Beyond Blue, the Australian organisation devoted to addressing depression and other problems of ‘mental health’, has been around for 25 years now, and holds a commanding place in conversations around these topics. In an era when the general conception of life’s subjective and existential troubles has come to be framed almost exclusively as that of ‘mental health’, Beyond Blue is now an almost ubiquitous presence in Australian life—not least because it has positioned itself as one of the ‘go to’ organisations for those wanting to deal with mental health issues outside of a traditional clinical framework.

When we meet new people, we instinctively form a first impression of their characteristics, which can significantly impact interpersonal dynamics. The present study extends previous research examining face-to-face interactions by exploring impression formation in technology-mediated communication, where nonverbal cues are less abundant. Specifically, we examined the extent to which emotional interpretation of text messages influences attributions of dominance and warmth. Participants (N = 399) were shown text messages that conveyed a positive, negative, or neutral emotional signal. Some messages were accompanied by an emoji (happy, angry, or neutral), and others did not contain an emoji. Participants rated their perception of the message sender’s emotional state, as well as how warm or dominant they thought the sender was. Results suggest that emotional cues, even in the absence of face-to-face visual or auditory feedback, played a role in impression formation. These findings shed light on the mechanisms of social cognition in technology-mediated communication and suggest strategies for achieving interpersonal goals in environments where traditional nonverbal cues are limited.

Asian American Journal of Psychology, Vol 16(3), Sep 2025, 213-230; doi:10.1037/aap0000373

Research has shown a racial divide in mental health service utilization in North America, with individuals from Asian backgrounds being the least likely to seek professional support despite their significant needs. Adolescents of Asian heritage are particularly at risk given the complexity of their help-seeking process (e.g., parental approval, culturally related stigma). The present systematic review aimed to identify the barriers that Asian American and Asian Canadian adolescents face in seeking professional mental health support. Database (ERIC, Medline, APA PsycInfo) and citation searches (as of May 10, 2024) resulted in 15 empirical articles meeting the inclusion criteria: The help receivers were 12- to 19-year-old Asian adolescents residing in the United States or Canada, and barriers related to mental health help-seeking were reported. Two coders assessed the quality of the included studies and synthesized themes related to barriers at the individual, family, and systemic levels. Findings indicate that mental health stigma, inadequate mental health literacy, a lack of emotionally validating home environment, the Model Minority Myth, and practical obstacles (e.g., financial difficulty) are prominent barriers to treatment seeking. One limitation was that all included studies focused on first- or second-generation immigrants of East or Southeast Asian backgrounds in the United States, which could affect the generalizability of the results to families with more recent immigration histories or those residing in different countries. Collectively, these results highlight the potential importance of considering multifaceted barriers when providing mental health support to adolescents of Asian heritage and underscore the need for further research in this area.
