Methods:

An online anonymous questionnaire was distributed to third and fourth year GP registrars enrolled in the Irish College of General Practitioners training schemes. The online questionnaire evaluated participants’ training experiences and confidence levels in key areas of child and adolescent mental health in primary care.

Results:

Sixty participants completed the survey out of 406, yielding a response rate of 14.8%. The majority (88%) reported no formal training or experience working in Child and Adolescent Mental Healthcare Services (CAMHS) during their GP training scheme. Responses indicated that many participants rated their competency, skills, and knowledge in essential areas of Child and Adolescent Mental Health as needing improvement. Similarly, their awareness of referral pathways and specialty services was below expectations, with poor perceived access to services. A large proportion (91.7%) expressed a definite need for further training in child and adolescent mental health disorders.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, governments have changed the way they solve public problems by implementing new technologies, systems, and digital platforms. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have been popularized, disrupting societies and organizations. Thus, national governments have started to implement AI, something that has been reflected in several strategies, projects, and public policies. The main purpose of this research is to compare the AI public policies of two countries, Spain and México, from the theoretical perspective of comparative public policy. This research seeks to understand the relevance of government public policies, strategies, and government actions in the field of AI from the theoretical perspective of comparative public policy, as well as to highlight the elements and characteristics that make up the AI public policies for these countries. The results show that both countries share a political-social intention in the establishment of public policies and the development of AI. However, while Spain has consolidated projects and institutions that throwing public policy results, Mexico has not been able to consolidate public policies and institutions that take up the issue as a priority.

School Psychology, Vol 40(6), Nov 2025, 666-679; doi:10.1037/spq0000681

The adolescent mental health crisis has prompted a need for an improved understanding of developmental trajectories of psychopathology to promote understanding of risk and protective factors and bolster prevention and intervention efforts. The present study describes the Substance Use and Risk Factors Survey, a universal screener of mental health, substance use, and school and contextual factors administered in public middle and high schools in Massachusetts (N₂₀₂₀ = 3,522, N₂₀₂₁ = 6,484, N₂₀₂₂ = 23,915). Using a seven-question linking code approach, a subset of students were longitudinally linked across administrations (N2020–2022 = 563, 58% female sex, 30.4% minoritized racial/ethnic identity, Mage = 13.2 years; N2021–2022 = 1,545, 51% female sex, 28.9% minoritized racial identity, Mage = 14.3 years). Linking using minimally invasive questions such as the ones presented here may reduce risk, increase privacy, and offer a low-burden opportunity to link observations across time. This work aims to characterize longitudinal trajectories of mental health including substance use in large, community-based samples, as well as the individual-, school-, and community-level risk and protective factors that may modulate the expression of mental health symptoms over time.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates how the historical and geopolitical relationship between China and Japan has shaped collective psychology. Using language-based methods across three domains—public sentiment, political discourse, and academic literature—we conducted three complementary analyses. First, word embedding techniques applied to two large-scale Chinese text corpora show that sentiment toward Japan improved from the 1950s to 1980s before declining, a pattern that parallels Japanese sentiment toward China. Second, topic modelling of Japanese parliamentary records reveals that discussions of China over the past eight decades have been embedded in shifting global and regional geopolitical concerns, with recurring attention to war memory and maritime disputes. Third, a review of English-language psychology literature indicates that early studies (1940s–1980s) focused on war and stereotypes; after the 1990s, research emphasized historical memory and reconciliation, and more recently, topics such as Chinese students in Japan, cross-border mobility, and business relations—mirroring growing socioeconomic interdependence. Together, these analyses provide a multilayered view of how sentiment, identity, and historical memory co-evolve with the geopolitical landscape in Sino-Japanese relations.

ABSTRACT

Cognitive science needs phenomenology, not despite, but because of the epistemic challenges posed by consciousness. This article argues that the pervasive presence of intuitive dualism, the empirical cognitive tendency to distinguish the mental from physical, is a widespread and entrenched feature of human experience. Drawing on work in developmental psychology and cognitive anthropology, we suggest that first-person experience, often bracketed or marginalised in scientific accounts, must instead be treated as a legitimate source of epistemic access. The goal is in no way to return to metaphysical dualism but to recognise that the intuitively dualist subjective experience forms the data any science of consciousness must take seriously. Reframing the study of consciousness through phenomenological epistemology not only acknowledges the ontological stakes of mental phenomena but also realigns scientific inquiry with the lived realities it seeks to explain. This interdisciplinary rethinking offers a path forward for reconciling cognitive science, philosophy and the enduring puzzle of consciousness.

Health Psychology, Vol 44(11), Nov 2025, 1015-1027; doi:10.1037/hea0001511

Objective: Regular physical activity (PA) is associated with many health benefits; however, up to 94% of postpartum individuals do not meet PA guidelines. Understanding mediators of postpartum PA behavior change interventions is essential to increase PA participation following childbirth. The purpose of this review was to identify putative mediators of postpartum PA interventions. Method: Six databases were searched for primary or gray literature from inception until December 2023. Intervention studies of any language were included if they contained (a) individuals ≤ 12 months postpartum, (b) a PA intervention, (c) a no exercise or different exercise comparator, and (d) a change in PA and putative mediator outcome that could be classified with the theoretical domains framework (TDF). Results were categorized by mediation path, mediator TDF domain, and PA outcome. Results: Twenty-eight articles (3,328 participants) were eligible, and summary effects for Paths AB, A, B, and C were calculated from two, 19, two, and 18 unique studies, respectively. For the mediation Path AB, we found very small effects from the domains of beliefs about capabilities (r = .08), beliefs about consequences (r = .02), environmental context and resources (r = .01), and social influences (r = .08). We found a small total effect (Path C, r = .12) of postpartum PA interventions on PA. Conclusion: Future postpartum PA interventions should integrate components that increase outcomes under the domains of beliefs about capabilities, beliefs about consequences, environmental context and resources, and social influences. Further research that tests nonconscious mediators (e.g., PA habit, identity) is needed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Consulting Psychology Journal, Vol 77(3), Sep 2025, 238-252; doi:10.1037/cpb0000296

This article details the state of the art in measuring emotional intelligence (EI) in workplace settings, with a focus on the needs of practitioners who want to put scientific findings to use. It starts by defining EI as an umbrella construct that consists of a series of related yet distinct facets. Rather than focusing on theoretical models of EI, the article is organized around three measurement models—namely, self-report, ability testing, and observer report—and elaborates trade-offs based on each method’s strengths and weaknesses. Self-reported EI is highly correlated with personality traits such as agreeableness, and it is best conceptualized as confidence and motivation rather than intelligence. Self-reported EI is no more appropriate for hiring and promotion than are self-reported technical skills, but it can be valuable for developmental use, particularly when juxtaposed with other EI measures to highlight gaps in self-awareness that represent blind spots or hidden opportunities. Self-reports are also important for career counseling because self-perceptions and actual abilities can drive decision-making separately. Ability-tested EI shows greater validity for distinguishing EI from personality and other constructs, although ability reports can be more resource-intensive to administer and there are challenges in defining “right answers.” Finally, observer reports are valid and reflect people’s competencies in daily use more than their hypothetical best performance. The article emphasizes the importance of matching the method of measuring EI to the goal for doing so and suggests the value of all three types of measures in combination.

ABSTRACT

Introduction

There have been mixed findings on how alcohol consumption changed during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia. We triangulated six data sources to assess what happened to Australian alcohol consumption during the pandemic and examined how seasonal patterns in consumption related to potential lockdown effects.

Methods

Data were obtained from surveys, sales-based estimates and wastewater data, and analysed descriptively. The mean and proportion change in alcohol measures between 2020 and 2023 compared to 2019 were calculated. The monthly 2020–2023 off-premise sales were compared to pre-pandemic estimates.

Results

Consumption in 2020 remained relatively consistent with pre-pandemic levels (proportion change ranged from −5.3% to 5.6%). Compared to pre-pandemic levels (10.28 L in 2018/19), sales-based estimates decreased in 2019/20 (10.04 L) and increased in 2020/21 (10.85 L), before decreasing in 2021/22 and 2022/23 (10.74 and 10.46 L, respectively). Apart from the initial impact of the public health orders on off-premise purchasing, the restrictions did not appear to influence off-premise sales. Shifts in consumption in 2020 were substantially influenced by regular seasonal patterns of drinking.

Discussion and Conclusions

We found mixed results in how consumption changed during the pandemic, suggesting that survey and administrative data should be used in conjunction when examining consumption. Using survey data, there were no significant changes in consumption during the pandemic compared with 2019. However, seasonality effects were evident during 2020, which should be considered when assessing consumption during the pandemic. Meanwhile, off-premise sales and sales-based estimates were higher in 2020–2023 than pre-pandemic estimates—suggesting a shift in Australian off-premise purchasing patterns.

Abstract

Accessing the US safety net depends on labour market participation and demonstrating behaviour policymakers deem responsible. These prescriptions create moral distinctions between deserving and undeserving recipients, generating stigma and shame. Despite increasing experimentation with unconditional cash, little data exists interrogating perceptions of deservedness among recipients and potential recipients. Using a Big Qual analysis of survey data (N = 1517) and interviews (N = 197) from eight guaranteed income experiments, this study explores how participants reflect traditional deservedness narratives. Respondents exhibited lessened internalized stigma, renegotiated or disengaged from dominant blame narratives, and presumed that widespread structural inequality rather than irresponsibility created financial stress.
