Evaluative conditioning (EC) procedures involve repeatedly pairing target objects with positive or negative stimuli to alter individuals’ responses to those objects. A large body of research has tested whether EC procedures are efficient at modifying existing evaluations and, as a result, can reduce undesired behaviors or enhance desirable behaviors across diverse domains. The present systematic review and meta-analysis examined the efficacy of EC procedures as interventions to induce attitudinal and behavioral change. The systematic review (115 studies from 78 reports) addressed questions related to the topics of the interventions, the theoretical rationale for using EC-based procedures, variations in procedures and measures, and evidence of the interventions’ long-term effects and their impact beyond the laboratory. The meta-analysis (including 505 effect sizes from 23,845 participants) found an overall small and significant effect of EC-based interventions (Hedges’s g = 0.21). Analyses revealed some evidence favoring publication bias, including when controlling for significant moderators, but heterogeneity among the studies prevents a definitive conclusion. Results further revealed a more substantial effect on attitudinal and behavioral measures than behavioral intention measures, a larger effect on implicit evaluation than explicit evaluation measurements, and larger effects on immediate than delayed measurements. Overall, the results suggest that EC procedures are minimally efficient as a strategy for inducing attitudinal and behavioral changes. Future research could benefit from conducting field studies and examining how other factors, such as individual characteristics, might enhance the efficacy of EC-based interventions. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract

Motivation

The measurement of the fragility of countries continues to be a growing field, although there is less and less consensus on the definition of fragility. Moreover, quantifying highly complex concepts such as state fragility involves assumptions that differ substantially across indices. Yet, interest in advancing the ways of capturing fragility remains high. Therefore, it raises the question of why the fragility community remains invested in the concept despite the notable challenges and how we can make sense of the different fragility measures available today.

Purpose

This article considers why there are so many fragility indices and how they can be most useful to scholars and the international community. We contribute to a growing debate on this issue by explaining why multilateral organizations and donors are still invested in expanding the concept and by carrying out a stocktake of the current indices as well as offering suggestions about how to make sense of them.

Approach and methods

We identify the most widely used measures of state fragility and evaluate them according to the basic criteria for developing such indices as set out in the literature. We unpack the underlying source indicators to understand what the fragility indices ultimately tell us. We then briefly compare some of the current classifications as an example of how different definitions can result in inconsistent rankings.

Findings

A review of the available indices reveals that they can be sources of useful signals. However, there is also extraneous noise due to sourcing problems, problems of double-counting, or data time-lags.

Policy implications

Beyond reliance on composite indices, policy-makers can leverage publicly available indicators to define their own vision of an optimal state and identify targeted areas for improvement, fostering more context-specific and actionable strategies. Such an approach enables better use of underlying data for strategic planning and sustainable development, while ensuring that policies are reflective of the actual needs of fragile states.

Abstract

Self-control development in children and adolescents is shaped by both genetic and environmental influences, yet little is known about how these factors interact across developmental stages. This two-wave longitudinal study investigated the interplay between the DRD2 gene rs1799732 polymorphism and negative parenting in predicting self-control among 9–14-year-olds, with a focus on differences between childhood and adolescence. Results revealed that the effects of negative parenting on self-control were concentrated in childhood (ages 9–11) and varied by genotype. Children with the GG allele were more vulnerable to negative parenting, exhibiting reduced self-control, whereas those carrying the T allele (TT/TG) demonstrated enhanced self-control under similar conditions, suggesting a possible ‘training’ effect. These findings highlight childhood as a critical period of environmental sensitivity and underscore the need for personalized parenting strategies that account for genetic differences. Limitations include the study’s restricted developmental window, the exclusion of positive parenting and other family subsystems, and the need for replication using multi-wave designs and broader samples. The results provide novel insights into gene–environment interactions and offer practical guidance for targeted interventions to foster self-control in youth.
