from the IDP description. Is an individual who has committed murder, aggression, and/or terrorism offences excluded from being an IDP? The key framework for the protection of IDPs—the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement—does not address this issue and neither does scholarship. This can be contrasted to refugee law, where there are explicit clauses in the 1951 Refugee Convention as well as many analyses in scholarship ascertaining who is excluded from refugee status. This article therefore aims to answer the following question: Should there be exclusionary criteria regarding the IDP description? Answering this question is important because it will give us greatly-needed clarification on who counts—and who does not count—as an IDP.The article will proceed as follows: the introductory section sets out the article’s aims, structure, and contribution to literature. Part 2 will explain the article’s significance and Part 3 will briefly explain who an IDP is to provide a better understanding of whether anyone should be excluded from the IDP concept. Part 4 will examine whether exclusion clauses make sense in the IDP context, drawing on insights from the three branches of law which have inspired and/or formed the basis of the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement: international refugee law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law. Part 5 will conclude.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Methods</div>
<p>A cross-sectional online survey study was conducted in September 2024 with 964 German citizens and 423 healthcare professionals from respondi panels (Cologne, Germany). Respondents reported their attitudes toward eight contemptuous statements regarding COVID-19 pandemic management and their personal COVID-19 experiences, including infection, vaccine side effects, long COVID, and patient care (for professionals). Associations were analyzed using logistic regression and Mann–Whitney U tests.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Results</div>
<p>Citizens with self-reported experience of COVID-19 infections were less likely to hold contemptuous beliefs (OR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.39–0.85; <span>P</span> = .005), while those with experience of vaccine side effects were considerably more likely (OR: 1.50; 95% CI: 1.10–1.92; <span>P</span> = .009). Long COVID had no significant effect. Among professionals, not having cared for COVID-19 patients doubled the likelihood of contempt (OR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.28–3.45; <span>P</span> = .003).</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Conclusion</div>

<div class="boxTitle">Background</div>
<p>Scotland’s human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme includes boys, yet awareness of male-associated cancers and eligibility remains unclear. Awareness may differ by gender and socioeconomic status, contributing to inequalities and declining uptake. This study assessed knowledge of HPV, HPV-related cancers and the vaccination programme.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Methods</div>
<p>A cross-sectional online survey (<span>n</span> = 1052) was conducted in 2023. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression explored gender- and deprivation-related differences in awareness of HPV, HPV-related cancers and the vaccination programme.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Results</div>
<p>Overall, 80.6% had heard of HPV, with higher awareness among females (89.2%) than males (67.3%, <span>P</span> < .001) and in less deprived areas (88.8% vs. 79.8%, <span>P</span> = .004). Cervical cancer was recognized (78.9% females, 54.8% males), while awareness of non-cervical cancers was low, especially oropharyngeal (<10%). Fewer than half (48.9%) knew boys are included in Scotland’s programme. Vaccine awareness strongly predicted knowledge of male cancers (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 4.41) and the boys’ programme (aOR = 10.67). Despite knowledge gaps, willingness to vaccinate children remained high (>92%).</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Conclusions</div>

<p>This article addressed the critical issue of citizens’ attitudes toward law enforcement, focusing on motivational postures toward the police (i.e., the psychological dispositions that individuals maintain toward the police). The study contributes by providing the first validated motivational postures scale toward the police in Spanish. It responds to a gap in research on motivational postures within Spanish-speaking societies and the absence of properly validated scales in both English and Spanish. Using two independent online panel samples from Chile, exploratory (Study 1, <em>n</em> = 1,163) and confirmatory (Study 2, <em>n</em> = 770) factor analyses were conducted refining a scale that initially proposed five postures (commitment, capitulation, resistance, disengagement, game-playing). Surprisingly, a sixth posture, termed avoidance, emerged in Study 1, reflecting a physical–behavioral dimension of distancing from the police. The scale with dimensions of six motivational postures was validated with satisfactory results, evidenced by favorable fit indices and factor loadings. Concurrently validated, the scale exhibited correlations with positive and negative emotions toward the police, procedural justice, legitimacy, and identification with the police. However, divergent validation results were unexpected, revealing correlations between trait aggressiveness and motivational postures, possibly influenced by the context of heightened police repression. Given the relevance of citizen–police dynamics in democratic societies, this research offers insights crucial for reducing conflict and violence between citizens and the police. Future studies are encouraged to explore the contextual relevance of the avoidance dimension, replicate divergent validity analyses using alternative variables, and validate the scale in other Spanish-speaking contexts. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<p>Outliers commonly arise in real situations, particularly in small areas where outliers could occur due to model errors or survey errors. In this study, we investigate a robust approach for handling outliers in a multivariate small area model, where there are multiple response variables of interest. Specifically, we consider the multivariate Fay-Herriot (MFH) model, which commonly assumes multivariate normal distributions for area random effects and sampling errors. However, it is known that the normality assumption is usually sensitive to outliers or data with heavy tails. Therefore, we propose the multivariate t-distribution as the alternative underlying distribution, called the Mt-FH model. We also construct parameter estimation methods for the model by considering generalizations of the likelihood function and the EM algorithm to enhance the accuracy and avoid computational issues. In particular, we propose two parameter estimation methods for the model based on the (profile) Lq-likelihood approach and the expectation conditional maximization (ECM) algorithm, called the MLq-ECM and profile MLq-ECM. We conduct a simulation study to investigate the efficiency of the Mt-FH model and the (profile) MLq-ECM methods in handling outliers and deviations of the data from the normality assumption. The outlier patterns considered in our study are the mean shift and variance shift patterns. The simulation results based on biases and mean squared errors suggest that the Mt-FH models can improve the MFH model in the presence of outliers. Finally, we assess the performance of the Mt-FH model through an analysis of the welfare variables in Thailand. The results based on the AIC and the percentage reduction of the MSE estimator highlight the advantages of the Mt-FH model over the MFH model. Furthermore, the integration of the MLq-ECM approach further strengthens the performance of the Mt-FH model.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<p>Social Desirability Bias (SDB), providing a favorable image of oneself in self-reports, is a persistent problem in survey research on sensitive topics. However, face-saving approaches appear promising in discouraging SDB. Specifically, face-saving survey item formulations aim to reduce the threat of judgment for norm-violations, thereby fostering a safer context for self-disclosure. This experimental study examined the use of face-saving to elicit more truthful responses to yes/no questions using a quota sample representative of the Dutch population. We included face-saving preambles that excused for or normalized sensitive behaviors (e.g., “It can easily happen that the limit for legal driving is exceeded when consuming alcohol”). We also included face-saving response options using degrees of truth (“occasionally”) or justifications for norm transgressions (e.g., “only when there was no other option”). There were three objectives. First, the design included a replication of a face-saving study regarding COVID-19, where we assessed the efficacy of a condition that <span>combined</span> a face-saving preamble with face-saving answer options (<span>N</span> = 303) against a control condition without any face-saving elements (<span>N</span> = 284). Second, we extended the replication’s design by including conditions to measure the effects of offering face-saving preambles (<span>N</span> = 281) and offering face-saving answer options <span>in isolation</span> (<span>N</span> = 283). Third, we investigated the effectiveness of face-saving using novel operationalizations on additional topics, including sustainability and responsible driving. The replication confirmed the effectiveness of the combined face-saving strategy. The extension that included all conditions (<span>N</span>total = 1,151) revealed that offering face-saving answer options reduced SDB significantly, up to 23 percent. There was no main effect of including a preamble, nor was there an interaction effect of the two manipulations. These findings highlight the critical role that face-saving response options might play in improving the accuracy of self-reported data, while calling into question the usefulness of including face-saving preambles.</p>
