ABSTRACT

In this article Roger and Imelda talk with each other around the Meta crisis in our world. This is based on a video presentation of a conversation for the 20th Celebration of the Greek Systemic Journal. Metalogos. They explore ways systemic practitioners and thinkers might address some of the pressing issues of the today using the myth of ‘Ariadne’s Thread’ which led the Greek warrior Thessus out of the maze of uncertainty and certain death by the all consumering Minotaur. They ask how we might creatively adapt ourselves to situations of impending non-linear collapse, over which we have little control. In this conversation they draw on ideas from the Bateson’s and other social and environmental thinkers, as well as deep systems thinking and Indigenous wisdom. They explore how we might draw on work with the imaginal and liminal spaces, including the metaphor of the Fifth Province in Irish Mythology, to illustrate how we might co-create practices for different and emerging world.

The Dobbs decision has precipitated renewed medical, political, and professional interest in the issue of abortion. Because this decision handed responsibility for regulation of abortion back to the states, and because the states are enacting or have enacted policies that tend to be very permissive or very restrictive, the result has been legal and professional confusion for physicians and their patients. Medical education cannot resolve either the legal or ethical issues regarding abortion. However, medical education must prepare future physicians for caring for patients seeking abortion-related services. Physicians must be prepared to interact appropriately (sensitively and with integrity) with patients or colleagues whose views on abortion differ significantly from their own. This essay describes our educational effort to achieve that objective. The motto that governed this exercise was “No Easy Answers.”

ABSTRACT

Background

The transition to adult life is complex for young men with intellectual disabilities, who face limited opportunities in education and the workplace. Though schools should support this process, little is understood about how these individuals prepare for the transition.

Methodology

Fifteen participants, including seven young men with intellectual disabilities, seven legal guardians, and a Ministry of Education inspector, were interviewed to provide insights on preparing for post-school life transition.

Findings

Findings highlighted that while young men with intellectual disabilities had generally positive high school experiences, preparation for transition was minimal despite existing educational policies.

Conclusion

The present findings highlight an implementation gap in Riyadh, where educational policies regarding IEPs are not implemented as intended, and vocational training policies fail to reach their full potential due to partial implementation. Communication between schools and families remained limited, even though students reported positive experiences at school.

We examine evidence for the validity of different measures under the label emotional intelligence (EI). Some measures are valid for the assessment of EI and others are valid for the assessment of socioemotional attributes (SEA). The constructs of EI and SEA are defined and measures of each described, along with the mental response processes the measures elicit: test-takers’ abilities, self-estimated attributes, or observer reports. Both EI and SEA measures are valid but for distinctly different purposes, and the two classes of measures make different predictions. We add our voices to those who have advocated for dropping the EI label from SEA measures to more clearly draw the distinction between the two. Being clearer about constructs and measures will enhance consulting in the workplace and other applied settings. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

Previous research has found that children typically prefer items from assortments of large rather than small varieties. Scarce items with fewer similar items are more desired than abundant items, although the reverse pattern can also be seen in certain situations. However, little research has examined these two factors simultaneously. Designed to fill this gap, the current study examined how variety and quantity impacted economic decisions of resource value among children and adults. In Experiment 1, 129 participants were asked to choose between two assortments (i.e., stores) to buy one item; two assortments had different varieties of merchandise with different quantities per variety. Results showed a consistent preference for high over low variety and high over low quantity. The effect of variety is stronger than quantity, the latter of which, however, could attenuate the effect of the former. Overall, children and adults performed similarly except when variety was held constant. In Experiment 2, 128 participants were asked to buy two items from one of the two assortments. Results from Experiment 1 were largely replicated in Experiment 2. Our results demonstrated the important interplay between variety and quantity on resource value and choice selection for children and adults. Implications were also discussed.

Health Psychology, Vol 44(11), Nov 2025, 1003-1014; doi:10.1037/hea0001525

Background: Blood is an essential medicine, and to deliver effective health care, blood services need to attract donors who represent the diverse demographics of health care users. At present, there is a substantial shortfall of Black donors. We report how a novel community-based co-designed arts-based approach to encourage Black donors generalizes to the wider U.K. population. Method: The co-design process involved four stages: (a) needs identification (n = 42 Black people) to identify where, when and with whom Black people discussed blood donation; (b) workshops to co-design arts-based interventions (n = 12: Black people—professional actors/artists and lay people); (c) test and refinement of the narratives (n = 1); and (d) evaluation using an online experiment to provide a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the co-designed narratives relative to a slogan-based campaign in terms of affect (mediator) and two outcomes (willingness to donate and encourage others to donate; n = 826: 345 Black people, 481 White people). Results: Four script narratives were produced: (a) comedy—challenging misconceptions; (b) reciprocity—donating for mutual benefit; (c) donor–recipient—linking donors and recipients; and (d) sliding doors—reversing a timeline to provide a positive outcome. All four narratives were evaluated positively. For White people, the slogan-based campaign enhanced both outcomes via positive affect. For Black people, the donor–recipient narrative enhanced both outcomes via positive affect. Conclusion: All communities positively rated the co-designed arts-based approaches and showed specific benefits for encouraging Black donors. Blood services should consider using co-designed arts-based approaches. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

This paper examines intrahousehold access to land in rural Tamil Nadu, India, arguing that household members do not have equal access to their household’s land. Drawing on the ‘bundle of rights’ metaphor, this paper unpacks the various rights that household members can derive from household land. Ethnographic data reveal that women have the most limited bundle of rights compared to men in their household. Social norms and practices prefer sons to inherit land, restricting women’s access to land. This paper argues that simply registering land in women’s names does not necessarily give women greater control over household land, as management rights are shaped more by gender norms than legal ownership. This suggests that solely increasing women’s landownership is insufficient to challenge the underlying social practices that perpetuate gender inequalities in land access. The paper highlights the importance of understanding intrahousehold dynamics to address the complex barriers women face in accessing land.

The ABC reports voluntary patients at Kempsey District Hospital will either be transferred to a new “hospital in the home” program or a neighbouring hospital, while involuntary patients will be transferred to Port Macquarie Base Hospital, 55 kilometres away. The NSW government says if the hospital in the home program is successful, it could be rolled out across the state.

<imgsrc border="0" align="left" alt="image">Male breast cancer (MBC) contributes to approximately 1% of total breast cancer diagnoses, with rapidly rising incidence and mortality rates worldwide. Since most breast cancer research has focused on women, this study intended to report the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of MBC to aid in its control and prevention. The data on the incidence, DALYs, deaths, and age-standardized rates of MBC between 1990 and 2021 in different countries and territories were sourced from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study. In 1990 and 2021, Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest incidence, DALYs, and mortality rates. Countries in the middle socio-demographic index quintile showed the fastest growth in age-standardized incidence rate, ASDR, and ASMR. From 1990 to 2021, the incidence, mortality rate, and DALYs of MBC increased worldwide. Alcohol use, dietary risks, and tobacco use were risk factors for ASMR, with dietary risks ranking first in all GBD regions. The rise in the number of cases of breast cancer in men places substantial stress on humans. Hence, policymakers should establish effective interventions and strategies for patients with MBC in accordance with the local situation.</imgsrc>
